The 2014-2015 Varsity
Cheerleading Squad has been
selected, along with the new Mrs.
Bulldog.
Mrs. Bulldog, Madison
Marrow states, “I am thrilled to be
the new Mrs. Bulldog. I enjoy
being around kids and influencing
them in a positive way. I am
grateful to have the opportunity to
be around such an amazing and
fun group of girls.”
Several girls tried out for the
new team, and eleven of the girls
were selected for next year’s
Varsity squad.
Senior squad members are:
Ashtin Colson, Cierra Golden,
Kristen Kendrix, Caroline Quam,
Lana Spandley, Shyanne Tate, and
your new Mrs. Bulldog Madison
Marrow.
Other varsity members are
Addy Hughes, Abby Tucker,
jjjjjjjjjj
Jewel Wilmany, Kinsey Wilmes,
and Sarah Robinson.
Senior
Caroline
Quam
states, “I am so excited for this
year. I think we have a great group
of girls on the squad, and I am
eager to cheer with them and show
them the importance of making it
to State.”
Nine eighth grade girls were
also chosen for the freshmen
squad at AHS. These girls include:
Chloe Cox, Kyleigh Savis,
Annalisa Harrell, Jaycee Herring,
Summer Locon, Kinsley Moore,
Jayden Nolan, Lindsey Sellers,
and Lily Draper.
To prepare for their tryouts
these dedicated students attended a
week of clinics to learn a dance,
make up a unique cheer, and work
on jumps and tumbling.
Each
fall,
our
AHS
cheerleaders compete in the
Regiona
Regional and State competitions.
They always work hard to
represent our school. During the
summer the girls attend a weeklong camp at OU. At the camp the
girls learn all their routines and
dances for the season.
Unlike
most
sports,
cheerleading is a sport that lasts all
year. Even though the girls aren’t
out on the football field or
basketball court year round, they
continue to work hard to prepare
for the next season.
The
cheerleaders
are
coached
by
former
AHS
cheerleader Candace McMahan.
This is her first full year as the
head coach, and she is ready for
another great year with the girls.
Watch for all the big things
that will happen this year with
your new 2014-2015 AHS
cheerleaders.

Meghan Brown
Meghan Brown grew up
in Altus, Ok. She lives with
her parents, Matt and Mel
Brown; her little brother,
Miles, who is in the second
grade at Sunset; and her older
brother, Matt, who graduated
from AHS last year. She also
has three dogs, Sydney,
Roscoe, and Hazel.
“My
parents
and
brothers are my biggest
supporters,” states Meghan.
Meghan is a freshman
here at AHS, and her favorite
thing about the high school is
everyone’s school spirit.
In Meghan’s free time
she enjoys playing tennis,
being with friends, watching
reruns of America’s Next Top
Model, and having midnight
talks with her brother, Matt.
Meghan says, “I love
being Matt’s sister. He’s
always there to talk to me and
he’s like my best friend. He’s

Osceola County and was
raised in Navarre, Florida.
He has two older sisters,
Victoria and Audra, and one
younger
brother,
Blake.
Victoria is 19 and in the
United States Air Force; Audra
is a 16 year old senior who
attends Altus High School, and
Blake is 3 years old.
Derek lives with his dad,
Chris, and his mom, Cristy.
Both of his parents are
currently in the Air Force.
His
interests
are
wrestling and pole vaulting.
He states, “I like both of
these sports because if you
lose, the only person you can
blame is yourself. The person
who inspires me the most in
wrestling is Cameron Loving,
because he has worked hard to
be where he is. I joined

wrestling because I want to be
the best.”
Derek’s favorite things
about AHS include: being able
to attend the same school as
his sister, participating in the
athletic programs the school
has to offer, and the chicken
crispitos that they sell in the
cafeteria for lunch.
The
fear
of
not
succeeding in life is what
motivates Derek to try his best
each and every day.
Derek plans to attend
Oklahoma State University
after high school even though
he is undecided on what he
wants to major in.
Something
interesting
about Derek that students may
not know is that he knows
karate.
His favorite quote is, “If

Meghan is undecided on
what college she wants to
attend after she graduates, but
she wants to do something in
the medical field where she
can work with children.
A few cool places that
Meghan has been to are NYC,
Delaware, Maryland, and
Gettysburg.
Meghan attends church
at Altus Christian Fellowship.
She says, “Besides my
family, my biggest motivator
is my Lord and Savior, Jesus
Christ.”
Two
of
Meghan’s
favorite Bible verses are
Exodus 14:14, “The Lord will
fight for you: you need only to
be still,” and Deut. 31:6, “Be
strong and courageous. Do not
be afraid or terrified because
of them, for the Lord your God
goes with you."

