#RevealConceal #DatgeluCelu
Cardiff has a strong reputation for delivering
world-class events and festivals, and Cardiff
Contemporary is no exception. This year sees
the third and most extensive festival, with
thirty specially commissioned projects and
three residencies alongside gallery exhibitions
and four festivals. The theme for Cardiff
Contemporary 2014 is Reveal/Conceal. The
festival takes art into the city’s arts centres,
galleries, museums and iconic spaces, but also
uses hidden or unknown sites, revealing the
city in fascinating and intriguing ways. Cardiff
Contemporary makes use of the entire city as a
space to experience art – from Central Station
to the pages of South Wales Echo, you may find
art anywhere. Artists have re-imagined the city
through art and unveiled places in ways that are
innovative, vibrant, beguiling and challenging.
Cardiff Contemporary season also
brings together many cultural festivals and
organisations that have already made Cardiff
their home, including the artists’ moving image
festival Outcasting: Fourth Wall, Swn music
festival, Experimentica festival for live art and
performance, the international Artes Mundi
prize, and the hyper-local festival madeinroath.
To develop and coordinate a festival like
Cardiff Contemporary takes a huge amount of
effort and dedication, and its continued success
is due to the combined working of many
individuals, organisations and groups, who are
listed later in this guide. As a Cardiff Council
Initiative, with generous support from the Arts
Council of Wales, The City of Cardiff Council is
acknowledging visual culture as an important
part of the city experience for Cardiff’s visitors,
residents and businesses.
At its very best a festival can be an artistic
occupation of the city and reclamation of the
streets for the people. We hope that your
imagination will be liberated by your experiences
during the festival. So, arm yourself with this
guide and an open mind, and enjoy Cardiff
Contemporary 2014!

Mae gan Gaerdydd enw da am gynnal

Celu. Aiff yr w

orielau, amgueddfeydd a mannau eiconig y
ddinas, gan hefyd ddefnyddio safleoedd cudd neu
anhysbys, gan ddatgelu’r ddinas mewn ffyrdd difyr
a diddorol. Mae Caerdydd Gyfoes yn defnyddio’r
ddinas gyfan fel lle i brofi celf – o’r Orsaf Ganolog
i dudalennau’r South Wales Echo, bydd celf
ymhobman. Mae artistiaid wedi ail-ddychmygu’r
ddinas drwy gelf a datgelu llefydd mewn ffyrdd
arloesol, bywiog, difyr a heriol.
Hefyd, daw tymor Caerdydd Gyfoes â
nifer o wyliau a sefydliadau diwylliannol yng
Nghaerdydd at ei gilydd, gan gynnwys yr w

gerddoriaeth Sw
ˆ n, gw
ˆ yl celf a pherfformiadau
byw Experimentica, gwobr ryngwladol Artes
Mundi, a’r w
ˆ yl hyper leol madeinroath.
Mae angen ymdrech ac ymrwymiad enfawr
i gydlynu gw
ˆ yl fel Caerdydd Gyfoes, ac mae ei
llwyddiant parhaus yn deillio o waith cyfunol cynifer
o unigolion, sefydliadau a grwpiau, sydd wedi’u
rhestru’n nes ymlaen yn y canllaw hwn. Fel un
o Fentrau Cyngor Caerdydd, a gaiff gefnogaeth
hael gan Gyngor Celfyddydau Cymru, mae Cyngor
Dinas Caerdydd yn cydnabod diwylliant gweledol
fel rhan bwysig o’r profiad a gaiff trigolion,
busnesau ac ymwelwyr Caerdydd.
Ar ei gorau, gall gw
ˆ yl fod yn alwedigaeth
artistig i’r ddinas gan adhawlio’r strydoedd i’r
bobl. Gobeithio y caiff eich dychymyg ei godi i’r
entrychion gan eich profiadau dros yr w

Felly, gyda’r canllaw hwn a meddwl agored,
mwynhewch Caerdydd Gyfoes 2014!

the Miners’ Institutes that once stood at the centre of almost
every large mining community in South Wales. The ‘Stute is our

events, activities and projects, including Making Conversation
on Tuesday evenings between 6:30pm and 9pm, and Warp’s
Saturday morning Breakfast Club, between 9:30am and 11am.

g39 is delighted to be working with artist and designer Alex
Rich on a series of interventions throughout the city that
loosely take their inspiration from the maritime experience
and legacy that international trading has given to Cardiff.
Sometimes iconic, other times whimsical, these interventions
allow us to experience the city in new ways as sites for activity.
Mae’n bleser gan g39 weithio gyda’r artist a’r dylunydd
Alex Rich ar gyfres o ymyriadau ledled y ddinas sydd wedi’u
hysbrydoli i raddau gan brofiad a threftadaeth forol masnachu

mewn ffyrdd newydd, fel safleoedd i gynnal gweithgareddau.

