ST. MARY’S CHURCH
Pasterka is the name given to the Polish Midnight Mass. Pasterka means Shepherds Mass and it is filled with all the joy and
pageantry the Polish people can muster for this Holy commemoration of the moment when God became man. The Crib is
blessed, processions are held, the bells are rung, and the choir
is at their best. Everything and everyone is directed to the Holy
Christ Child, God, Who became like us to save us!
___________________________________________________
‘For today in the city of David a Savior has been born for you who is Messiah
and Lord’ (Luke 2:11). This was the message of the angels to the shepherds. A
Savior has been born...FOR YOU. Yes,
the Messiah came to offer salvation to all,
even to these lowly shepherds. They were
simple folk, not highly regarded. They
lived, as it were, on the fringes of society.
Yet in God’s marvelous Providence, the
angels sang the first Gloria for them to
hear. And they were entrusted with the
message of great joy: ‘A Savior has been
born...FOR YOU.’
Living on the periphery, as they did, perhaps the shepherds
felt the full force of isolation and loneliness. Perhaps they felt
the pain of poverty, the burden of labor, and the desire for purpose. But, here they were, tending their flocks in the bleak darkness of night, when light burst into their marginalized realm. Not
only was a Savior born, but He was born for them. He was born
for all.
Again and again, Pope Francis has encouraged us to proclaim
the Good News to all. He dares us not to stay locked up in our
own small, secure social sphere. We must be willing to be disciples to the whole world, and that includes those who dwell in the
fringes of society –the poor, the abandoned, the destitute, the
lonely, the prisoner, and the immigrant.
He spoke these words during World Youth Day 2013: ’Do
not be afraid to go and to bring Christ into every area of life, to
the fringes of society, even to those who seem farthest away,
most indifferent. The Lord seeks all, He wants everyone to feel
the warmth of His mercy and His love.’
This Christmas, we have the opportunity to give Jesus a great
gift of love. We can give Him the gift of our own brave hearts.
Hearts that are willing to break out of the prison of our own
fears and limitations. We can give Him hearts that are aflame
with His own love for humanity. Hearts that are willing to be
vulnerable. Hearts that are willing to go to the ends of the earth
to proclaim: ’A Savior has been born FOR YOU.’ Merry Christmas, Family!

H
e was in the beginning with God. All
things came to be through Him, and
without Him nothing came to be. What
came to be through Him was life, and
this life was the light of the human race.

Sharing the Gospel:
On Christmas, follow the example of the angels. "Praise God in
Heaven. Peace on earth to everyone who pleases God." If God is
happy with you, do not worry what others think. Be Joyful - share
Joy. Be Excited - share your Enthusiasm. Be Sorry for your sins share Seeds of forgiveness. Be Up for God - share Uplifting stories.
Be Strong in Faith - share God's Scripture - food for the soul.
Prayer:
Lord, help me see You in the faces of
my family, my friends, and others
around me.
Something to Draw:
Draw the angels singing over Jesus,
Mary, and Joseph.
Mission for the Week:
God, I will take baby food, diapers, and
milk to a young mother with a baby.
FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT
Christmas prayer
I said a
for you
because the season’s near. I didn’t ask for riches
but for gifts so much more dear. I asked for
joyful gatherings with your family all around,
and for carols to inspire you with their old familiar sound. I asked for quiet moments in your
heart on Christmas morn, for a special time to
celebrate the Savior who was born. I asked for
friends to send their best that you might know
they care. I asked for peace and love and hope;
and I know God heard my prayer.

Polish Christmas Carols are sung until
the 2nd of February. The Christmas season,
for the Polish people, starts on Christmas
Eve. Advent is Advent –a time of preparation and anticipation. Unlike many Western
cultures, where Christmas carols and celebrations begin by December 1st, the Polish
people spend that time in prayerful waiting.
The time after Christmas is the time for
celebration.
Unlike the Christmas songs of other countries the Polish carol (called a Koleda) is
not only a prayer, but it is also a story –a
kind of musical drama telling of the miraculous birth of Jesus. These Koledy are a
musical expression of genius and profound
religious conviction. Many Polish carols
date from the early 17th century and reflect, not only the folk culture of the day, but the royal and courtly like of the noble.
The word Koleda is taken from the Latin word meaning the first
day of the month and reflects the ancient custom of pre-Christmas
feasts in mid-winter. With the coming of Christianity, the theme
became the birth of Jesus.
Many of the Koledy are based on the majestic Polonez, a royal and
stately dance from the courts of Polish kings. One such Koleda,
’W Zlobie Lezy’ was based on the Polonez played at the coronation of Wladyslaw IV (1632 –1648).
Adam Mickiewicz, in writing about the beauty of Polish Christmas carols, said: ’I doubt whether there is another country, which
can boast of such a collection of carols as Poland has. It would not
be easy to find any other nation’s poetry with feelings so pure, of
such an extreme sweetness and delicacy.’

20+K+M+B+15 AN EPIPHANY BLESSING FOR THE HOME
Frs. Jeff & Piotr would like to offer a New Year Epiphany Blessing of your
home anytime from January 4 thru January 18, 2015.
Please call the Rectory to sign up for the house blessing.
This short liturgy is a way of marking our homes, usually at the main entrance, with sacred signs and symbols as we ask God’s blessing upon those
who live, work, or visit throughout the coming year. Although the service is
intended for use in home dwellings like apartments, condos, houses, and
college dorms, it is certainly appropriate when adapted for use in offices,
places of business, nursing homes, hospital rooms, and extended-care facilities.
The blessing has three parts: 1) Reciting a short prayer together, 2) Sprinkling
Holy Water throughout the home which is traditionally believed to aid in warding
off evil spirits and angels come to “dwell and keep us in peace, security, love,
and grace.” 3) Using chalk to mark on the doorframe: in English 20 + C + M + B
+ 15 or in Polish "20 +K+M+B+ 15".
(The letters have two meanings. They are the initials of the customary names
of the Three Magi: Caspar, Melchior, and Balthazar. They also abbreviate the
Latin words “Christus Mansionem Benedicat”, “May Christ bless the house”.
The numbers of the year are divided before and after these letters. The crosses (+) represent the protection of Christ.)
