STATEMENT OF OUR PARISH MISSION
The Catholic Community of Saint Paul Cathedral Parish, empowered
by the Holy Spirit and nourished by the Eucharist, proclaims,
witnesses and shares the Good News of Jesus Christ. The Mother
Church of the Diocese of Pittsburgh is uniquely situated in the midst of
academic, medical and cultural centers. We invite all to join us as we
live our faith and reach out in charity to those in need. As we move into
our future, we affirm our baptismal call to holiness by deepening our
faith and loving one another, all for the honor and glory of God.

FROM THE HEART OF YOUR PASTOR
SCRIPTURE REFLECTION
The promise of the Messiah reaches its climax as Advent draws to a close. Nathan reveals to King David
the promise that will be fulfilled: “The Lord will establish
a house for you, and your house and your kingdom
shall endure forever before me; your throne shall stand
firm forever.” The promised Messiah will come from the
house of David and bring redemption to his people.
This is the one, Saint Paul, says in our second reading,
“who will strengthen you and bring about the obedience
of faith, to the only wise God through Jesus Christ be
glory forever and ever.”
The fourth Sunday of Advent calls us to reflect on the
extraordinary action of God in the sending of his Son,
one who set aside his divinity to take on fully, except
the stain of sin, our human nature. Saint Augustine
claimed that the Incarnation was a far greater act of
God than even the work of creation. St. Gregory of
Nyssa wrote, “Sick, our nature demanded to be healed;
fallen, to be raised up; dead, to rise again. Captives we
awaited a Savior; prisoners, help; slaves, a liberator.
Did these things not move God to descend to human
nature and visit it, since humanity was in so miserable
and unhappy a state?”
The Word became flesh so that we might know God’s
love. This is what is affirmed for us in the Gospel of
John: “God so loved the world that he gave his only
Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but
have eternal life.” Through the obedience of Mary and
the trust of Joseph, the child Jesus was born into this
world, a child that today’s Gospel reminds us was
named Jesus. “He will be great and will be called Son
of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the
throne of David his father, and he will rule over the
house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will
be no end.”
The Catechism of the Catholic Church writes that
“belief in the true Incarnation of the Son of God is the
distinctive sign of Christian faith. By this you know the
Spirit of God: every spirit which confesses that Jesus
Christ has come in the flesh is of God.” Our Advent
hymn is a call to faith in the presence of the One who
saves: O come, o come Emmanuel and ransom captive Israel. This is truly “God with us.” We prepare now
to celebrate the birth of the Eternal Word, the one who
is true God and true man, in the unity of one divine person; for this reason Jesus Christ is the one and only
mediator between God and man, the one who can restore us to the fullness of life and grace, and complete
union with our Father in heaven. We prepare to allow
the Christ-child to enter more deeply into our hearts this
Christmas season and to experience the fullness of
grace and life that he brings. We await, as well, the
return of the One who has already come into the world
and whose second coming will bring to fulfillment the
promises of God to all who are faithful. We sing with
the psalmist: “Forever I will sing the goodness of the
Lord.” Come Lord Jesus come!
BUILDING A FUTURE OF HOPE CAMPAIGN. I need
your help in making our campaign a success. As you
know I spoke at each of the Masses last week asking
for your support in this important campaign for the well
being of our Cathedral Church. We are asking each of
our parishioners to review the case statement and this
call to be part of a campaign that will strengthen our
parish community and help so many people. Please
consider making a sacrificial gift – above and beyond
what you give in the offertory and parish share. This gift
can be paid off over a five year period so it leverages
the kind of gift each family can make. IF YOU HAVE
BEEN ASKED AND HAVE NOT YET RETURNED
YOUR PLEDGE PLEASE MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO
DO SO THIS WEEK. Already we have had an extraordinary response from those with whom we have met.
