Approaching Host
Organisations
Who should I approach?
Internships through the Postgraduate Advantage Scheme will be awarded competitively to students who can
demonstrate that the experience will benefit them professionally. Therefore, when you think about which
organisations to approach, you should consider:
•
•
•
•
Your career aspirations
The skills you want to develop
Opportunities to translate the learning from your studies into the wider world
Practicalities such as the location of the organisation and the feasibility of completing the work within 100 hours
What should I write or say?
Please remember that when you contact an organisation, you are acting as a representative of the University of
Sheffield. Therefore we expect you to be professional and polite. We recommend that you include the ‘Guidance for
Hosts’ document, which is available at the Postgraduate Advantage Website:

Subject: Would you like to host a fully-funded University of Sheffield postgraduate intern?
Dear__________
I am hoping to take part in the Postgraduate Advantage Scheme which will involve me completing an internship within a
host organisation.
The Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Sheffield is piloting a scheme of 100-hour internships for
its postgraduate students. Students will be paid by the University, and will undertake projects with not-forprofit,charitable, public sector and SME organisations.
I am approaching you specifically as (insert reason for choosing this organisation here and why you would be suitable
to work at their organisation). The internships will take place between April and July 2015, and will be 100 hours in
length. The working pattern is flexible and to be negotiated between the host organisation and myself as the intern.
I have attached the Postgraduate Advantage Guidance for Hosts document, which gives more information about
the Scheme. If you would consider hosting an internship and think that I could be suitable, I would welcome the
opportunity to discuss this further with you.
Once I have secured an offer of an internship in principle, I am required to submit an application form to the University
of Sheffield which outlines the role and responsibilities. The deadline for my application is 1st March 2015, although
applications will be approved on a first come, first served basis.
Subject to their approval I would then be able to start at your earliest convenience. Applications will be approved on a
first come, first served basis and I am required to submit this application by 1st March 2015.
Thank you for taking the time to read this email
Best wishes
