CAPITAL SUMMER PROGRAMS IN SUMMER 2015 June 6 - July 31, 2015 (6-weeks) The Fund for American Studies Since 1967, The Fund for American Studies (TFAS) has been a leader in educating young people from around the world in the fundamental principles of American democracy and our free market system. TFAS has been the launching pad for over 13,000 students who have participated in our programs in Washington, DC and around the world in Asia, Europe and South America. Alumni of our program are leaders in government, business, the media and nonprofit sector. Program Details Spend 8 weeks in the nation’s capital with 75 students from around the country and world who are all passionate about global issues. The intensive schedule is designed to maximize your time in Washington by combining learning in the classroom with practical internship experience. The Institute on Economics and International Affairs (IEIA) will give you an insider’s view of Washington, and by the end of the summer you may be ready to call DC home! Our comprehensive package includes a guaranteed internship placement, courses for transferable credit, furnished housing, a variety of guest lectures and briefings, as well as opportunities for professional development and networking. We truly provide the ultimate summer experience in Washington. Housing in furnished apartments on George Washington University’s campus, just steps from the White House and Department of State, as well as the Foggy Bottom Metrorail station. Academic courses in economics and ethics accredited by George Mason University. Classes are held in state-of-the-art facilities at George Mason University’s Arlington campus, conveniently located just four Metro stops away from student housing. Internships with newspapers, online publications, magazines, public relations firms, as well as television and radio stations throughout the Washington area. Each site is accessible to public transportation, making it easy to get from home to work to class and back again. The scholarship recipient is also eligible for the Summer Abroad Allowance (HK$6,000 for U.S. based Program), which is reimbursed after the program completion. Estimated student expenses: USD$5,950 Visa Process Once admitted, international students will need to obtain a student visa through George Mason University. GMU will provide students with the documents needed to obtain a J-1 student visa. The following materials are required to be submitted to TFAS staff within two weeks of enrollment: 1. A copy of the biographic (picture page) of the passport. 2. Documentation of the funds necessary to participate in the program. This includes any tuition balance owed as well as estimated living expenses and books. Please note that any scholarship received from TFAS should be deducted from the total funds to be documented. There are two options for this: Personal Funds – A bank statement or bank letter in English and on official bank letterhead indicating the type of account, the current balance, and the type of currency. Current balance must appear in numeric figures. The student’s name must appear on the bank document. Family Funds – 1. A letter of support in English signed and dated by a family member who intends to provide the student’s expenses. The letter must indicate in U.S. dollars the amount of funds to be provided, the duration of the support, and the individual’s relationship to the student. AND 2. A bank statement or bank letter in English and on official bank letterhead indicating the type of account, the current balance, and type of currency. Current balance must appear in numeric figures. The name of the family member providing support must appear on the bank document. Students will be responsible for paying all fees associated with the visa application process, including the SEVIS fee, estimated at 200 USD, and charges associated with sending visa documents via DHL, estimated at between 50 – 150 USD. Students are also responsible for funding their own travel to the U.S. unless provided for as part of their scholarship award.
