Each January, roughly one in three Americans resolve to better themselves in some way. A much smaller percentage of people actually make good on those resolutions. While about 75% of people stick to their goals for at least a week, less than half (46%) are still on target six months later. It's hard to keep up the enthusiasm months after you've swept up the confetti, but it's not impossible. This year, pick one of the following worthy resolutions, and stick with it. Here’s to your health! Good luck! History of Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr. (1929-1968) was a Baptist minister and social activist who played a key role in the American civil rights movement from the mid-1950s until his assassination in 1968. Inspired by advocates of nonviolence such as Mahatma Gandhi, King sought equality for African Americans, the economically disadvantaged and victims of injustice through peaceful protest. He was the driving force behind watershed events such as the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the March on Washington, which helped bring about such landmark legislation as the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. King was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 and is remembered each year on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a U.S. federal holiday since 1986. Boise Senior Center www.boiseseniorcenter.org Monthly publication A NEW PROGRAM FOR VETERANS THE VA MEDICAL FOSTER HOME PROGRAM (MFH) is now beginning at the Boise VA Medical Center. WHAT IS THE MEDICAL FOSTER HOME PROGRAM (MFH)? The Medical Foster Home Program is a unique partnership between State Certified Family Homes (CFH) and Boise VA Home Base Primary Care Program (HBPC). It provides an alternative to nursing home placement for Veterans unable to live independently and who prefer a family setting. The MFH coordinator finds caregivers in the community who are certified by the state and are willing to take Veterans into their home and provide 24-hour supervision and care. The VAMC then provides comprehensive primary care in the home through the Home Based Primary Care team, alleviating the need to get to the clinic for most care. The expectation is for the Veteran to live there for the remainder of his or her life. The coordinator tries to match each Veteran’s personality and level of care needed with the right home and provides regular visits to support both the Veteran and caregiver. The MFH program’s target population is Veterans, enrolled in the Boise VAMC for care, who meet a nursing home level of care, and prefer a noninstitutional setting for their long-term care. IS THIS PROGRAM NEW TO THE VA? The pilot program began in 2004 in Tampa, Florida and San Juan Puerto Rico VA Hospitals. The program has been slowly progressing and continues to be a proven success for many Veterans. There are now 114 programs throughout the Veteran’s Health Administration (VHA) and the Boise VAMC is pleased to be able to bring this program here and provide this option to our Veterans. Should auld acquaintance be forgot, And never brought to mind? Should auld acquaintance be forgot, And auld lang syne! "For auld lang syne, my dear, For auld lang syne. We'll take a cup o' kindness yet, For auld lang syne." Auld Lang Syne The song Auld Lang Syne is traditionally sung by most of us on the stroke of midnight each New Years Eve however in Scotland, where Auld Lang Syne originates it is also sung on Burns Night, January 25th, to celebrate the life of the author and famous poet Robert Burns. The words 'Auld Lang Syne' literally translates from old Scottish dialect meaning 'Old Long Ago' and is about love and friendship in times past. The Auld Lang Syne lyrics referring to 'We'll take a Cup of Kindness yet' relate to a drink shared by men and women to symbolize friendship. The 'Auld Lang Syne' lyrics and words were first published in 1787 and the song has now become a tradition as we celebrate a Happy New Year! Today I made angel food cake. The recipe said beat 12 eggs separately. The neighbors were nice enough to loan me some extra bowls. Tuesday—Tom wanted fruit salad for supper. The recipe said serve without dressing. So I didn't dress. What a surprise when Tom brought a friend home for supper. Wednesday—A good day for rice. The recipe said wash thoroughly before steaming the rice. It seemed kind of silly but I took a bath anyway. I can't say it improved the rice any. Thursday—Today Tom asked for green salad and I tried a new recipe. It said prepare ingredients; lay on a bed of lettuce one hour before serving. Tom asked me why I was rolling around in the garden. Friday—I found an easy recipe for cookies. It said put the ingredients in a bowl and beat it. There must have been something wrong with this recipe. When I got back, everything was the same as when I left. Saturday—Tom did the shopping today and brought home a chicken. He asked me to dress it for Sunday. I don't have any clothes that fit it, and for some reason Tom keeps counting to ten. Sunday—Tom's folks came to dinner. I wanted to serve roast, but all I had was hamburger. Suddenly I had a flash of genius. I put the hamburger in the oven and set the controls for roast. It still came out hamburger, much to my disappointment. GOOD NIGHT DEAR DIARY. This has been a ver y exciting week! I am eager for tomorrow to come so I can try out a new recipe on Tom . If I can talk Tom into buying a bigger oven, I would like to surprise him with a chocolate moose.
