Diabetes and Hypertension is becoming a major public health problem in
developing countries. These two silent killers are responsible for
numbers of premature mortality and morbidity. It is amongst the
leading causes of blindness, renal failure, heart attacks, strokes and limb
amputations. Due to a compromised immune system, bacterial and
fungal infections are also common and pose a health hazard for people
with diabetes. Poor and disadvantaged people tend to be diagnosed later,
have less access to treatment and consequently suffer more acute and
late complications, limiting productivity and increasing economic
burden. Effective intervention reduces the health and economic burden
of diabetes. This requires focus on prevention – primary prevention –
promoting healthy living, and secondary prevention - reducing the
burden of complications by early diagnosis and proper care. Keeping the
Prevention of diabetes and hypertension in mind Dr. Nitin Shah,
managing trustee of Heart Foundation and Research Institute has
actively designed and implemented a project of screening diabetes and
hypertension in community.
Indians develop diabetes at a very young age, at least 10 to 15 years
earlier than the western population.
population An early occurrence of diabetes
gives ample time for development of the chronic complications of
diabetes. The incidence of diabetes increases with age. In India, the life
span has increased, hence more number of people with diabetes are
being detected.
