To help you save money, stay warm, and be safe, we offer this advice. First, never build an open fire inside your home. Any unventilated combustion, whether from fire or burning charcoal or gas, releases deadly carbon monoxide. You can’t see it or smell it. But it can kill in minutes. If you have a fire in your fireplace, make sure the embers are completely cold before closing the flue. And never use an unventilated appliance, such as a kerosene heater, or gas stove, oven or dryer to heat your home. Information in multiple languages on safeheating practices, as well as programs to help low-income customers with their electric bills, is available by calling 1-888-742-SMUD (7683). SMUD offers low-income customers programs to help save energy and money on their electric bills. Eligible customers can take advantage of SMUD’s Energy Assistance Program Rate (EAPR), a discount rate on a portion of their bill. To qualify, household incomes may not exceed 200 percent of the federal poverty level. For example, a family of four can earn up to $47,700 a year and still qualify. EAPR customers may also be eligible for SMUD’s Residential Weatherization program. At no cost to them, they may have their homes or apartments weatherized to improve energy efficiency and keep down energy costs.
