An Introduction to The Albert Kennedy Trust The Albert Kennedy Trust (AKT) works with young lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans people who have been rejected by their parents, their care giver or are bullied at school for being brave enough to come out and be themselves. AKT provides... Nathan’s story (aged 21) Following two years of problems within my family which culminated in a dispute on New Years Day I was ‘advised’ by social services to accept ‘supported accommodation’. I use the terms loosely as decisions were made without my knowledge, information was misleading at best and fabricated at worst. The support at the hostel was limited due to limited numbers of staff available, especially those who worked in the in the evening, as being a college student I wasn’t available during the day. Even when I was able to interact with staff I found them unhelpful, naïve and unrealistic. In August I became aware of AKT and found their mentoring facility useful. I found it easy to talk to my mentor about the homophobic abuse at the hostel, and how I felt bitter and disconnected with my family sitting idly by as I was placed in a prison-like environment. AKT have seen me through my sad times, and my happy times. They saw me in the hostel and they saw me when I was rescued by the good grace of my ex’s parents. The saw me depressed following the break-up, and saw me bounce back with my own home, achievement at college, and a renewed sense of self-belief. AKT gave me back to myself, and I’d advise any LGBT young person who feels they are alone to contact AKT. They’ve been like the family I always longed for, and their professionalism, bountiful opportunities and support in building confidence and stability is fantastic.
