TUBERCULOSIS SCREENING FOR STUDENTS AND ACT HEALTH CARE WORKERS
Tuberculosis (TB) disease is found in every country of the world. Australia has
approximately 1,000 cases each year and 15 - 20 cases in the ACT. In Australia, there is
excellent antibiotic treatment for TB and people are expected to recover fully from the
disease.
PLACE AND TIME FOR SCREENING.
TB Services for the ACT is provided by The Department of Respiratory and Sleep
Medicine located on Level 2 of Building 1 at Canberra Hospital, Yamba Drive,
Garran.
Tuberculosis screening involves Tuberculin Skin Testing and/or a chest x-ray, depending
on an individual’s previous screening results and health history. A previous BCG
vaccination will not necessarily afford you any protection against TB. TB screening is
mandated for Student Pre –Clinical Placement and Pre-Employment for ACT health staff.
The fee will be $38.32 for students only and will need to be paid on the day of
screening. The DRSM will provide details on where to make the payment when you
present to DRSM. Current ACT health care workers will not be charged for this
service.
The TB Screening clinic is a drop-in clinic so an appointment is not required. Screening
times are as follows:
Monday:
1- 3.30pm
Tuesday:
10 - 12noon and 1- 3.30pm
Friday:
1- 3.30pm
(Except on Public Holidays)
*Please note that you are required to return 3 days later. No appointment is required.
(Tuberculin skin testing cannot be attended if previous live vaccines have been
given in the last 4 weeks – e.g. MMR and Chicken pox).
If you are unable to attend the above times please call the Department of Respiratory and
Sleep Medicine Unit on (02) 62442066.
A clinical clearance form will be provided to you by The Department of Respiratory and
Sleep Medicine on completion of screening. You will need to provide a copy of this form to
the Occupational Medicine Unit (OMU) if you are employed at the Canberra Hospital.
