February 2015
Words Through Woody
When our daughter, Jenna, was a student at Purdue, we talked often
by telephone. When Mary Jo and I finally broke down and purchased a cell
phone (one of those huge monstrosities plugged into the car) we were able
to talk almost every week and not have to worry about long distance tolls.
Oh, I know we could e-mail each other and we did sometimes. But, there
is nothing sweeter than hearing the wonderful sound of your only
daughter’s voice. And never does the conversation end without her saying,
“I love you, Daddy.” I am so touched by that thought that sometimes I was
uncertain if I told her I loved her. Yes, of course, I know she loves me, but
it always makes me feel so special to hear her say it. It’s like receiving a
valentine every week instead of only once a year.
Not long ago I had my usual talk with God. I praised and thanked God
… confessed my sins … prayed and petitioned for the needs of the
congregation … asked God for guidance in my ministry and the ministry
of our church … and finally said, “Amen.” As I continued in quiet meditation
and listening for God, I realized how precious my Heavenly Father is to
me. I bowed my head, closed my eyes, and said, “I love You, God.”
Thinking back on how happy it makes me to hear Jenna say, “I love, you,
Daddy,” made me wonder how glad God must feel to hear … out loud …
that we love Him.
God says to us, “… obey the commandments of the Lord your God …
by loving your God … then you shall live and God will bless you.”
(Deuteronomy 30:16)
Why don’t you stop right now and send God a Valentine and wait for
the blessing?
Happy Valentine’s Day!
In Christ’s love,

January 2015: STAY HYDRATED
(How are you doing? 8 glasses a day?)
February 2015: MOVE! Think of ways to
increase your movement a little each day. Do
you wear a pedometer? Can you increase your
steps count by 500? 1,000? (Minimum daily steps for health = 10,000 steps)
Some find it harder to exercise in the winter when it’s so cold
outside. What are some creative ways to get us out of the easy
chair, wrapped in a quilt, and up moving around? You are welcome
to walk at the church most days when the office is open and no one
has reserved Fellowship Hall. Give us a call to make arrangements.
You are invited to submit your own favorite tips for staying healthy.
Some will be shared with the church through the newsletter. Or feel free to post
your ideas on the Mohawk UMC Facebook Group.
BABY SHOWER
A Baby Shower is planned to honor Amy Lovins,
Saturday, February 21 at 2 pm, at the church. Everyone is
invited to share this blessing with the Lovins family.
(Registry: Babies R Us and Target) More information from
Diana Hartzog and Tammy Bearhope.
CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS
Some heavy-duty demo work is needed from folks who are able
to move cabinetry and appliances, carpeting, and have access to a truck.
Later there will be finish, cleaning, landscaping, and
painting jobs to do. Our UMC District Offices will be
relocating and there’s work to be done. Please speak
with Pastor Woody or contact the District Office for more
information or to volunteer. (317.924.4140, Robin)
CHURCH NEWS – GREENFIELD DAILY REPORTER
Because of changes in press schedules and deadlines, we now
submit information a week and a half in advance. There may be times the
Holy Spirit prompts a change between the time we submit information and
when that information is published. Who is going to argue with the Spirit?
If you like to prepare for worship by reading the scripture text in advance,
try as we will to have it right, the most accurate source for scripture texts
may be on our Facebook Group page.
Mary Jo and I wish to offer a belated
“Thank You” to our Mohawk family for
the special Christmas cards, gifts,
blessings, and expressions of love
we received this past Christmas.
Thank You often seems an
inadequate way to express our
appreciation for the love you have shown us.
However, “Thank You!” from the bottom of our
hearts. Your graciousness and love for us are
beyond expression. May the New Year bring you even more blessings
from God as we share the love of Christ in the Mohawk community.
Pastor Woody and Mary Jo
Thank you all so much for the calls, cards, visits, etc to Helen Jean.
Thank you for the beautiful blanket sent to the funeral home. The funeral lunch
was delicious and Woody’s service was wonderful. What a blessing the
Mohawk Church family is.
Thank you for your thoughts, prayers, and kindness during this difficult time.
The family of Helen Jean White
Dear Mohawk UMC,
Thank you for the cards, flowers, food, and the nice blanket. We
appreciate all of your thoughts and prayers!
Our family would like to thank you for your kind expressions of
sympathy on our recent loss of Candice Newman.
Shelley & Steve Vail
During a time like this we realize how much our friends really mean
to us. Your expression of sympathy will always be remembered.
I want to thank the congregation for their thoughts and prayers during
our time of mourning. I also want to thank the church for the great luncheon
after the funeral. The meal was comforting and the food was great.
The family of Suzanne Hayes; Derek Hayes
Dear Church Family,
Thank you so much for all the love and support we received at
Suzanne’s passing.
Thank you to the ladies who planned and prepared the delicious
funeral dinner. Also, thank you for all the beautiful cards we have received.
Love, Elaine Cox and Family
Notes of thanks have also arrived from Midwest Mission Distribution Center
for our donation of $1,390 and from Fortville Head Start for the wonderful warm
gloves, mittens, and hats for the students.

SOUPER BOWL OF CARING
February is here and it is time for Souper Bowl of
Caring Sunday on February 1st. After our service, please
look for the soup cans near the entrances. Money collected will go to the food
pantries in Fortville and Greenfield. Bring some spare change, bills or checks
made out to Mohawk UMC with “Souper Bowl” on the memo line.
Last year our Mohawk kids collected $172.54 and nationwide
$8,446,410 in cash and food item donations went to 6,509 food distribution
centers.
HEATING BILL ASSISTANCE
The Genesis Sunday School class voted to keep a
limited amount of money in reserve for providing heating bill
assistance to whoever may need it. Pastor Woody will take the
requests. If you know someone who needs help, or if you do
yourself, please see him. The assistance will go directly to the utility provider.
THINK SPRING!
The winds are blustery and the snow and ice
coming, so what better time to daydream about spring and
summer flowering baskets for our porches and patios?
We will be taking orders for beautiful Tuttle
Orchard’s flowering baskets and planters February 8th
through March 8th. Place your order at the SCRIP table in
Fellowship Hall. Delivery is set for early May with pickup at
the church, just in time for Mother’s Day. This year we are also offering Tuttle’s
gift cards in $10 denominations. The proceeds will go for 2015 mission
projects and a 2016 work mission trip that is on the drawing board.
