RESULTS FROM THE WEEKEND
KNOWLEDGE BOWL
Last Friday the Cardinal Knowledge Bowl squad participated in their second meet of the season. In total, there
were 18 teams participating from West Fargo, Osakis, Detroit Lakes, Park Christian and Alex. Both park
Christian and Osakis fielded state tournament qualifying teams last year so we anticipated a competitive day.
Coming out of the written round we were in 1st, 8th, 9th and 12th place. The team of Carl Branch, Eric
Branch, Lydia Gusaas, Dalton Struck and Matt Bittmann scored 51/60, but had two teams close behind. In the
first oral round they scored a remarkable 26 points and began the process of separating themselves from the
rest of the field. They ended up scoring 141 points which was 50 points ahead of the next group. Finishing
second with 91 points was Gregor Peterson, Katie Gripne, Chad Blank and Sam Ealy. They put together four
solid oral rounds to move up from 8th to finish in a tie with Osakis' number one team.
Question from the match...On which continent would you find the mountains of the moon?
WRESTLING
Monti Duals
The Cardinal wrestling team lost three matches over the weekend at Monticello. 52-9 to highly ranked
Shakopee, 42-25 to Coon Rapids and 37-35 to New London Spicer. The Cardinal team continues to wrestle
shorthanded and several wrestlers are not in the lineup. Our team will continue to struggle with wins until the
team can get over sickness and injury and consistently put a solid line up together. Those that are in the
lineup are wrestling well but we simply don’t have the man power to overcome forfeits at this time.
DANCE TEAM
This past weekend the Nordic ski team participated in the largest high school Nordic ski meet in North
America, held at Giants' Ridge near Biwabik, MN, which is also the state course. We also found actual real
snow! Temperatures were a balmy -2F to start the event and the mercury did make it up to 5F eventually.
On the boys side in the classical race, Eric Branch landed an 88th place finish with a time of 19:15. Carl Branch
placed 95th with a time of 19:33, and Casey Call finished 111th with a time of 20:02. In the JV Boys classical
race, Jackson WIchtendahl placed 51st with a time of 22:46. In the varsity skate race, Dalton Struck raced well
placing 76th, with a time of 18:56, Grant Rudolph placed 133rd with a time of 21:40.
On the girls side, all of them participated in the varsity classic competition. Leading the way for the team was
Becca Mateer, finishing at 88th place with a time of 24:02, Ellie Hurlen was just a few seconds behind at 92nd
place with a time of 24:07, Camille Johnson placed 110th with a time of 24:55, JeAnna Miller was 114th with a
time of 25:18, Britt Hurlen was 117th with a time of 25:31, and Raessa Winkels was 157th with a time of
31:18.
A few of the skiers had their first experience racing at this meet, which may have created a little shock for
them due to the difficult courses, however, the benefits in my opinion outweigh the disadvantages. At a large
meet like this, Coach Ellison and myself feel that placing in the top 100 or in the upper 50% of the race is a
worthy accomplishment. Also, this was our first classic race of the year for most of the skiers, so it was nice to
get that under our belt. We are looking forward to our next race at Maplelag, near Detroit Lakes on Thursday.
GIRLS BASKETBALL – VARSITY
Alexandria 46 Sauk Rapids 28
The Cardinal defense got off the bus RED HOT on Saturday afternoon as we limited the Storms scoring
opportunities as the Cardinal DEFENSE was aggressive, active and intense thru out the game. The Storm are
much improved and battled the Cards closely for the first half, but a determined, energized Cardinal attack,
pounded the glass and triggered the transition game immediately after the half and we didn’t look back. The
Lady Cards executed crisp passing, teamwork, defensive stops and cruised to another CLC and Section victory
on the road. Scoring for the Lady Cards were 3 in double figures with Macy Hatlestad and Kendall Kohler with
13 each, and Brooke Heggie with 10. Cheyenne Hendrickson had 3, and 2 each for Gretchen Revering, Kiyana
Miller and Kayla Feldhake, Emma Zeigler 1. Brooke Heggie, Macy Hatlestad and Kiyana miller each tore down
3 rebounds. Steals were jumped on by Chi Hendrickson, Emma Zeigler and Kiyana Miller each with 3. Macy H
dished out 4 assists while Kendall K shoveled off 3. The win ups the Cards to 7-2 overall and 4-0 in CLC
play. Great job Ladies, as we continue our philosophy of “One game at a time… and improving every day as a
team!” We look forward to hosting the Tech Tigers on Tuesday and hope to see you all there cheering on the
Cardinals!
Top 20 Thinkers and Teams understand that our success and quality of experience can only happen when we
put our relationships with each other at the center of what we are striving for…
Bottom 80 Thinkers and Teams are all about me and “Star Syndrome” drowns out success… and the quality of
the experience making achieving team goals extremely difficult.
GIRLS BASKETBALL – JV
Alexandria 54 Sauk Rapids-Rice 23
The Alexandria Girls JV Basketball team traveled to Sauk Rapids Saturday afternoon to take on the
Storm. Despite not having played a game in over a week the Cardinals started out the game hot and jumped
to a 16-0 lead before the Storm got in the scoring column. The Cardinals shared the ball well and did an
excellent job changing up their defensive pressure in the full court and the half court. At the half Alexandria
would hold a 33-8 lead. The 2nd half was much of the same as the Cardinals did a great job on the defensive
end working as a team to keep the Storm out of the paint and off of the glass. The Cardinals continued to
share the ball on the offensive end and play unselfish basketball. Ellie Ronning, Maggie Slagle, Lauren
Stockmoe, and Kara Thomson notched several assists for the Cardinals. Alexandria did such a great job
sharing the ball that they were able to get 10 different players in the scoring column. In the end, Alexandria
beat Sauk Rapids-Rice with a final score of 54-23. The Cardinal JV Girls Basketball team improved to 9-0 on
the season with the win.
GIRLS BASKETBALL – 9TH GRADE
Alexandria 64 Sauk Rapids Rice 31
The Alexandria freshman girls played a very well rounded game Saturday afternoon by beating the Sauk
Rapids Storm 64-31. That improved the overall record to 8-0 on the season. We played very good half court
trapping defense and executed our offense very well! There next action will be Tuesday as they host st cloud
tech at 5:45pm.