Mikayla Reuter and

popular Chicken Soup for the

Reece Vadney also

Unfortunately, she will not be

Staff Spotlight: Shane Gregg
Coach Shane Gregg is
the new Head Tennis Coach
here at AHS.
Coach Gregg grew up in
Altus.
He graduated from
Altus High and he played
varsity tennis for the Bulldogs.
Gregg and his brother, Lee
Dustin, were star athletes in
the 1990’s for the Bulldog
Tennis program.
Gregg’s mom and dad
were school teachers for Altus
Public schools for almost 30
years.
His favorite pastime is
spending time with his two
precious children, Tristan and
Emma. They are his greatest
accomplishment.
He says, “We do
everything together, and they
are my #1 priority.”
Coach Gregg enjoys
listening to music, playing
tennis,
watching
movies,
attending concerts, swimming,
and many other hobbies.
He attended college at
Southern Nazarene University.
Coach Gregg’s biggest
win in his career is that he
played and defeated the
National
Champion
from
Drury College at his first
college tournament in 2000.
He was a member of the
1997 State Championship
Tennis Team in the #1 singles.
He was also a 4-time
conference champion and a 4time regional champion in #1
singles.
Something cool that
AHS students may not know
about him is that he has played
tennis all over the nation, and
he is passionate about the sport
of tennis.
He states, “This is my
first year coaching tennis, but
have played tennis for 29 years
and I love coaching it!”
His favorite quote is,
“It’s nice to be important, but
its’ more important to be nice.”
The Collar page 4

Reece expressed her
sadness in saying, “I had a
great time, but I’m sad because
this was my last time to
perform prose.”
The overall excitement
of the students isn’t lessened
any with Chandler Pederson,
who performed a prose piece
by
Weird
Al
called
“Albuquerque.” This is the
longest song written by Weird
Al.
“It’s great to have been
able to go to state, and I’m
overall just very happy with
how we did,” says Chandler.
Juan Monsivais took
home fourth place with his
poetry, and Chandler Pederson
won fifth place with his Weird
Al song performed as a prose
piece.
All students did their
absolute best, and their hard
work and dedication shined
through as they went to State.

have indeed done well.

four
freshmen golfers.
Coach Coffman states,
“Like last year, we have a
young team, but I have faith in
my team that we’ll have a
decent golf season.”
Coach Coffman has faith
in the leadership ability of his
senior
player
stating,
“Allison can hold up a decent
golf game, and she’s a great
leader.”
This year’s state golf

first week of May in Duncan.
In order to make it to the state

The Bulldogs have also
been doing really well this
year. Several of the boys have
set new personal records.
Their team is twice the size it
was last year which has helped
them earn points at meets.
Some of their best
participants are Malik Knight
in the high jump, Cameron

Harris in relays, and Derek
Baumgardner in pole vault.
They are well on their
way to accomplishing their
goal this year to score at least

Ashley Alcorta
Shawna Dale has attended Altus High School since her freshman year. Her favorite
things about AHS include being a clarinet player in That Altus Band, and all the great
teachers.
Shawna is very interested in Business Computer Technology. She enjoys working
with technology and learning new things every day. Shawna attends SWTC where she went
to State for Business Professionals of America (BPA) and won 1 st place in the Integrate
Applications. This accomplishment earned her the opportunity to go to Indianapolis to
compete in Nationals in May.
Shawna states, “It is such an achievement to see all of my hard work pay off. I am
very blessed to have the opportunity to not only place 1 st in State, but also to go and
compete in Nationals.”
After high school Shawna will continue at Western Oklahoma State University and
obtain her associates degree in applied science. Then she will transfer to Oklahoma State
University and major in Psychology and become a Licensed Professional Counselor.
Her parents are Tom and Cindy Bailey. Her mom is a teacher here at AHS, and her
dad is the preacher at Elm and Hudson Church of Christ. She has 5 brothers and sisters, and
10 nieces and nephews. “My family is my motivation. Without them I would not be the
person I am today,” states Shawna.
Senior Antonio Marti has attended Altus High since his freshman year.
Antonio’s interest includes playing soccer, playing his saxophone in the Jazz Band,
and hanging out with his friends and family.
During his time away from school Antonio works at the Black Orchid Flower Shop.
Antonio’s favorite thing about AHS is the fact that a lot of his family attended Altus
High. He loves being able to see his family and friends everyday.
Antonio is inspired by a quote from Pope Paul VI: “All life demands struggle. Those
who have everything given to them become lazy, selfish, and insensitive to the real values
of life. The very striving and hard work we so constantly try to avoid is the major building
block in the person we are today.”
Something unique you may not know about Antonio is that he placed third in the
sparing division in the weight class of 180 as a first degree black belt.
What motivates Antonio in life is his family. He lives with his mother Melba
Martinez and his three brothers, Guillermo Jr. Marti, Jean Carlo Marti, Domingo Marti, and
his sister Jeannia Marti.
After high school Antonio plans to attend Southwest Oklahoma State University in
Weatherford as an Engineer major.
