powerful Simplicity 216 Architect Vincent Van Duysen knows that simplicity can be boring because he experienced all the hype of minimalism in the ’90s. But he was never really a part of it. The young Van Duysen worked for a while for Milanese designers, and then built up his international career at Antwerp. He had his breakthrough about the same time as the renowned Antwerp fashion designers. In the meantime he has had projects all over the world. His trips to other countries have enhanced his feeling for proportions and noble materials. He occupies an old Antwerp town house, the structure of which he has transformed to enhance the views, the circulation and the natural lighting. The garden, designed by landscape architect Paul Deroose, with bluestone pavements, is also characterised by exceptional balance. This purity of style is to be found in every detail of the interior, from a simple door handle to the entire kitchen or the library. Van Duysen also likes local materials such as white Delft tiles and Belgian linen. The interior is something like a still life from the Golden Century, but then painted with the colours of Morandi. The mix of contemporary art with a few items of antique furniture and some ethnic art, causes the residence to transcend any certain trend, and yet it is completely contemporary. KRACHTIGE EENVOUD Eenvoud kan best saai zijn, weet architect Vincent Van Duysen, omdat hij de hele hype van het minimalisme in de jaren negentig heeft meegemaakt. Maar hij maakte daar nooit echt deel van uit. De jonge Van Duysen werkte een tijd bij Milanese designers en bouwde daarna zijn internationale carrière vanuit Antwerpen uit. Hij brak ongeveer gelijktijdig door met de vermaarde Antwerpse modeontwerpers. Ondertussen heeft hij wereldwijd projecten lopen. Zijn tochten naar het buitenland hebben zijn gevoel voor proporties en nobele materialen versterkt. Hij betrekt een oud Antwerps herenhuis waarvan hij de indeling heel grondig structureel verbouwd heeft omwille van de doorzichten, de circulatie en de lichtinval. Ook de door landschapsontwerper Paul Deroose ontworpen tuin met vloeren van blauwe hardsteen is bijzonder evenwichtig getekend. Deze zuiverheid van stijl schuilt in alle details van het interieur, van een simpele deurklink tot de gehele keuken of de bibliotheek. Van Duysen houdt ook van lokale 217 materialen, zoals witte Delftse tegels en Belgisch linnen. Het interieur heeft iets van een stilleven uit de Gouden Eeuw, maar dan geschilderd met de kleuren van Morandi. Ook de mix van hedendaagse kunst met enkele antieke meubels en wat etnische kunst, zorgt ervoor dat de woning ontsnapt aan elke trend en toch helemaal van onze tijd is. LA FORCE DE LA SIMPLICITÉ La simplicité est parfois très ennuyeuse, admet l’architecte Vincent Van Duysen, qui a vécu la vague minimaliste des années 1990 sans jamais y adhérer. À ses débuts, il a travaillé pendant un temps chez des designers milanais, puis s'est lancé dans une carrière internationale à partir d’Anvers. Sa percée a eu lieu plus ou moins en même temps que celle des célèbres créateurs de mode de la métropole. Aujourd’hui, il gère des projets partout dans le monde. Ses voyages ont renforcé son sens des proportions et son goût des matériaux nobles. Vincent Van Duysen habite une ancienne maison de maître anversoise dont il a transformé la structure pour favoriser les perspectives, la circulation et la lumière. Le jardin créé par l’architecte paysager Paul Deroose, avec ses sols en pierre de taille, a été conçu de manière très équilibrée. Cette pureté de style s’applique à la décoration intérieure, des poignées de porte au mobilier de cuisine en passant par la bibliothèque. Van Duysen aime aussi les matériaux locaux, comme les carreaux de Delft et le lin belge. L’intérieur rappelle le style de vie du Siècle d’or, mais repeint dans les couleurs de Morandi. Avec son mélange d’art contemporain, de quelques meubles anciens et de pièces ethniques, la maison échappe à toute tendance précise tout en étant clairement inscrite dans son temps. This is the large living area next to the garden. Noticeable are the wooden easy chairs that were designed for Chandigarh by Pierre Jeanneret, the nephew of Le Corbusier. Dit is de grote leefruimte aan de tuinzijde. Hier vallen onder meer de houten easy chairs op die Pierre Jeanneret, de neef van Le Corbusier, destijds ontwierp voor Chandigarh. Ceci est le grand espace de vie qui donne sur le jardin. On y remarque notamment les Easychairs que Pierre Jeanneret, cousin du Corbusier, dessina autrefois pour Chandigarh. Architect Vincent Van Duysen has thoroughly rebuilt this nineteenth-century building to optimise both the traﬃc ﬂow and the feeling of space. From the outside you notice little of this, but inside this results in splendid perspectives. The designer has a feeling for soft light that he allows to enter everywhere little by little. Shadow also plays a prominent role. On the left, the decorative line of the stairs and the kitchen with white Delft tiles on the wall, and a ﬂoor of bluestone from Henegouwen. Van buiten merk je daar weinig van, maar binnen ontstaan daardoor schitterende dieptezichten. De ontwerper heeft een gevoel voor teder licht, dat hij overal gedoseerd binnenlaat. Uiteraard speelt ook de schaduw een grote rol. Links de sierlijke lijn van de trap en de keuken met witte Delftse tegels op de wand en de vloer van blauwe hardsteen uit Henegouwen. Vincent Van Duysen has discovered this kind of powerful simplicity and purity in Mediterranean houses. The incidence of light also plays a crucial role. Vincent Van Duysen heeft dit soort krachtige eenvoud en puurheid ontdekt in mediterrane huizen. Ook hier speelt de lichtinval een cruciale rol. De hoge vensters zorgen voor een diﬀuus licht en schenken de ruimte monumentaliteit. La salle à manger évoque par sa robuste table et ses bancs tout simples l’atmosphère d’un réfectoire de couvent. Vincent Van Duysen a découvert la force de la simplicité et de l’authenticité dans les maisons méditerranéennes. La luminosité est essentielle une fois encore. Les hautes fenêtres créent une lumière diﬀuse et confèrent de la monumentalité à l’espace.
