Explore the growing field of horticultural therapy (HT) in an engaging and challenging inter-disciplinary
program. Courses will appeal to healthcare professionals, educators and interpreters, horticulturists,
landscape designers and others wishing to learn more about connecting people and plants; and to those
considering career opportunities in horticultural therapy and therapeutic horticulture (TH).
Now in its ninth year, this HT professional development program offers a qualified team of instructors
led by registered horticultural therapist, Ann Kent HTM; courses and workshops at facilities and gardens
in Vancouver and on Vancouver Island; and collaborations with healthcare and community agencies.
The four HT Certificate courses can be taken in any order and provide up to 200 hours of study:
130 classroom hours plus field trips, tutorials, and written projects. The HT Certificate courses are
recognized by the Canadian Horticultural Therapy Association toward professional registration as a
horticultural therapist and by several other professional associations for continuing education credits.
The fee for each four day course is $525.00 and includes instruction, course handbook, and all plant and
activity supplies. There is no GST. Class size is small and limited to a maximum of ten participants.
Instructional day for the fall session is typically 8:45 am to 5:15 pm.
I. Horticultural Therapy – Programming for All Seasons - Vancouver, Fall 2015
Explore HT programs and their year-round potential, using indoor and outdoor gardening, nature
activities, floristry, and botanical crafts. This popular keystone course addresses skill sets required by
the TH or HT activity leader and includes program adaptations for various populations. A review of TH
and HT programs in Canada and scope of practice for TH and HT is provided.
Wed. September 30 through Sat. October 3
HT - Programming is often taken as a stand alone course by those who work in community centres,
complex care facilities, adult day care centres, schools, and community gardens. It provides an excellent
overview of the skill sets and resources required to deliver plant and nature-based programs.
II. Horticultural Therapy Techniques – Session Planning & Evaluation - Vancouver, Fall 2015
The use of horticulture and related activities in the context of small group and one-to-one therapy
sessions for several populations is studied and practiced. The importance of determining specific
objectives and measurable outcomes for program participants and using assessment and evaluation
tools is emphasized. Many useful templates are provided.

III. Creating Therapeutic Gardens - Vancouver, Fall 2015
Attributes of accessible and healing garden spaces, plant choices suitable for therapeutic gardens and
habitat gardens, and safe garden practices are explored through guided walks and hands-on activities.
Students apply evidence-based audit tools to several garden sites and compare use of grade level,
vertical, and raised bed gardens. Also included are units on planning and funding therapeutic gardens.

IV. The Practice of Horticultural Therapy - Vancouver, Fall 2015
Focus is on special populations and elements of HT practice such as the horticultural therapist’s role in a
healthcare or educational team, professional ethics, cultural contexts, TH and HT program evaluation,
and differences between self-employment and salaried work. Prior completion of HT - Programming or
HT Techniques is required.

Course intake is continuous. Students can spread their course load over a longer period by taking one or
