Community
• Co-founder, current Vice President and Volunteer Administrator
of the Newmarket Farmers’ Market
• Chairperson of Newmarket Food Pantry
• Director of the Lower Main Street BIA Board
• Honorary Chair of the MS Supercities Walk (York North Chapter)
• Co-founder and Board Director of Nin Os Kom Tin Aboriginal Fairy
Lake Celebrations
• Instrumental in bringing the Jazz Festival from Aurora to Newmarket
• First Councillor to hold regular ward meetings
Proposed Development
• First Councillor to facilitate a “Memorandum Of Understanding”
between residents and a developer, restricting heights and density
(Kerbel Development at Yonge and Millard)
Traffic
• Instituted Ward 5 Residents’ Traffic Safety Committee — residents
working with Police, Town of Newmarket, Region and Province to
address traffic issues in our ward. This resulted in the Give Kids a
Brake sign campaign and a Traffic Mitigation Strategy
Environment
• Called for the adoption of a pesticide ban and anti-idling bylaws
(2004-2006)
• Leader in the development of the first Platinum Leeds Subdivision
in Canada, Rodeo’s EcoHomes (2004)
Infrastructure and Heritage
• Fought for and won the development of the Riverwalk Commons
• Supported the revitalization of the Main Street Heritage District
• Fought alongside the residents of Currey Crescent, Lloyd Avenue
and Robinson Drive to support their right to choose sidewalks
• Spearheaded the restoration of the Old Town Hall
• Pushed for infrastructure improvements (sewers, water and roads)
for the oldest part of Town
Joe is a long time resident of Ward 5, married and father to a
university graduate daughter and a grade school son.
