EDUCATIONAL APPROVAL
The training programme has educational approval confirmed by
the regional Postgraduate Dental Dean.
Main duties and responsibilities
This full time training post will be based at Bristol Dental Hospital and School, University
Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust. Progress in training will be regularly assessed and
reviewed at appraisal meetings with the Educational Supervisor. Regular informal meetings

with Consultants will take place in addition to more formal meetings with all the clinical
trainers, including the Programme Director. Annual reports will be made to the annual review
of competence progression (ARCP) panel organised by the department of Postgraduate Dental
Education, Health Education South West and progression at each stage of training is dependent
on a satisfactory outcome at this review.



The training programme will require the trainee spending approximately 80% of their
time over a 3 year period carrying out Clinical Special Care Dentistry training with the
remaining 20% associated with obtaining skills in dealing with management
issues/clinical administration/audit/CPD training, plus a combination of other relevant
material.
It is expected that the SCD training programme will result in a successful outcome in the
Tri-Collegiate Specialist Membership Examination in Special Care Dentistry. Progress
towards this outcome will be monitored by the trainers in the clinical setting and the
S.W. Deanery at the annual ARCP.
The Special Care Dentistry (SCD) training programme is designed to fulfil the
requirements of the GDC leading to the award of a certificate of Completion of Specialty
Training (CCST).
The StR post will be for a period of 3 years full-time during which the trainee will be expected to
work towards developing a clinical portfolio across all the domains in the SCD curriculum, as
specified by the SAC and Tri-Collegiate examiners for SCD. Towards the end of this period, after
a minimum of 30 months of full-time training, it would be expected that the StR would be
eligible to sit the Tri-Collegiate Membership examination in SCD and, if successful, would be
eligible at 36 months for completion of training, enabling the award of a CCST in SCD and
registration on the GDC specialist list in Special Care Dentistry.
At this time there are no further formal training positions in SCD following entry on the
specialist list
University of Bristol Dental Hospital and School
The Dental Hospital, situated in the University Hospitals Bristol complex in the centre of the
city, is affiliated with the University of Bristol Dental School. Bristol University department of
Oral and Dental Science is responsible for the delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate
teaching programmes and clinical teaching occurs at the Bristol Dental Hospital and School,
with outreach teaching at South Bristol Community Hospital.
The Department of Oral & Dental Science has a strong research culture and is recognised as one
of the leading research schools in the UK. Research in the Department is managed under three
autonomous research groups:
1. Applied Clinical and Materials Science
2. Infection and Immunlogy
3. Lifecourse Epidemiology and Population Oral Health

Each group comprises a mix of clincal academics and basic scientists who support the ethos of
integration and translation of oral and dental research. We address questions of high
relevance to the NHS. There are also strong links with the Department of Social Medicine.

SPECIAL CARE DENTISTRY
A full range of Specialist led services in Special Care Dentistry are provided by the Trust for
patients resident within Avon and the South West. These services are mainly based at Bristol
Dental Hospital with outreach clinics provided through the Salaried Dental Service. Practitioners
within Special Care Dentistry contribute to a number of multi-disciplinary, primary, secondary
and tertiary referral clinics managing patients with many varied Special Care problems
including:Medically compromised patients,
Immunosuppressed patients,
Bone marrow transplant patients,
General Oncology and Head and Neck malignancy patients,
Patients with learning difficulties,
Patients with dental anxiety and dental phobias
The clinical care and teaching within Special Care Dentistry is integrated primarily between the
medically compromised patient treatment unit at BDH and Avon Salaried Dental Service. A brief
description of each is outlined below; other specialities with high involvement in this area are
oral surgery and restorative dentistry.
Medically compromised patient treatment unit
Patients are referred for assessment and treatment to this unit by other medical & dental
practitioners for patients with complex medical problems whose dental management requires
treatment in a specialised hospital setting.
Patients are also seen following requests from other medical specialists within University
Hospitals Bristol Trust for Oral screening prior to the treatment with High Dose Chemotherapy,
Bone Marrow Transplantation, Head & Neck Oncology screening prior to Chemo-Radiotherapy
or Surgery, Patients with Hereditary or Acquired Coagulopathies, Patients with acquired
immunosuppression, Pre-organ transplant screening, Many other patients with more complex
medical problems requiring dental management. Patients with behavioural or learning
difficulties are also assessed on clinics prior to treatment planning.

The post-holder will be invited to attend and contribute to the regular oral medicine speciality
meetings where issues relating to teaching and clinical service are raised.
Avon Salaried Dental Service
Avon Salaried Dental Service is part of Dental Services, UH Bristol. It provides dental treatment
for priority groups who cannot obtain treatment through the General Dental Service. These
include patients whose medical, mental, physical or behavioural conditions that make routine
dental care difficult or complicated. A high level of emphasis is placed on domiciliary care.
Avon salaried Dental Service also provides a safety net service for socially disadvantaged
children in areas where there is no treatment provision through the General Dental Service. It
undertakes dental screening and epidemiological surveys and oral health promotion for a
population of approximately 800,000. Treatment facilities are provided within the Dental
Hospital, and at nine clinics and health centres in Bristol, Weston-Super-Mare and the
surrounding areas of North Somerset and South Gloucestershire. There is an ongoing
programme of refurbishment to develop and update community dental surgeries
ADDITIONAL POST DETAILS
The clinical training programme follows the curriculum recommended by the SAC in Special
Care Dentistry. Training is geared towards fulfilment of the GDC requirements for a certificate
of Completion of Specialist Training (CCST) in Special Care Dentistry and the trainee will be
allocated a National Training Number.

