Autumn Groth and Joe DeSantis
didn’t anticipate winning the 12th
annual Bowl Mor Christmas Mixed
Doubles Tournament on Dec. 13. But
after the award ceremony, DeSantis
had an even bigger holiday surprise
for his girlfriend – a wedding proposal.
After the handicap tournament,
DeSantis got down on one knee
and asked Groth to marry him. A
shocked Groth accepted. The couple,
who have been together for 10 years,
joked about tying the knot if, by
chance, they won event, Groth said.
“We said if we won, we’d get married,” Groth said. “But I didn’t take
him seriously.”
Groth and DeSantis won $600 for
finishing first which will help with
their wedding plans. Groth said the
couple hopes to marry in January.
Groth and DeSantis defeated Jennifer Creno and Peter Moro Jr., 487415, to win the tournament. Creno
and Moro cashed $300 for second.
Creno and Moro defeated their
mother Rosa Moro and partner Ryan
Bertrand in the semifinals. Moro and
Bertrand finished tied for third. Nicole O’Brien and Bob Lazzaro also
finished third.
Creno and Moro were the tournament’s top qualifiers with a 1,544
handicap total. Creno rolled a career-high 803 scratch series while
Moro had a 705 scratch series. Creno
had games of 258, 269 and 276. It
was the first 800 series by a female
this season.
Vince DiFlorio had the top qualifying series with an 837. The event
drew a full field of 48 teams.

Champions crowned at
Junior Masters
by Teresa Lightaul
Some of the best youth bowlers from the Syracuse
and Fulton areas competed in the eighth annual Jack
Noonan Memorial Junior Masters on Dec. 21 at Lakeview Bowling Center.
A total of 20 boys and girls took part in the event and
competed in one of three divisions: Scratch, Handicap
2 (141-199 average) and Handicap 1 (140 and below average). We were pleasantly surprised by the quality and
professionalism of the bowling that we saw.
This year’s champions were: David Neri (Handicap
1), Ryan MacCombie (Handicap 2) and Jacob Fox
(Scratch).
Players started the day by bowling four games
across eight lanes to qualify for advancement. The
field was then cut to the top two in the Handicap 1
division, the top eight in the Handicap 2 division
and the top four in the Scratch division. One-game

was one winner.
I would like to personally congratulate all the competitors on their great bowling
and sportsmanship. They displayed an awesome amount of skill and camaraderie. All
awards presented were in the form of scholarship and will be placed into their individual
SMART accounts. Congratulations again to all bowlers. You all did a wonderful job and
we as parents and coaches are proud of each and every one of you.

Cayuga CC heads into 2015 season with a new coach
With the departure of former head coach
Steve Spinney, Christine Episcopo has taken
over the coaching duties at the Cayuga Community College bowling program. Episcopo
served as an assistant last season. Helping
out Episcopo this winter is former Cayuga
CC All-American Ryan Bertrand.
Episcopo and Bertrand are working hard
to prepare Cayuga CC for its 2015 tournament schedule which begins Jan. 18 with the
Hawk Invitational. Bertrand’s responsibilities center around player development while
Episcopo will focus on coaching and administrative duties.
“We both wanted to take over the team because we saw what great potential these kids
have and we wanted them to have a great experience bowling in college,” Episcopo said.
“I handle everything in terms of paperwork
and keeping the program structured. I am always there for the student athletes whether
they have questions or concerns within the
college. With Ryan’s knowledge of bowling
and my knowledge of the college we complement each other very well.”
The team practices twice a week at Fal
Falcon Lanes in Auburn. On Tuesdays the team
practices on a house shot and on Thursdays
they practice on a Sport shot in preparation
for tournaments.
The Spartan men’s bowling team finished
with a 46-10 record last season and finished
second in the NJCAA Region 3 Team Championships.
Although the men’s team graduated
All-Region standout Alex DiGenaro (Liverpool), the Spartans return Bernie Cecchini
out of Union Springs and Justin Ingram from
West Genesee. Episcopo said Cayuga has
a deep roster with the addition of Oswego
freshmen Matt Clemons, Zach DelBrocco
and Joe Clavelli along with Eric Hodson
(Auburn).
On the women’s side, Beth Piston (East
Syracuse Minoa) is the lone returning player
on a short-handed squad this winter.
Cayuga’s junior college schedule revolves
around tournaments. The Spartans have six
tournaments before the NJCAA Regionals
on Feb. 15.
“College bowling is all about tournaments,” Episcopo said. “Unfortunately our
league doesn’t offer league matches like

Liz Johnson to Join USBC
Hall of Fame in 2015
Liz Johnson, of Cheektowaga, and Larry
Laub, of Lincoln, California, have been
elected to the USBC Hall of Fame in the Superior Performance category. The announcement was made Dec. 23.
The two were among seven bowlers on the
national ballot (six on the men's ballot and one
on the women's) and were elected to the 2015
USBC Hall of Fame class by a USBC panel
of veteran bowling writers, hall of famers and
board members.
Johnson and Laub will join the three inductees elected into the Outstanding USBC
Performance category in November by the
USBC Hall of Fame Committee.
The trio includes four-time USBC Open

the late Fritzie Rahn of Chicago, an eighttime winner at the USBC Women's Championships, who was elected posthumously.
The induction ceremony will take place
April 29 at the 2015 USBC Convention in
Omaha, Nebraska.
Johnson, 40, wasted no time making a name
for herself on the professional scene, earning

professional titles, including five majors - the
U.S. Women's Open in 1996, 2007 and 2013,
Hammer Players Championships in 2001 and
the USBC Queens in 2009.
Her resume also includes three wins at the
USBC Women's Championships and more
than two dozen medals in international competition.
Laub was a standout on the PBA Tour in the
1970s, collecting 12 titles, including one major,
the 1974 U.S. Open. He also owns 12 PBA regional titles, five PBA50 Tour victories and was
named PBA50 Rookie of the Year in 1994.
The 71-year-old right-hander was inducted
into the PBA Hall of Fame in 1985 and earned
the No. 37 spot among the 50 Greatest Players

The CNY Striker wants your league scores and it’s easy to report them.
Here’s what to do: Compile the top 10 scores, with first and last names followed by their series, in paragraph form in a Word Document or in the body of an email. Please include the name of the league
and the date the league competed at the beginning. Then send them to: [email protected]. It’s as simple as that to help your league bowlers get recognized!

Donate your old bowling ball
to a youth bowler
Do you have an old bowling ball you no longer use or
want? The Syracuse Youth Bowling Association is looking for bowlers to donate any old balls to give youngsters
an opportunity to use a better or newer ball that he/she
would otherwise not be able to afford.
If you have an old ball, 15 pounds or lighter, consider
donating it. For more details, contact the Youth office at
488-1672.
Thank you!