Ffotogallery presents Bedazzled, a celebration of the special

the 1950s world of bohemian New York where Dylan Thomas’
charisma and dramatic and lyrical use of language left all
around him spellbound.

For Occupation, good cop bad cop ask us to imagine Cardiff
as a vast film set – a city populated by extras and filmed by
hundreds, thousands of cameras – surveillance, security,
mobile phones and the film and TV industry. The back-story
of this film is of a city under siege, and the protagonists of
Occupation are not the main characters, but the Extras
whose task it is to blend in to the background for purposes
of authenticity.
Ar gyfer Occupation, mae good cop bad cop yn gofyn i ni
ddychmygu Caerdydd fel set ffilmiau fawr – dinas yn llawn
ecstras sy’n cael ei ffilmio gan gannoedd, miloedd o gamerâu –
goruchwyliaeth, diogelwch, ffonau symudol a’r diwydiant ffilm

Watermark is a city centre intervention drawing attention to
Cardiff’s historic canal system. In the Nineteenth century, canals
and feeder canals ran through Cardiff, carrying iron, steel and coal
to the docks from the valleys. Today, Cardiff’s canal system still
runs silently beneath city centre pavements. Johana has redrawn
part of the route of the Glamorganshire canal onto the pavement
using pressurised water.
Mae Project Empty Walls yn dod â thros 20 o artistiaid stryd
lleol a rhyngwladol ynghyd i greu oriel awyr agored o furluniau
gwerin yng nghanol dinas Caerdydd a’r cyffiniau.
Wedi’i guradu gan Sam Worthington a Helen Bur, aelodau
o’r gydweithfa gelfyddydol Modern Alchemists.
Mae Watermark yn ymyriad yng nghanol y ddinas sy’n tynnu sylw
at system gamlesi hanesyddol Caerdydd. Yn y bedwaredd ganrif ar
bymtheg, roedd camlesi a chamlesi cyflenwi yn llifo drwy Gaerdydd
gan gludo haearn, dur a glo i’r dociau o’r cymoedd. Heddiw, mae
system gamlesi Caerdydd yn llifo’n dawel dan balmentydd canol y
ddinas. Mae Johana wedi ail-greu rhan o lwybr Camlas Morgannwg

Artists Ian Watson, Simon Fenoulhet and Daniele
Sambo have been commissioned as Artists in
Residence for Cardiff Contemporary 2014 to develop
artworks in response to the theme of Reveal/
Conceal and explore the forgotten spaces, places
and stories of Cardiff.
Ian Watson is investigating local urban legends and half
remembered stories to create a parallel future within the city.
Cardiff’s familiar architecture and highways have become
subsumed by nature, governed by the asbestos Tarantula and
the monkey jockey who once rode a dog through the streets,
freed by a circus flooding. Once mysterious visitors, these
animals now thrive in the city, free of human intervention
and control.
Mae Ian Watson yn ymchwilio i ‘chwedlau trefol’ a straeon lled
angof i greu dyfodol cyfochrog yn y ddinas. Mae pensaernïaeth
a phriffyrdd cyfarwydd Caerdydd wedi’u llyncu gan natur; cânt
wedi eu llywodraethu gan y Tarantiwla asbestos a’r joci mwnci a
reidiodd gi drwy’r strydoedd, ar ôl dianc o’r syrcas ar ôl llifogydd.
Unwaith yn ymwelwyr dirgel, mae’r anifeiliaid hyn bellach yn
ffynnu yn y ddinas, yn rhydd rhag pobl a rheolaeth.

