Toronto Region Board of Trade urges Province to adopt OHIC
report recommendations
Toronto, ON, January 8, 2015 — Toronto Region Board of Trade is pleased to offer its
support for recommendations outlined in the recent Ontario Health Innovation Council
(OHIC) report that aim to facilitate greater adoption of innovation within the Ontario
health system.
In a letter to Premier Wynne and key government ministers, the Board expressed its belief
that emphasizing innovation adoption in Ontario’s health care industry will benefit
patients, health care practitioners and business. The recommendations will help sustain a
quality health care system, promote local innovation, attract investment and build
Ontario’s economy by creating well-paying, sustainable local jobs.
This support is founded on the advice of the Board’s Human Health Sciences Committee
which is co-chaired by Elaine Campbell, Past President & CEO of AstraZeneca Canada Ltd.
and Dr. Barry McClellan, President & CEO of Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre.
“With the implementation of the OHIC recommendations we will have an even more
powerful story to tell about the Toronto region’s health sciences cluster’s ability to
commercially compete with leading jurisdictions such as Boston, San Francisco and San
Diego,” said Elaine Campbell.
“The recommendations in the report will help foster a stronger connection to the needs of
the patient and treatments that will improve people’s lives in a fiscally sustainable
manner,” said Dr. Barry McClellan.
The Ontario Health Innovation Council is an advisory body established by the Ontario
government in November 2013. The council was created to accelerate the adoption of new
technologies in our health care system and support the growth and competitiveness of
Ontario’s health technology sector.
