A Visitor’s Guide To Our Host City, St o r y by Geoff Bilau As IAPMO celebrates 85 years of gathering to further the association’s mission, educate its diverse membership, and advance the Uniform Codes for a world that has changed remarkably since 1930, it seems only fitting that we meet in a city that owes its existence to water — namely its proximity to a source that could be harnessed to power the Industrial Revolution. Minneapolis, the “City of Lakes,” which is situated on both banks of the Mississippi River, is even named for the stuff. As the story goes, the city’s first schoolteacher came up with the name by combining the Dakota Sioux word for water, mni, with the Greek word for city, polis — water city. The “Twin Cities” — Minneapolis, St. Paul and their surrounding communities — make up the 16th largest metropolitan area in the United States, with nearly 3.4 million residents calling the area home. 8 IAPMO’s 85 th Annual Education & Business Conference History Incorporated in 1867, the city of Minneapolis began around 50 years earlier with the establishment of the U.S. Army’s Fort Snelling, which spurred population growth in the area. Flour millers favored the location for its proximity to Saint Anthony Falls, the highest waterfall on the Mississippi River, which powered flour mills and sawmills, making Minneapolis a popular destination for Great Plains grain farmers to ship their harvest for processing. Two of the biggest purveyors of baked goods in the United States — General Mills and Pillsbury — were founded as millers of white flour during this period. By 1900, 14.1 percent of the nation’s grain was milled in Minneapolis. Similarly, steam-powered machinery made the city’s lumber industry at the turn of the century the world’s foremost producer of lumber. When the forests became depleted, Minneapolis suffered economically, forcing many of the milling companies to relocate closer to the farming areas due to the increasing cost of transportation. The city rebounded September 14 – 18, 2014 • minneapolis, Minnesota 9 Minneapolis, Minnesota and reinvented itself after WWII, however, becoming a national leader in the manufacture of everything from farm machinery to computers and electronic equipment. Entertainment and Sightseeing Built into the ruins of what was once the world’s largest flour mill, Mill City Museum is located on the historic Mississippi Riverfront. Visitors can learn in person about the intertwined histories of the flour industry, the river and the city. The Walter Art Center is considered one of the United States’ “big five” museums for modern art, on par with the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Guggenheim in New York. Established as a public art gallery in 1927, the Walker is includes exhibits featuring visual arts, performing arts, film/video, design and new media. Located directly across from the museum is the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden, an 11 acre park featuring 40 permanent art installations and numerous temporary pieces. Built in 1892-93, the Stone Arch Bridge once provided a vital transportation link between the east and west side milling districts. The National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark now features panoramic views of St. Anthony Falls, the west-side milling district and the Minneapolis skyline. Segway tours are given out of St. Anthony Main near Tuggs Tavern. The Mall of America receives more than 40 million visitors each year. Located in nearby Bloomington, the mall features 520 stores, 50 restaurants and numerous other attractions such as Nickelodeon Universe, the nation’s largest indoor theme park, and SEA LIFE Minnesota Aquarium, featuring more than 10,000 aquatic creatures. And there’s no sales tax on clothing or shoes. Minneapolis is home to professional sports franchises in each of the four major U.S. sports — Major League Baseball (Twins), NFL (Vikings), NBA (Timberwolves), NHL (Wild) — as well as a minor league soccer team, Minnesota United, in the North American Soccer League (NASL). The Twins play their home games at Target Field and 10 IAPMO’s 85 th Annual Education & Business Conference Minneapolis, Minnesota will play host to the Detroit Tigers Sept. 15-17 and the Cleveland Indians Sept. 19-21. The Vikings will play their games at the University of Minnesota’s TCF Bank Stadium this season and next while construction of a new stadium takes place on the former site of the Metrodome. Minnesota United plays its games at the National Sports Center in nearby Blaine, Minn. Golf The Twin Cities area features more than 60 golf courses, ranging from 18-hole championship to 9-hole executive courses. The 2014 Roscoe King Memorial Golf Tournament will be played on the 6,359-yard Hillcrest Golf Club of St. Paul. Featuring rolling hills and mature trees, the par-72 course will challenge and satisfy players of every skill level.
