The Steering Wheel of the Porsche 919 Hybrid
Setting the direction is the most trivial task of the steering
wheel in the Porsche 919 Hybrid. The drivers of the Class 1 Le
Mans prototypes in the FIA World Endurance Championship
have a computer in their hands. They operate 24 buttons and
switches on the front along with paddles on the back to control
the most complex racing car built by Porsche to date.
before they are lapped. When pushed once, it causes the
headlights to flash three times. In daylight, the drivers keep
their thumb on it almost permanently, as naturally the headlight
signal is more difficult to see at that time.
The red button at the top left of the steering wheel is also
frequently used. Its function is to demand electrical power from
the battery, often referred to as "boost". The drivers can boost
to pass but must be clever about rationing the power. The
amount of energy per lap is specified. The yardstick is one lap
in Le Mans, where six megajoules are available. The amounts
are converted accordingly for shorter circuits. The amount of
energy a driver uses in the middle of a lap to get free of the
traffic will not be available at the end in the straightaways.
Although it is called a steering wheel, it is not round but a flat
rectangle. The shape is due to the space required during driver
changes. Tall drivers, such as Mark Webber or Brendon Hartley
in particular, would otherwise have a difficult time getting in and
out of the vehicle quickly. There is a large display in the center,
which displays a multitude of information to the driver. This
includes the speed, what gear is engaged, the currently
selected motor management, and the charge status of the
lithium ion battery, which states how much electrical energy is
available to be called up to drive the front axle. The electric
motor on the front axle supplements the turbo charged two
liter, four cylinder combustion motor, which powers the rear
wheels. The control button at the top left is used to select the
displayed information, while the drivers use the control button
in the right grip handle to dim down the display brightness at
night. The identical control button in the left grip handle is for
the volume of the pit radio, and the fourth rotary-type control at
the top right varies the interval timing of the windshield wiper.
A bit further inside on the right and left of the steering wheel
are the plus and minus switches to adjust the front and rear
traction control and to distribute the brake balance between the
front and rear axle.
The buttons and switches on the steering wheel were carefully
positioned to accommodate the drivers and facilitate reliable
operation at racing pace. The most frequently used buttons are
positioned along the top outside edge, so they are easily
reached with the thumb. The blue button at the top right, which
is almost always in use, is the headlight flasher, used by the
fast prototypes to warn the slower vehicles in the WEC field

Porsche 911 RSRS Qualify Seventh and Eighth
Despite the challenge of working through the emotions of an
accident that sent team driver Richard Lietz (Austria) to the
hospital earlier in the day, the No. 912 Porsche North America
Porsche 911 RSR qualified eighth for tomorrow's Oak Tree
Grand Prix at Virginia International Raceway (VIR). As a result of
the effort, the Porsche North America factory team has kept
itself in strong contention in the hotly contested TUDOR United
SportsCar Championship GT Le Mans class where the first
eight positions on the grid were separated by less than one-half
of a second in today's qualifying session. The Team Falken Tire
customer Porsche 911 RSR qualified seventh.
the car he will share with Patrick Long (Playa del Rey,
California) tomorrow. Alongside him in the fourth row of the grid
will be Bryan Sellers (Braselton, Georgia) and Wolf Henzler
(Germany) in No. 17 Team Falken Tire Porsche 911 RSR.
Sellers qualified at 1:44.322 for seventh position.
Following this morning's accident in turn three of the 3.27-mile,
17-turn VIR circuit, Richard Lietz was treated for a fractured
arm at an area hospital and has been released. He will return
home to Austria where he will undergo surgery.
The No. 911 Porsche North America Porsche 911 RSR Lietz
was driving when he hit fluid and went off, was heavily damaged
when the No. 3 Corvette also spun on the fluid and into Lietz'
stationary car. That chassis will be replaced. The team is
working diligently to have the car ready for Sunday's 4:05 ET
green flag.
The No. 911 entry did not make a qualifying attempt as a result
of the practice session incident. Following the two-car accident,
Lietz was sent to a nearby hospital for evaluation. It was
determined the Porsche works driver had a fractured arm and
will not race in Sunday afternoon's event.
Porsche 911 RSR
With Lietz out for the two-hour, 45-minute race, Christensen will
start the No. 911 before relinquishing the seat to Nick Tandy
(Great Britain), Lietz' full-season teammate. The Dane will then
finish the Oak Tree Grand Prix in the No. 912 after Long's
opening stint in the car...

A total of 11 Porsche 911-based racecars will be running in
tomorrow's combined GT classes-only race. Three of the most
advanced 911s ever produced, the Porsche 911 RSR, will race
in the GT Le Mans (GTLM) class for overall honors. Eight
Porsche 911 GT America's, also based on the
seventh-generation of the iconic sports car, will run in the GT
Daytona (GTD) category.
Michael Christensen (Denmark) took the No. 912 Porsche
North America 911 RSR on track for the 15-minute GTLM
qualifying session, and turned his fastest times of the weekend,
qualifying in the eighth position. His best lap of one-minute,
44.422-seconds was less than one-half second from the pole in
