Appointment of non-bonded doctors doctors as medical and health officers,” Chief Minister Mukul Sangma told reporters after a cabinet meeting held here. These doctors passed out from medical colleges within the country as well as outside and conform to the requirement of the Medical Council of India (MCI), the chief minister said. “The state at present is in great need of medical professionals particularly doctors both MBBS and specialists,” he said. “It has been the policy of the government to get as many seats as possible to have bonded doctors or students to pursue medical courses in quota alloted to the state,” Sangma said while lamenting “lack of effort” in filling the void of doctors. Expressing his happiness that a lot of parents nowadays can afford to send their wards for medical studies while not choosing the quota, he said, “We are also fortunate to have these students who would like to serve the state and cabinet has approved the proposal.” The students pursuing their MBBS studies under the quota are required to sign a bond to come back and serve the state. However, many of the bonded doctors defaulted on the agreement and chose jobs outside in lieu of a penalty while some of them are yet to pay up. “The government is still running after some bonded doctors who have failed to refund the money spent by the government on their studies,” Sangma said. 4 hurt as Sumo collides with truck from Nongpoh.
