EUROPEAN COMMISSION JOINT RESEARCH CENTRE Resources Recruitment and Training Project sheet reference number 2014-GEE-D-000-3956 Research Project "Occurrence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in cereal products" Position for: Short description of activity: Trainee (Type II) The Standards for Food Bioscience Unit of the Institute for Reference Materials and Measurement Joint Research Centre in Geel, Belgium, is offering a position for a trainee in the EU reference laboratory for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Exposure of humans to PAHs occurs via air, water, soil, and sediments, but mostly by intake of food. Most of the methods applied in routine for checking compliance of food target products high in fat content (e.g. fats and oils, smoked meat and fish, etc). However, the performance of these methods is not suitable for the generation of reliable occurrence data for food commodities that contain PAHs only at low levels such as cereal products. Depending on the consumption volumes, such food commodities might significantly contribute to exposure. The aim of the project is to monitor the occurrence of the EU marker PAHs in cereal products at levels of about 0.1 µg/kg. The determination of the PAHs will be performed by an optimised gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) based method, which will be applied to foods samples across the EU Member States. Procedure of selection: After the closure of the call, a pre-screening of the applicants will be carried out by JRC according to the eligibility criteria set by the JRC. The results of the pre-selection will be communicated to the concerned candidates. Qualifications: The candidate shall have a degree in chemistry or related discipline and have some experience (min. 1 year) in organic trace analysis. 2 Knowledge in using GC/MS is and statistical data interpretation are an asset. A good command of the English language (B2 level) is required. The applicant will be trained on a state-of-the art GC-MS instrument and the sample preparation devices (pressurised liquid extraction, solid-phase extraction, etc) available at IRMM and asked to perform the experiments on the basis of a learning by doing training.