The timetable for the StR will be tailored to maximise their exposure to all the domains within
the national curriculum for SCD and to enhance a successful entry for the Membership
examination. The trainee will be exposed to a wide variation of clinical situations and patient
management scenarios, including the provision of treatment under inhalational or conscious
sedation plus Day Case General Anaesthesia.

During their training the StR will be expected to supervise the dental undergraduates and to
provide selected teaching for both dental undergraduate students and postgraduate dentists /
doctors as part of their specialist training in specific aspects of SCD.
The StR will be expected to carry out clinical audit and encouraged to participate in formal
research.
There is at present no formal continuing placement outside of University Hospitals Bristol NHS
Foundation Trust arena, however through the PCDS, satellite clinics are attended on a weekly
basis under the supervision of the Clinical Director, Petrina Wood. The training programme is
intending to link with the salaried services in North Devon with the potential of providing short
term rotations involving Exeter & Barnstaple community based clinics during years 2 & 3 of
training. There is the possibility that these rotations may be extended to include the
Community services in Gloucester and Somerset.

Facilities and support
The trainee will have dedicated desk space within Bristol Dental School. There are extensive
dental and medical libraries available to the trainee within the University. The post will have IT
infrastructure and access to secretarial support.
Main Conditions of service
1.
The full time appointment will commence as soon as possible following successful
interview. Any candidate who is unable, for personal reasons, to work full-time will be
eligible to be considered for training flexibly in post.
2.
The post is covered by the Terms and Conditions of Service of Hospital Medical and
Dental Staff and terms of appointment are as for NHS Speciality Registrar grade.
Appointee must meet requirements of Trust employer, i.e. Enhanced CRB disclosure,
Occupational Health requirements etc.
3.
The salary will be in the StR salary depending on age, qualifications and experience of
the person appointed.

The StR will hold his/her appointment with Dental Services (UH Bristol) and for day-today duties he/she will be responsible to the appropriate Clinical Supervisor and
ultimately to Mr Tony Brooke, Training Programme Director, Special Care Dentistry.
5.
The StR will be entitled to 30 days annual plus an allocation of study leave per annum.
Formal training provided within the training programme will be counted as part of the
study leave. Funding for study leave will be in accordance with current Deanery
guidelines and funding.
6.
HONORARY CONTRACT
It is expected that the University of Bristol will offer an honorary contract for the
duration of the post.

CONDITIONS OF APPOINTMENT
The passing of a medical examination is a condition of appointment of all practitioners within
the scope of the National Health Service Superannuation Scheme.

The successful applicant will be required to provide documentary evidence of natural or
acquired immunity to hepatitis B. Where this is not possible, the post holder will be required
to demonstrate by recent (within the last year) evidence of serology showing the absence of
hepatitis B antigen. These provisions are to meet the requirements of the Department of
Health's instruction to Trusts (HSG(93)40).
PROTECTION OF CHILDREN
Disclosure of Criminal Background of those with access to Children
The person appointed to this post may have substantial access to children as defined in Joint
Circular No HC(88)9, HOC8/88 and WHC(88)10. Applicants are, therefore, advised that
shortlisted candidates will be asked to complete a form disclosing any convictions, bind-over
orders or cautions, and to give permission in writing for a police check to be carried out.
Refusal to do so could prevent further consideration of the application. Attention is drawn to
the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) (Amendment) Order 1986 which allow
convictions that are spent to be disclosed for this purpose by the police and to be taken into
account in deciding whether to engage an applicant.
Candidates are assured that the completed form will be treated with strict confidentiality and
will not be disclosed to the Appointments Advisory Committee until the successful
candidate has been selected. A police check will only be requested in respect of the
candidate recommended for appointment. All forms completed and returned by other
candidates will be destroyed when the final selection of the candidate to be recommended
for appointment has been made.

Arrangements for allocation of annual leave
In accordance with the Terms and Conditions of Service, leave arrangements are outlined
below.
All annual leave must be approved in writing by the Supervising Consultants and applied for
at least SIX weeks in advance of commencement of leave.

APPLICATIONS for leave
Application forms should be completed well in advance. Once countersigned by your
Consultant recommending that the leave be agreed subject to necessary arrangements being
made to cover the absence they should be forwarded to the Dental Hospital Office who coordinate the leave.
STUDY LEAVE
Specialty registrars may apply for up to 15 days per year (or 7.5 days in 6 months posts) to
attend recognised courses and conferences with reasonable expenses payable.