These results are being detailed for you in the special
insert in the bulletin each week. Each and every one of
us has been blessed by God with many gifts. I can only ask that you prayerfully reflect on what you can do in
responding to this campaign. We can only be successful if everyone in our parish participates and helps in
whatever way you are able. Whatever you give is a gift
from your heart and it will be a blessing to us and
blessing to you and to your family. I am happy to talk
to anyone about this campaign personally and appreciate your openness to talking to the parish volunteers
who are helping to meet with our parishioners about the
campaign. I need your support to make this effort a
successful one. Thank you for your help in making our
Building a Future of Hope Campaign a success for the
greater glory and praise to Almighty God and his
Church. May God bless you.
CHRISTMAS GREETINGS. While this bulletin is for the
Fourth Sunday of Advent, it also serves as the bulletin
for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. On Thursday,
December 25, we mark in a solemn and joyous way the
Birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ. In the mystery of the
Incarnation, the Church confesses that Jesus is inseparably true God and true man. As the Catechism of the
Catholic Church makes clear: “He is truly the Son of
God who, without ceasing to be God and Lord, became
a man and our brother.” (CCC 469). St. John Chrysos-
PAGE 3

tom spoke eloquently on this mystery: “O onlybegotten Son and Word of God, immortal being, you
who deigned for our salvation to become incarnate of
the holy Mother of God and ever-virgin Mary, you who
without change became man and were crucified, O
Christ our God, you who by your death have crushed
death, you who are one of the Holy Trinity, glorified with
the Father and the Holy Spirit, save us.” Let us not forget in our celebration of Christmas that our gaze should
rest on the Christ-child, born in Bethlehem over 2000
years ago, Jesus Christ, truly God and truly man, consubstantial with the Father. What joy we feel this day
as we celebrate the birth of our Savior, the one described so beautifully by the prophet Isaiah in our
Christmas reading. “And they name him, WonderCounselor, God-Hero, Father-Forever, Prince of
Peace!”
I extend a very special word of welcome to all who join
us for the celebration of Christmas this year. To all our
faithful parishioners and to your family members who
join us in these days; to our college students and to
those in graduate studies; to all those who are visiting
us and come from far and near. Welcome to Saint Paul
Cathedral. We are delighted that you are here and worshiping with us on this Christmas Day. I call your attention to a Christmas letter from myself, Father Thomas
and Father Verona, which is inserted into this bulletin
and is available at the doors of Church. Please share it
with family, neighbors, friends, and perhaps some of
our parishioners who may not be coming to Church.
We, along with the parish staff, and our priests in residence: Father Freedy, Father Ward and Father Ulam,
extend to each and every one of you our best wishes
for a blessed and joyous Christmas celebration. In a
very special way, we will be remembering you in our
Masses on Christmas Day and in the octave of Christmas, and promise you our prayers in this holy season.
May this Christmas be a time of joy and peace for you,
your families and all your loved ones. Merry Christmas
one and all!
THE BLESSING OF THE INFANT JESUS STATUES
from the nativity crèche or mangers in the homes of our
parishioners and visitors are being given today at all the
Masses. This is a beautiful custom that takes the
blessing of the Church into your home and makes the
Christmas crèche or manger a special blessing to you
family during this Christmas season. Please gather in
the front section of the Church as soon as Mass is concluded and the celebrant will bless the statues.
BLESSING OF THE CHRISTMAS TREE AND
CRECHE AT HOME: Families are invited to join
together on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day and
say a prayer together blessing your Christmas
tree and crèche. You can pray this prayer together: “God of every nation and people, from the
very beginning of creation you have made manifest your love; when our need for a Savior was
great you sent your Son to be born of the Blessed
Virgin Mary. To our lives he brings joy and
peace, justice, mercy and love. Lord, bless all
who look upon this manger. May it remind us of
the humble birth of Jesus and raise our thoughts
to him. Let your blessing come upon us as we
light this Christmas tree. May this tree, arrayed in
splendor and light, be a sign of the joy that fills
our hearts this Christmas day and throughout the
new year. We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.”
CHRISTMAS DAY MASSES are scheduled for
Wednesday, December 24th (Christmas Eve) at
4:00 pm, 6:00 pm, and 10:00 pm (with Bishop Zubik
presiding) and on Thursday, December 25th
(Christmas Day) at 6:30 am, 8:00 am, 10:00 am and
12:00 Noon.
