Please note that Yearbooks will not be issued to students until their Library books are all in and accounted for. Thank you for your help in ensuring our books are returned. Parents for Road Patrol 2015 We need parent help to assist with road patrol next year. This only necessitates 20-30 minutes a week either before or after school. The students cannot operate the crossings without parent supervision. We need 15-20 parents and so far only have 3. Please email [email protected] . Your assistance in helping to keep our students safe is hugely appreciated. Cixi Elementary School Visit to Parnell- More homestays required for February 2015 In February 2015, 17 students will be visiting from our sister school in Ningbo, China. The students from Cixi Elementary School will arrive on Wednesday, 5th February and depart on the 15th February (10 nights). The students will spend most of their time on pre-organised trips around Auckland as well as a few days at school. While being able to communicate in Mandarin is beneficial it’s certainly not essential as the students are here to enjoy an authentic NZ homestay experience while practising their English. Ideally the students will be billeted in pairs. The students will pay the homestay parents $240 per week, per student. If you are interested in learning more about becoming a homestay family for Parnell School, please email our ESOL teacher Anna Hedstrom – [email protected] with your name, email address and contact phone numbers. Exam reports went home last week reporting children’s achievement along with the average score for their peer group. We set and prepare students for exams for the following reasons 1. To prepare students for the exams they will sit on entry to high school and the systems they will meet in Year 9. 2. To show that regular work, focus, recording and systematic book work enables success. 3. To teach about exam sitting skills. 4. To teach methods for revision. 5. To encourage self- evaluation and goal setting. English and Maths assessments are based on the National Standards and curriculum objectives for Level 4 (expected level for year 7 & 8 students) with 25% of assessments set at Level 5. An achievement of between 50 and 60% reflects achieving the standard for year 7 students and a mark of between 60 and 70 reflects achieving the standard for year 8 students in these subjects. In other subject areas, testing reflects the curriculum covered in classes over 2014. Congratulations to the following students who achieved outstanding results (over 80%) in the following subjects. Waterwise in 2015 The year 7 & 8 students participate in a sailing and water safety course based out of Okahu Bay on a Monday afternoon. In order to facilitate this we need parent assistance. We need both Waterwise trained and enthusiastic hands-on parent supporters in order to run a programme of sailing, kayaking, skills and water safety. We are looking to run training sessions for parents in late January in preparation for the 2015 season. Training as an instructor requires sitting a theory test- sailing and rules of the water, and a practical test which focuses on using a motor boat to coach and provide rescue and safety support for our students. If you are interested in learning more about this please contact [email protected] APPA Music Festival Congratulations to the students who participated at the APPA music festival at the Auckland Town Hall last Tuesday evening. You all represented your families, tutors and the school extremely well, participating and performing in a professional, focused, mature and entertaining manner whether singing, playing ukulele or dancing. This was the culmination of 6 months of training for choir, learning 18 songs. Congratulations to Charels, Ana and Bianca Styles who were selected to sing in small groups.