Cardiff based artist Simon Fenoulhet is going underneath the
city of Cardiff to find out what lies beneath our streets, exploring
tunnels, basements, cellars, caverns, crypts, night clubs and
bunkers. Through this process Simon will create an alternative
map of the city, linked to markers above ground for people on the
streets to discover what lies beneath their feet.
Venetian artist Daniele Sambo is collaborating with residents
and small businesses to explore and reclaim the city’s unused
and forgotten urban spaces. Under the cover of darkness,
Daniele will re-imagine the city by creating temporary light

As the official launch of the Cardiff Contemporary
festival, g39 is pleased to present UDO, a
substantial new body of work by Carwyn Evans. Carwyn’s sculptural work has resulted from
the overlaying of two contrasting cultures – that
of agriculture and high-couture. Translating from
Welsh as ‘howl’, udo is an animal cry, a verb, an
action of direct expression. Expect a contrasting
landscape of earth, smell, perfume, decadence,
dread, desire and disgust.

Experimentica hosts a dynamic programme of live
art, performance and interdisciplinary projects
and offers a significant platform for UK and
international artists to produce or introduce their
work. This year’s festival takes its title from the 2009
science fiction thriller ‘District 9’ (directed by Neill
Blomkamp), a multi-layered allegory that explores
our attitudes to outsiders. The title is not a theme
but rather a starting point in which participants
can explore how we co-exist.
Students from the Welsh School of Architecture
have designed and constructed installations
throughout the city centre to explore the ways
in which the perceptions, emotions and behaviour
of people – the general public - are influenced by

Ffotogallery
g39
Chapter is an ambitious, multi-artform cultural
space based in Cardiff that presents and produces
international art, performance and film alongside
a dynamic social space. One of Europe’s largest
and most ambitious arts centres, it is a distinct
and different meeting place for independent film,
performance, art & ideas.
Chapter Gallery is an international arts
space that commissions, produces and presents
contemporary visual and live art projects, offering an
ambitious, challenging and wide-ranging programme
of exhibitions, residencies, commissions and events
by established Welsh and international artists.
Established in 1978, Ffotogallery is the national
development agency for photography and lens-based
media in Wales. Their view is outward looking, with an
exhibition programme featuring artists from Wales
and the rest of the world. Ffotogallery seeks to widen
its impact and influence through touring exhibitions,
collaborations with other organisations and galleries,
print and online publishing and an extensive education
and outreach programme. Ffotogallery has an
active policy of commissioning new work which,
in particular, provides a vital support system to
photographers in Wales, forms an ongoing record
of culture in Wales, and reflects prevailing attitudes
and developments in photography more generally.
g39 is a leading artist led organisation. It runs an
exhibition space, fosters a community of artists
and offers resources. It is now in a factory building
offering more space and better access where you
can see a wide-ranging programme, from major
exhibitions and formal symposia to experimental
projects and intimate events.
g39 also runs Wales Artist Resource
Programme, offering artists an open access
resource, training space and community. Warp
offers a support network for artists via one-toone and group sessions, seminars, workshops,
talks, trips and social events. Since 2008 Warp
has supported the careers of hundreds of artists.
Warp is a big part of how g39 communicates with
artists in Wales.

