From Virginia...
If gratitude were an emotion that, when expressed in writing, each word glowed with
love, this front page would be a blazing glory. For laughter-laced silliness, sombersaturated seriousness, and sanctified-sharing of everyday life, thank you. For gracefilled generosity to me, through gifts, cards, hugs and kind words, thank you. For a
marble bench, a symbol of your strength, for a musical arrangement, and a portrait,
symbols of your artistry, thank you. For a wooden pew and a needle point cushion,
symbols of your creativeness, thank you. For the “little purse,” a symbol of your
kindness and big-heartedness, thank you. For the countless ways you have been shining
examples of Christ’s incarnate Love, thank you, thank you, thank you. I give thanks to
God for each of you. You will be in my prayers each day and in my heart forever. As
we step upon separate paths, may the prayer below illuminate your way.
Peace,

Virginia’s Farewell
3
In an occasion to celebrate shared ministry over twelve and a half years with Good Shepherd, Virginia says goodbye to her beloved parish! We will all miss her and wish her well in her future endeavors.
On behalf of her Senior Wardens, past and present, a special thanks to you for your contributions to Virginia’s
purse and for making this past Sunday so special. The love of this congregation for Virginia was so apparent. God
bless all of you!

From the Senior Warden...
Church of the Good Shepherd
As your new Senior Warden, I join with you in welcoming the New Year. It will be a very different year for us.
I’m humbled by your confidence in me as Senior Warden and I know that together, we can make this year of
transition a smooth one, ripe with exciting possibilities.
While saying goodbye to Virginia was most difficult, our celebration was a wonderful send-off filled with years
of happy memories. Our love, gratitude and prayers go with her to the next phase of her life.
And now we look to our future at Good Shepherd. On Sunday, February 8, we will welcome Father Doug Remer,
our Interim Rector. Thinking back, I remember my feelings of what a welcoming community Good Shepherd is
to newcomers. I’m sure we will make Father Remer feel that welcome as we enjoy getting to know each other.
After we settle in for a while and become comfortable together, we will begin the lengthy process of selecting a
new Rector. Canon Jim Pritchett will lead us in this process. We will hire a consultant to work with our Discernment Committee during the various phases of the process. Once the process begins, it will likely be about
a year before it is complete. So we can all relax, taking needed time to consider our future and pray for wisdom
and guidance from the Holy Spirit.
Transition is a time of change. As uncomfortable as we may be with the idea of change, it’s always a time of
growth and new opportunities. As strong and vibrant as Good Shepherd is, I’m sure that with God in charge, we
can smoothly and wisely navigate our time of transition and growth.

One of the resources available to the Endowment Board at Good Shepherd is headquartered
in New York City. It is the Episcopal Church Foundation, (EFC). The Foundation is an
independent, lay-led organization. An important part of its mission is to respond to the
needs of Episcopal faith communities by providing workshops, materials, a website, and
personal assistance as churches seek to establish and build healthy, vital planned giving
programs.
EFC has provided these services to the Episcopal Church since 1995. The Foundation’s support empowers endowment
boards such as ours to provide a means for members of the church family to become visionaries who invest in the future of
the church.
Church of the Good Shepherd has been represented at two recent workshops led by Jim Murphy, Senior Program Director
of Financial Resources at EFC. His workshops are lively, encouraging, and packed with great information. We do not need
to “reinvent the wheel” with such an outstanding organization standing ready to serve us. EFC’s web address is: www.
EpiscopalFoundation.org. You might want to check it out.

Thanks to all that continue to support Fishes & Loaves by filling
grocery bags or making donations. In the month of Dec. we gathered
274 pounds of food at Good Shepherd. During the month of November
we served 267 households a total of 400 boxes of food. Each year F
& L offers a choice of ham or turkey dinner box for Thanksgiving and
again for Christmas. The boxes this year will consist of the following:
12 to 15 Lb. turkey or a 5 Lb. Ham, 5 Lbs. of potatoes, 2 cans of
green beans, yams, cranberry sauce, fresh apple pie, and fresh rolls.
The retail cost of this at Ingles is $36.00 and if you would like to be
part of this effort to provide holiday dinners to needy families in our
community, please make checks payable to Fishes and Loaves Food
Pantry.

Angel Tree:
The angel tree went up in Hines Hall on Sunday,
November 23rd. More than 185 gifts were provided
by generous parishioners and we helped an additional
3 families. What a success! Thank you to all who
participated especially a special thanks to Mrs. Claus,
Sandra Swartzfeger and first time Santa, Peter Keck
who made the Hampton School and Learning Centers
Christmas party a big hit! The committee members

Christmas Tree Trimming:
The men prepare to put up the Christmas tree on
December 1. From left to right, Butch Woodward, Ed
Pearson and Len Pleasants. The trees were absolutely
beautiful this year! Thanks to our helpers and all who
came out to decorate at the tree trimming party on
December 3rd. Santa Claus was there and was eager
to assist!
The children presented Virginia with a HUGE box of
Whitman’s candy. Helping her enjoy it are: Syndey
Sinclair, Erin Turner and Simon Fowler.
The Good Shepherd choir gave a farewell party for
Virginia on November 23rd. An original musical
presentation by Jim Weir was one of the many
highlights of the evening.

The parish families and friends once again festively gathered in Hines Hall to decorate the church’s beautiful
Christmas tree. With ladders, tinsel, and decorations both new and old, the children of the church had a ball filling
the air with the spirit of Christmas. Even Santa Claus himself caught wind of the event, and made a surprise visit
to take orders for Christmas wishes.
Sunday school for both the younger and older youth will resume January 4th during the 10:30 service. Miss Beth
has many new winter “heroic” projects for our younger crew, while the older youth continue their study of Indiana
Jones and the true adventures of the Ark of the Covenant. We look forward to a great season of exciting journeys
and spiritual fun in the youth corner. Come join us!