NEW YEAR’S DAY MASSES are scheduled for
Wednesday, December 31st (New Year’s Eve) at
6:00 pm and on Thursday, January 1st (New Year’s
Day) at 6:45 am, 8:15 am and 12:05 pm. January
1st is the Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God
and is a holyday of obligation, requiring Mass attendance for all Catholics.
A SECOND COLLECTION WILL BE TAKEN UP AT
ALL MASSES ON CHRISTMAS EVE AND CHRISTMAS DAY. This collection will benefit programs in the
diocese that serve the needs of Children and Youth.
Your generosity, as always, means a great deal, and in
a special way at this Christmas season will be a blessing to those children and youth in our community who
have great needs.
CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR PARISHIONER,
KYLE ANDERSON, who successfully defended his
doctoral dissertation on Monday, December 8.

A SPECIAL AFTERNOON OF EUCHARISTIC ADORATION AND BENEDICTION is scheduled for next Sunday, December 28. There is no
more beautiful and uplifting experience of prayer than to sit quietly in the
presence of our Lord Jesus Christ in the Holy Eucharist. As St. John
Vianney described it: “He looks at me and I look at him.” We are given
the strength and grace to live out our Christian faith by the power of the
Lord. Please come and spend time in quiet adoration and prayer before
the Blessed Sacrament from 1:00 until 5:00 pm. It is a wonderful way to
take time in the midst of the busy Christmas season to welcome the
Christ-child. A special celebration of evening prayer, along with Benediction, will begin at 5:00 pm. All are welcome and encouraged to participate.
WE WILL BE DECORATING
THE CHURCH FOR CHRISTMAS on Monday afternoon
around 1 pm, Monday evening
around 6:30 pm and on Tuesday afternoon at 1 pm. We
can always use any extra help
so please feel free to come by
and assist in the final decorations for the season. All are
welcome to join us.
A SPECIAL THANK YOU to all who volunteer in the various ministries at the Cathedral. I am truly grateful to so many who use their gift
of time and talent as altar servers, sacristans, lectors, extraordinary
ministers of Holy Communion, ushers and greeters, the television
ministry, the choir and hand bell choir members, and all our cantors,
to all who help with the grounds and environment, to our money counters, food bank volunteers, pastoral and finance council members and
all who volunteer in anyway. We appreciate greatly your service to
the Cathedral parish and all you do to help us in making the celebration of each and every Mass a very beautiful, prayerful and uplifting
experience for all who are here. I would ask that each of you stop
into the sacristy this week over Christmas to receive a small, but very
important, token of appreciation for your ministry to our parish. Father
Thomas, Father Verona, and I extend to each of you our deepest appreciation for your service and our prayers for a blessed and joyous
Christmas.
CONFESSIONS WILL BE
HEARD on Monday, December 22 and Tuesday, December 23 at 12:35 pm. These
are the final confessions for
Advent. No confessions will
be heard on December 24.
OUR WEEKLY WEDNESDAY EVENING NOVENA TO
OUR MOTHER OF PERPETUAL HELP WILL NOT BE
HELD either Wednesday, December 24 or Wednesday, December 31. The novena will resume on Wednesday, January 7. Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament
begins at 7:00 pm and a priest is available for confessions during this time
until 7:30 pm. The novena prayers begin at 7:30 pm and include a blessing of the sick and an opportunity to venerate the image our Our Lady of
Perpetual Help. This novena has a long history and Our Lady provides
extraordinary blessings and graces to those who participate. The novena
concludes with Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. Please make an
effort and join us – you will be rewarded greatly and our parish will be enriched as we entrust ourselves to the loving care of Mary our Mother of
Perpetual Help.
A SPECIAL THANK YOU TO FATHER STUBNA’S SISTER AND
BROTHER-IN-LAW, Mary Beth and Michael Presutti, for donating the
two Christmas trees for the rectory this year. One is 13 foot, the other is
10 foot. They cut the trees down at a tree farm in Indiana and delivered
them to the rectory and they are beautiful. Many thanks for their generosity and kindness in making the rectory extra beautiful for Christmas
this year! May God bless you.
