`THE CHR NICLE THE OFFICIAL MONTHLY NEWSLETTER OF KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS COUNCIL #3419 JANUARY 2015 Volume 6 Edition 1 GRAND KNIGHT’S REPORT Brother Knights, I hope all Brother Knights and their families had a special and joyous Christmas, with a happy and healthy New Year ahead for 2015. Let’s keep our sleeves rolled up for our last six months of the fraternal year. I just finished reading Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. If the title is not immediately familiar, you likely know the main character Ebenezer Scrooge. Ever since its publication on December 17, 1843, people have been edified by the conversion Scrooge undergoes thanks to the tutoring of the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future. All of us need to undergo conversion, but it is highly unlikely that we will encounter three ghosts to prod us along the right path. Today many of us walk through life focusing on ourselves and not seeing the real poverty around us; poverty of both body and spirit. As Knights, it is our duty to help people in need of food, heat, clothing, medical care and transportation. However, we are also called to fight the demons of loneliness, ignorance, isolation, spiritual emptiness and sin. These demons afflict both the under privileged and the over privileged. Brothers, as we go forward into 2015, let us carefully survey the world around us and do all we can to help those living in poverty and darkness. With the help of Christ and the protection of our Blessed Mother, we CAN make the world a more Christian place. Presentation of Life Teen Sponsorship Check (Grand Knight and Mary Castner Life Teen Coordinator) ` UPCOMING EVENTS New Year’s Day, Monday, January 1st Each year all K of C Councils have three goals. The first is meeting the required number of programs in a variety of categories. This we have no problems with. The second goal is recruit new members. We still need to recruit six new members by June 2015. The final goal is insurance. We still need to add three associate members to our insurance ranks by June 2015. If all categories are met by June 2015, then our Council will be recognized as a Star Council. Let us all strive to assist our Council to achieve this prestigious award. Parish Breakfast in Presentation Hall, Sunday, January 18th, after 9, 11 and 1 PM Masses. Contact: Manny Barrientes (480) 620-0174 or [email protected] Finally, as I personally look over the past six months, and look ahead to the planning already in the works for the next six, there are so many people that I owe a debt of gratitude. For starters, there are my fellow Officers, our various Program Directors and every member that is actively serving to better the Council and our community. There are the same few members who have come out and assisted with so much, not to mention their families and for the efforts of each and every one, I am truly grateful. If you have not come to a meeting lately, please plan to attend one during the next six months. I look forward to continuing to work with each of you, and promise to keep you each in my prayers. March for Life, Washington, DC, Thursday, January 22nd Please continue to pray for those Brother Knights that are ill or in distress. Also remember to pray for our deceased Knights and their families. th Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Monday, January 19 . Christmas Party Set Up KNIGHT OF THE MONTH Knight of the Month for November 2014 is our Worthy Trustee Sonny Quinonez. Not only is he involved with our Council and Parish, so is his wife Irma. They were instrumental in the preparation, implementation and cleanup for the Fifth Anniversary Celebration of the St. Peregrine Shrine. Brother Sonny, then turned around and participated in our November Parish Breakfast. This is where he was involved with preparation and completing a course, where he then assisted in serving parishioners their meals. Brother Sonny, then stayed and was instrumental as part of the cleanup crew. In fact, he was one of a few that stayed until the very end. Congratulations Brother Sonny, your hard work has not gone unnoticed. January begins the second half of the Fraternal Year and we need each one of you to step forward to support and participate in the Council’s planned activities. My thanks to the Program Directors and those Knights that have participated in the Council’s activities to date. I well know that sometimes life events prevent participation, but I also know that we have never seen some of the newer Knights at any functions and would like to see them and get to know them. If for some reason, I have not seen you at the Council Business Meeting or functions, I encourage you to do so and become an active Knight. It only takes a little effort on your part to become involved in the Council Programs and you will find it very rewarding. At the present time, the Council and the Knights of Columbus will not participate in the Fiesta Bowl Volunteer Driver Program due to contractual agreements with Ford Motor Company, who for the second year in a row is supplying the vehicles. Many thanks to the members and families that attended the Christmas Dinner hosted by the KC Building Corporation. Sorry I had to miss it this year due to illness, but from all reports, it appears that it was a big success and thank you for participating. This year we had 98 firm reservations, which is the largest number in several years. Accolades to the ladies and Knights that helped decorate Presentation Hall. Many thanks to Brother Ray Rodriguez and the KC Corporation for hosting the event and to Boston Market for catering the event. The January Theme for “Building the Domestic Church: The Family Alive” is Family Forgiveness. Family communion can only be preserved and perfected through a great spirit of sacrifice. It requires, in fact, a ready and generous openness of each and all to understand, to forbearance, to pardon and to reconciliation. There is no family that does not know how selfishness, discord, tension and conflict violently attack and at the same time mortally wound its own communion; hence there arise the many and varied forms of division in the family. But, at the same time, every family is called by the God of Peace to have the joyous and renewing experience of ‘reconciliation’ that is communion reestablished and unity restored. To forgive is something divine and we offer that person the possibility of starting again. Vivat Jesus. Tom Burch, PGK and Program Chairman C O R N E R Money Matters By Field Agent Matthew Jones Brother Knights, My name is Matthew Jones, and I am extremely excited to be assigned as your field agent. I recently finished a 28 year career in the United States Army and am looking forward to working in the spirit of Father McGivney to help Catholic families. I joined the Knights in 1997 in Lawton, Oklahoma and due to my schedule and multiple deployments I have never been as involved with the Order as I would have liked. This year I received a letter asking for more of us to become agents. After prayerful consideration with my wife, we decided this would be a great way to get involved with the Knights and directly help protect Catholic families. When you review your goals for 2014 and look to establish new ones for 2015, please take the time to look at how well your family is protected in the event of a loss. I would be honored to go over the benefits available to you through the Knights of Columbus or just get together and share our Catholic faith. We can take you through a needs analysis and find a way to maintain your budget. For Brother Knights that are already insurance members, remember, if you have had a life event in the last year, adding a new member to your family or maybe the loss of someone dear to you, think about adding some coverage or updating your beneficiaries. I am here to answer your questions and get the “Star Council” achievement. Feel free to contact me at one of the meetings, on the phone, or in an email. Vivat Jesus!
