Course Objectives:
Participants completing this course will be
able to:
Ÿ Discuss the importance of respiratory
mechanics and ventilator waveforms to
optimize ventilator settings and to detect
asynchrony.
Ÿ Identify methods to reduce ventilator
induced lung injury using evidence-based
lung protective ventilator strategies.
Ÿ Discuss the application of Non-Invasive
Ventilation for COPD exacerbation, CHF,
and asthma; and its use in early
extubation.
Ÿ Describe the application of mechanical
ventilation for patients with obstructive
disorders, dynamic hyperinflation, severe
asthma and COPD.
Ÿ Discuss weaning protocols and
predicting readiness for extubation.

William (Bill) Miller, RCP, RRT, has been a classroom, laboratory and clinical instructor in the Napa Valley
College Respiratory Care Program for 18 years. Previously a staff therapist at UC Davis Medical Center for 25
years, Bill is considered by his colleagues to be an expert authority in the latest scientific knowledge and clinical
practices related to mechanical ventilation. He is a recipient of the prestigious McPherson Teaching Award for
Excellence. Bill is a popular speaker who lectures for numerous healthcare organizations, hospitals and
continuing education providers. His down-to-earth personality and sense of humor make his lectures interactive
