January 2015 Island in the Son UNITED METHODIST CHURCH Wesley Center Assists Needy Children Our January 4 communion offering will benefit Wesley Community Center, a local United Methodist facility that assists needy children in the Corpus Christi area. The Wesley Center has provided a loving, nurturing environment to low-income children and families for more than 70 years. CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS diverse curriculum allows children to grow cognitively and socially. Wesley provides transportation between its facility and four area homeless shelters as well as between schools and its Center. Homeless parents are provided childcare while they participate in activities that lead to education, employment, permanent housing, and/or seeking medical treatment. Wesley staff members prepare and provide about 25,500 meals annually. The Center was founded in 1942 to prepare 4- and 5year-old children of Hispanic migrant workers with school readiness programs and to teach them English. Mothers were taught sewing while children were in classes. Wesley provided those programs for 15 years until public schools incorporated them. Child care services were added in 1969 and hundreds benefit annually. Wesley operates the only food pantry open Monday through Friday in rural Nueces County. This much needed social service at both Centers serves over 6,500 people annually, the majority of whom are senior citizens and children. Community Services Volunteers in Mission and Wesley staff also help with quality of life projects for low-income elderly and/or handicapped. Wesley Community Center was selected as one of the first Coastal Bend United Way agencies in 1971. The State of Texas awarded Wesley a contract in 1988 to provide child care to assist working parents and parents attending school or training. Wesley is a 4 Star Texas Rising Star vendor, selected by the State of Texas for continuous quality early childhood development programs. In 2001, Wesley responded to requests from HUD and United Way and has provided services to over 2,000 homeless children. Betty Thomas, Thomas Many agencies provide quality child care services, but Wesley Community Center is different in three ways: Wesley serves a large number of homeless children living in emergency shelters and/or transitional housing facilities, and is one of the few quality childcare centers in rural Nueces County. The Please prayerfully consider helping with this important mission project on Sunday, January 4.