Goat Major Associates
Outcasting: Fourth Wall
EMP Projects
Artes Mundi
Co-founded by Richard Higlett and Emma Price as
an experimental project space in Canton, Cardiff,
Goat Major Associates started with a programme of
exhibitions and off site activity supporting emerging
artists and curators. GMA sees its role as a facilitator
of creativity more than presenter of activity. While
still Cardiff based it is looking at associations with
international organisations which question the nature
and methods for presenting Contemporary Art as part
of the everyday experience.
Outcasting: Fourth Wall (O:4W) is the first artists’
moving image festival for Cardiff, Wales. O:4W
aims to take artists’ moving image to a wider public
through a number of different platforms, venues
and opportunities both virtual and physical using
traditional screenings, installations and site
specific commissions.
EMP Projects and associates are an independent
curating and commissioning agency. Each project,
commission or research activity is based on a
collective and gathering of visionary associates for
specific projects. They work on the inception and
brokering of commissions with artists’, architects,
creative practitioners and communities to transform
public spaces. EMP Projects are passionate
advocates of socially engaged art in the public realm
and the evolving appreciation of art and creativity
being part of the everyday experience of all.
Artes Mundi is an internationally focused arts
organisation that identifies, recognises and supports
contemporary visual artists who engage with the
human condition, social reality and lived experience.
Artes Mundi is Latin for ‘arts of the world’,
reflecting the international focus of this Wales-based
arts charity whose mission is “To present a landmark
programme of international, contemporary visual
art that will enrich the cultural and educational life
of Wales and its people, develop and inspire new
audiences and build cultural bridges between Wales
and the wider world”.
Artes Mundi is best known for its biennial
international Exhibition and Prize. The exhibition
is Wales’ biggest and most exciting contemporary
visual art show. One of the shortlisted artists is
awarded the prize of £40,000, the largest art prize
in the UK and one of the most significant in the world.
Wedi’i gydsefydlu gan Richard Higlett ac Emma Price
fel man project arbrofol yn Nhreganna, Caerdydd,
dechreuodd Goat Major Associates gyda rhaglen o
arddangosiadau a gweithgareddau oddi ar y safle yn
cefnogi artistiaid a churaduron sy’n dod i’r amlwg.
Yn 2012, ar gyfer Caerdydd Gyfoes, cyflwynwyd The
Witching Hour, sioe arolwg o artistiaid o Gymru yn
gweithio gyda sw
ˆ n. Fel gyda Free Mountain, roedd y
gofod yn llwyfan i syniadau ac ystyria’r GMA mai ei rôl
yw hwyluso creadigrwydd yn hytrach na chyflwyno
gweithgareddau. Gan aros yng Nghaerdydd, mae dal
yn edrych ar gysylltiadau â sefydliadau rhyngwladol
sy’n cwestiynu natur a dulliau cyflwyno Celf Gyfoes
fel rhan o’r profiad bob dydd. Daw Free Mountain â’r
artist/curadur Paul Emmanuel i mewn i’r gwaith fel
aelod cyswllt a chyd-guradur gyda Richard Higlett.
Outcasting: Fourth Wall (O:4W) yw’r w
ˆ yl delweddau
symudol gan artistiaid gyntaf erioed i’w chynnal
yng Nghaerdydd. Nod O:4W yw cyflwyno delweddau
symudol artistiaid i’r cyhoedd drwy nifer o wahanol
lwyfannau, lleoliadau a chyfleoedd, yn rhithwir ac
yn ffisegol, gan ddefnyddio sgriniadau traddodiadol,
gosodiadau a chomisiynau safleoedd penodol.
www.outcasting.org
Asiantaeth curadu a chomisiynu annibynnol yw EMP
Projects. Mae’r holl brojectau, comisiynau neu waith
ymchwil yn seiliedig ar ddod ag artistiaid â
gweledigaeth at ei gilydd ar brojectau penodol.
Maent yn gweithio ar gychwyn a broceru comisiynau
ag artistiaid, penseiri, ymarferwyr creadigol a
chymunedau i weddnewid mannau cyhoeddus. Mae
EMP Projects yn frwd dros gelf sy’n cynnwys pobl
mewn llefydd cyhoeddus, a gwerthfawrogi celf a
chreadigrwydd fel rhan o brofiad bob dydd pawb.
Drwy ein hamryw raglenni a dulliau gweithio ceisiwn
adfywio mannau cyhoeddus a chefnogi ac ysbrydoli
cymunedau lleol drwy’r celfyddydau.
www.empprojects.com
www.goatmajorprojects.com
Mae Artes Mundi yn sefydliad celfyddydau
rhyngwladol sy’n nodi, cydnabod ac yn cefnogi
artistiaid gweledol cyfoes sy’n ymgysylltu â’r
cyflwr dynol, realiti cymdeithasol a’n profiadau.
Term Lladin am ‘gelf y byd’ yw Artes Mundi,
sy’n adlewyrchu ffocws rhyngwladol yr elusen o
Gymru. Y nod yw “cyflwyno rhaglen flaengar o
gelf weledol ryngwladol, gyfoes a fydd yn cyfoethogi
bywyd diwylliannol ac addysgiadol Cymru a’i phobl,
yn datblygu ac yn ysbrydoli cynulleidfaoedd newydd
ac yn adeiladu pontydd diwylliannol rhwng Cymru
a’r byd.”
Fe’i sefydlwyd yn 2002 gan yr artist o Gymru
William Wilkins. Mae Artes Mundi’n fwyaf adnabyddus
am ei Arddangosfa a’i Wobr ryngwladol a gynhelir yng
Nghaerdydd bob yn ail flwyddyn. Hon yw arddangosfa
celf weledol gyfoes fwyaf a mwyaf cyffrous Cymru.
Caiff un o’r artistiaid ar y rhestr fer wobr o £40,000,
y wobr gelf fwyaf yn y DU, ac un o rai mwyaf y byd.
