Our Values: Success Respect Fairness ARDROSSAN AREA SCHOOL NEWSLETTER 3 Week 6 Term 2 – Wednesday 4th June 2014 PRINCIPAL’S NEWS On Monday June 2nd the school committed to building positive and respectful relationships between Indigenous and nonIndigenous peoples through the development of our cultural competence. We symbolised this commitment through the raising of the Australian Flag, the Aboriginal Flag and the Torres Strait Islander Flag. These 3 flags now fly over our school as a daily reminder of this commitment. This event could not have been the success that it was without the input and enthusiasm of a number of people. I would like to thank these people for their significant contribution to this event. Please accept my apologies if I inadvertently missed anyone in the following acknowledgements. • Leonie Peterson, our Aboriginal Education Teacher, and Jessica Karpany, the Cluster Aboriginal Community Education Officer for the planning and organisation of this event. • Georgia Stratton, Teagan Loveridge, Madeline Kuhndt, Caitlin Roads, Christina Vigar, Georgia Kuhndt, Leslie Stratton, Jackson Stratton, Brenda Garay, Taliah Tulloch and Leah Rowe and her Dance Crew for their input into the ceremony. • Kathryn Cameron, Gabrielle Herd and Matthew Goodfellow for their leadership in developing the native garden behind the flagpoles. • Hayden Cross, Jake Browning, Wade Abbott, Jeffrey Garay and Bradley Ottey for their hard work in preparing the native garden. • Eric Adams, Chris Moustrides, Tyler Rose-Fildes, Jack Hicks and Matthew Clark for setting up the formal ceremony area on the morning of the event. • Parents and Friends Committee for cooking the BBQ for our shared lunch • Teachers for the work they engaged with leading up to and on the day with their students on a range of Reconciliation activities. • School Support Officers for their input leading up to and on the day 8-9 Netball In my address, I called on all students, staff and friends of the school to walk the talk of reconciliation. The cross-curriculum priority of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures from the Australian Curriculum and the focus on respectful relationships in our pastoral care program are two aspects of our teaching and learning where we can develop further our cultural competence, supporting us to fulfil our commitment. A reminder to all families that our second Student Free Day will occur on Tuesday 10th June. On this day teachers will be focussing on the implementation of the Australian Curriculum with their Southern Yorke Peninsula (SYP) colleagues at Yorketown Area School. Our SSOs will be engaged in a number of training and development activities with their SYP colleagues here at Ardrossan Area School. The school will not be open on this day as a result of this professional development/training. School will recommence on Wednesday 11th June at 8:35am. Regards, Karen Bond Year 8/9 Netball was held Thursday 29th May at the Ardrossan Netball courts. 9 girls from Year 9 played in two games. First against Minlaton which they lost 27-17 and their second game was against Yorketown which they unfortunately lost 28-12. All girls put in a big effort and represented AAS well. Yorketown won the day beating Minlaton in the grand final. This day was also used to select a team to represent Yorke Peninsula in the upcoming SSSSA Knock Competition held later in the term. Congratulations to Georgia Kuhndt for making the team. A n i t P a E S h T e a a r c r a h d e r Reconciliation Week SAASTA SAASTA – Power Cup The South Australian Aboriginal Sports Training Academy (SAASTA) is an initiative of the SA Government's Social Inclusion Unit and is managed by the Department for Education and Children Development. Georgia & Caitlin perform at the Flag Raising Ceremony The Academy caters for students who are committed towards completing their SACE and are interested in health and physical activity. The school curriculum has a focus on health and sporting activities while at the same time aiming to improve the overall level of each student’s literacy and numeracy skills. This will ultimately make each SAASTA graduate competitive in future employment or improve access to tertiary courses at University and TAFE. At Ardrossan Area School we currently have two Senior School students who participate in this program; Georgia Stratton & Christina Vigar. Below is a recount from Christina regarding the Power Cup. On 21st of May Georgia & I travelled to Adelaide as part of our SAASTA course to participate in the 2014 Aboriginal Power Cup. The Power Cup is a 9-a-side football competition played on Alberton Oval. Grand final teams were selected on football skill as well as academic ability and school attendance. The Maitland Area school team was lucky enough to have both the boys and girls squads play in the grand final on Adelaide Oval, Saturday night prior to the Port Adelaide vs Hawthorn game. The boy’s team won their grand final but the girls were unsuccessful. The Power Cup was a rewarding experience that Christina Vigar we will treasure for life.
