The Aerospace Technology Institute
Overview
An independent institute established as a collaboration between
Government and Industry to lead and challenge the UK’s Aerospace
technology strategy and through £2.1 billion of secured R&D
investment maintain and grow the UK’s competitive position.
Vision
Sustaining and growing an internationally competitive Aerospace
sector in the UK through investment in technologies consistent with
commercial aircraft updates, new aircraft and the sector’s strengths.

The Institute’s goals

• Private company limited by guarantee; non-profit distributing
• Independent Board made up of:

– Non executive large company members- 4 positions

– BIS representative- Huw Walters
– TSB representative- Simon Edmonds
– EPSRC representative- Philip Nelson
• £2.1Bn commitment across 7-year from the UK Government & Industry
– 50% provided by Government (BIS) and 50% collected from Industry

The Institute’s investment approach
• Technologies, facilities and skills development consistent with the UK Aerospace
vision & strategy, in particular:
• Critical aerospace technologies
• Those already with strong UK capabilities
• Those with substantial economic impact
• A range of support and investment in:
• Small scale, open call collaborative research projects
• Complex umbrella programmes
• Large-scale demonstrators, which could combine and integrate the results of
smaller projects and take them to a higher level of maturity
• Plus the alignment of investments in:
• Physical & educational facilities

• Competition call expected value £25M in ATI funding (industry matched)
• Timing:
– Call to open 20th October 2014
– Competition to close 28th January 2015
• Focused on:
– Medium/smaller companies
– Lower TRL technologies (TRL3-5/6)
– Project duration up to 36 months
– Projects of circa £2-4M (Grant £1-2M)