KQV RADIO (1410 AM) will
broadcast the 10:00 pm
Christmas Eve Mass live from
the Cathedral and will rebroadcast that Mass on Christmas morning at 6:00 am. We
are grateful to Bill Dickey and
KQV for making the Mass
available to so many on
Christmas.
THE CHRISTMAS OCTAVE
is a special time of blessing
and grace and I invite you to
come to Mass during this special week. We celebrate a
number of beautiful feast days
during this octave, including
St. Stephen, the first martyr
(December 26), St. John the
Apostle and Evangelist
(December 27), , the Feast of
the Holy Family (December
28), St. Thomas a Becket
(December 29) and Pope St.
Sylvester I (December 31).

MONTHLY MEDITATION FROM
KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS FOR
DECEMBER: Because the family
that prays together stays together, we want to learn to pray as a
family. “Prayer needs to become
a regular habit in the daily life of
each family. Prayer is thanksgiving, praise of God, asking for forgiveness, supplication and invocation. In all of these forms the
prayer of the family has much to
say to God.” (St. John Paul
II, Letter to Families, §10) “For
the People of God, Mary represents the model of every expression of their prayer life. In particular, she teaches Christians how
to turn to God to ask for his help
and support in the various circumstances of life. Her motherly
intercession at the wedding in
Cana and her presence in the
Upper Room at the Apostles’
side as they prayed in expectation of Pentecost suggest that
the prayer of petition is an essential form of cooperation in furthering the work of salvation in the
world. By following her model,
the Church learns to be bold in
her asking, to persevere in her
intercessions and, above all, to
implore the gift of the Holy Spirit.” (St. John Paul II, Audience,
Sept. 10, 1997, §4-5).
CHRISTMAS FLOWERS.
I thank everyone who gave
donations for the Christmas
flowers in memory of their
deceased loved ones, family and friends. The list of
those intentions has been
printed in today’s bulletin
and these intentions will
hold a very special place in
our prayer over the Christmas season, particularly at
Mass. Your generous response is greatly appreciated.CHILDLINE - Report suspected

QUESTION OF THE WEEK. Why do we omit the singing of the Gloria
during Advent? ANSWER: By omitting the singing of the Gloria during
! Masses of Advent, the liturgy emphasizes Advent’s character as a
the
season of waiting with great expectation. It speaks to the penitential
nature of this season as well. It is a time that we are asked to enter a
more quiet and solemn reflection of our sins and the need for conversion
of life through prayer, discipline and works of charity as we prepare not
only for the celebration of our Lord’s birth, but as we await his second
coming. By omitting the Gloria during Advent, which is the song of
praise sung by the heavenly choirs of angels in Bethlehem on that first
Christmas night, we long for the night of Christmas when we can sing
the angels’ song anew. The Gloria resounds on Christmas Eve and
Christmas Day with renewed force and greater beauty because of its absence for the 4 weeks of Advent.

SAINT OF THE WEEK. December 26 marks the feast of SAINT STEPHEN, the first martyr of the Church. In the Acts of the Apostles, St.
Luke describes Stephen as a man “full of faith and the Holy Spirit.” He
was chosen by the Apostles to serve as a deacon and distribute alms to
the poor. He began to preach the Gospel with great enthusiasm and
joy, so filled with the Holy Spirit, that he was able to perform miracles
attracting the attention of the whole of Jerusalem. He was called before
the Sanhedrin, accused of blasphemy but with great courage defended
his faith in Jesus Christ. He was the first martyr of the Church, his
death described in the Acts of the Apostles, as one that was like that of
Jesus. As he was being stoned, he cried out, “Lord Jesus, receive my
Spirit,” and said as he was dying, “Lord do not hold this sin against
them.” He is for us the model of courage in the face of difficulties and
sufferings. When we fear the worst, we can also take courage in the
presence and power of Jesus Christ who will see us through any of life’s
challenges.
PASSING FROM DEATH TO NEW LIFE. We extend our deepest sympathies to the family of BETSY O’DONNELL who was
buried from our parish this past week. May she and all the souls
of the faithful departed rest in peace.
