January 2015 IKO Finalizes Plans for Hillsboro Manufacturing Facility IKO Industries recently announced that its latest North American plant to manufacture residential and commercial asphalt shingles and related roofing products will be located in Hillsboro. The family-owned, Canadian-based company has grown to over 25 plants in North America and Europe since being founded in 1951. Officials have been in negotiations on the project with local government and economic development leaders since 2011. Initially dubbed Project Westward Bound by Governor Rick Perry’s economic development office, the IKO Southwest project will be located on a 60-acre tract of land just north of Lee Roy Jordon Lumber in the Hillsboro Industrial Park. The $80 million facility will be state-of-the-art, providing approximately 50 jobs when it opens in early 2017, according to Derek Fee, manager of corporate communications for IKO. “I want to take this opportunity to welcome IKO Southwest to the City,” Mayor Edith Turner Omberg said. “This announcement culminates three years of negotiations since company officials first visited our community. I commend officials with Hill County, Hill College, Hillsboro Independent School District, members of the City Council and Hillsboro Economic Development Corporation (HEDC) Board of Directors for their diligent work throughout the process which led to this announcement.” Jack Gannon, president of the HEDC board, added, “The Hillsboro EDC and IKO have worked together for several years and spent many, many hours ironing out details which enables our city and county to benefit from the greatest financial investment in local industrial development history. Being a family-owned enterprise, IKO will be an ardent community supporter and partner. We look forward to the development and opening of the IKO facility and believe it may be a catalyst to attract additional commercial development in our community.” While several businesses, such as Brandom Cabinets, L.B. Foster, Gate Precast, ThermaFoam, Titanium Industries, Ameritube and Clayton Supply have located in the city over the years, they occupied existing buildings. This will be the first new construction since Lee Roy Jordon started developing his complex in 1999. Incentive packages were approved by the Hillsboro City Council, Hill County Commissioners’ Court, Hillsboro Independent School District Board of Trustees, and Hill College Board of Regents. Mayor Omberg was recently notified by Texas Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples that the City’s Texas Capital Fund grant has been approved by the Texas Department of Agriculture. It will be used to construct a new city street leading to the plant off of Old Dallas Highway. The company also received a Texas Enterprise Fund grant. IKO is a world-wide leader in the roofing, waterproofing and insulation industry for residential and commercial markets. This will be the second manufacturing facility in the South for IKO, with the Hillsboro facility expected to target Texas and Oklahoma markets. Most recently the company began operating a manufacturing facility in Sylacauga, Alabama to serve the Southeastern United States. 2015 January 28th through 31st Highlights from the 2014 Hillsboro Public Safety Awards Dinner Officer Gino Trevino received the Officer of the Year Award, as well as the Chief’s Award, while Erica Roberts received the Civilian of the Year Award.
