JEO Details - Oglethorpe University

JAMES EDWARD OGLETHORPE (JEO)
SCHOLARSHIP
ABOUT THE AWARD
The James Edward Oglethorpe (JEO) Scholars competition recognizes high school seniors with an
outstanding record of academic achievement and great potential to contribute to the community life of
Oglethorpe University. Up to five full-tuition JEO scholarships will be awarded following Scholarship
Weekend, but remember, you guarantee yourself a merit award as soon as you arrive on campus.
Each James Edward Oglethorpe Scholar will receive:
• A four-year full tuition scholarship, valued at over $131,000.
• An invitation to enroll in an exploratory honors seminar during the freshman year.
• A stipend in support of a short-term study-abroad course.
JEO winners will be required to accept or decline the award and submit a $300 enrollment deposit by
May 1, 2015. (A winner who does not respond by May 1 will forfeit the offer of full tuition.) JEO
Scholars are required to live on campus and will be expected to assist with future Scholarship Weekend
and admission events during their time at Oglethorpe.
ABOUT THE COMPETITION
Three qualification activities will take place on Saturday, January 24, 2015. These three components seek
to identify students who are articulate and dynamic as well as top academic achievers, and the scholarship
committee recommends up to five JEO Scholars based in significant part on students’ performance in
these sessions. We hope to go beyond grades and scores on paper and get to know you as a living,
breathing, thinking person. Past candidates have praised the competition format as a great insight into the
uniqueness of OU: as one scholar told us, “I wish there had been more time in the interviews and
seminars; I was enjoying both thoroughly!”
Seminar:
Oglethorpe professors and small groups of scholarship candidates gather for a
discussion-based seminar that centers on a topic of common interest. A preview
of the seminar topics is attached to this sheet, but you are required to rank your
seminar preferences online and later to download and review a reading related to
your assigned topic. As a participant, you will get to experience an Oglethorpe
classroom setting at the same time that our faculty members can observe the
qualities that you bring to the discussion at hand.
Essay:
Following the discussion session, each candidate has an opportunity to respond in
writing to the seminar. The prompt for this essay will be related to the seminar
discussion, and the scholarship committee will review this writing sample as a
further indication of your thought processes and self-expression.
Interview:
Members of the Oglethorpe alumni community meet individually with candidates
for a one-on-one personal interview lasting about fifteen minutes.
The scholarship committee will also give consideration to each candidate’s academic achievement and
involvement as evidenced in the admission application.
