Deanery Pastoral Planning Meeting
On January 11, 2015 we had a meeting at the
Pictou County Wellness Center led by Fr. Donald
MacGillivray, Director of Pastoral Planning for the
Diocese of Antigonish. At this meeting that was
open to all parishioners of the Deanery, we
discussed how best to respond to some of the
challenges that we are facing as a Deanery such as
declining population and an aging clergy. The
Pictou Deanery Pastoral Planning Committee are
interested in what you think should be done. We
are inviting submissions on this issue until March
15, 2015 and they can be sent to:
Rev. Donald MacGillivray PO 1628, Antigonish
NS B2G 2L8 or [email protected] or
[email protected] or Fax 902-863-6237
Fr. Donald MacGillivray has shared his power
point presentation for the Pastoral Planning
Meeting On January 11. It is available on the All
Saints Pastoral Unit Website at www.aspu.ca.
Ritual Expression of the Sign of Peace
The exchange of peace appropriately carried out
among the participants at Mass enriches the
meaning of the rite itself and gives fuller
expression to it. (Circular Letter: The Ritual
Expression of the Gift of Peace at Mass no.2).
While many practices have entered our liturgy
over the years, “best practices” as recommended in
the above-mentioned Circular Letter are as
follows;
 No music accompanies the sign of Peace –
we sing the “Lamb of God” at the
fracturing rite only.
 Movement of the faithful: we offer the sign
of Peace only to those who are nearest to
us.
 Priest may give Sign of Peace to the
ministers and is to remain in the sanctuary.
However, he may, for reasonable cause
offer the Sign of peace to a small number
of the faithful (General Instruction of the
Roman Missal no. 154).
 Common gestures are a handshake or slight
bow. Other gestures such as waving or the
“peace sign” are not appropriate, nor are
words of congratulation or best wishes. We
greet one another with “Peace be with you”
or “The Peace of Christ.”
Parking on St. John’s Street in New Glasgow
We have received some concerns regarding
parking on this street during Mass at St. John’s. It
is permissible to park on one side only (on the
right side, facing down to Trenton Rd.) If there
were an emergency, neither an ambulance nor a
fire truck (or snowplough) would be able to get
through quickly and safely. We would appreciate
if you would obey the sign and not park on the
opposite side of the street.
No Scent Makes Sense
Please remember that the churches in our Pastoral
Unit are scent-free. There are parishioners who
have sensitivities to the chemicals in perfume,
aftershave, hairspray, etc. These create problems
for those with asthma, lung disease and migraines.
The use of scent-free products would be
appreciated. Thank-you for your co-operation.
Did you know that the Sisters of St. Martha began
when a group of women responded to a call from
Bishop John Cameron of Antigonish in 1894 to be
a part of an auxiliary congregation of the Sisters of
Charity of Halifax, and prepared for the ministry
of household management at St. Francis Xavier
College?
