Australia has approximately 1,000 cases each year and 15 - 20 cases in the ACT. In Australia, there is excellent antibiotic treatment for TB and people are expected to recover fully from the disease. PLACE AND TIME FOR SCREENING. TB Services for the ACT is provided by The Department of Respiratory and Sleep Medicine located on Level 2 of Building 1 at Canberra Hospital, Yamba Drive, Garran. Tuberculosis screening involves Tuberculin Skin Testing and/or a chest x-ray, depending on an individual’s previous screening results and health history. A previous BCG vaccination will not necessarily afford you any protection against TB. TB screening is mandated for Student Pre –Clinical Placement and Pre-Employment for ACT health staff. The fee will be $38.32 for students only and will need to be paid on the day of screening. The DRSM will provide details on where to make the payment when you present to DRSM. Current ACT health care workers will not be charged for this service. The TB Screening clinic is a drop-in clinic so an appointment is not required. Screening times are as follows: Monday: 1- 3.30pm Tuesday: 10 - 12noon and 1- 3.30pm Friday: 1- 3.30pm (Except on Public Holidays) *Please note that you are required to return 3 days later. No appointment is required. (Tuberculin skin testing cannot be attended if previous live vaccines have been given in the last 4 weeks – e.g. MMR and Chicken pox). If you are unable to attend the above times please call the Department of Respiratory and Sleep Medicine Unit on (02) 62442066. A clinical clearance form will be provided to you by The Department of Respiratory and Sleep Medicine on completion of screening. You will need to provide a copy of this form to the Occupational Medicine Unit (OMU) if you are employed at the Canberra Hospital.
