Jordan WEEKLY MARKET BRIEF Research Division Amman Stock Exchange (ASE) March 13, 2014 The market’s main indices exchanged places from the week before the past as the services and industrial indices gained and the financial index retreated. The shifting grounds caused the General Index to drop by 0.36% to 2180.39 points. The market’s activity took a step back also and the number of traded shares dropped 20% to 39.9 million as the trading value dropped 14% to JOD35 million. The financial and industrial sectors accounted for most of the decline in the market’s activity. The financial index dropped 0.7% and the insurance index stood as the only gainer in the financial sector. The insurance index, which gained 0.8%, benefited from an 11.36% increase in the price of Jordan International Insurance (JIJC), which was the market’s second best performer after closing at JOD0.49. At the other end, the banking index dropped 0.76%, and the real estate and diversified financial services indices dropped 0.74% and 0.78% respectively. Despite the overall decline in the real estate index, Afaq Holding for Investment & Real Estate Development (MANR) led the market with a 22.37% gain after closing at JOD1.86. Al-Rouya for Investments (ROYA) was listed on the Amman Stock Exchange for the first time and commenced trading on Thursday March 13th, 2014. ROYA, which has ten million outstanding shares and 15% free float, is listed in the diversified financial services sector on the market’s second market and it lists investing in a local private airline company as its sole purpose. ROYA dropped 42% compared to its share par value of JOD1 to JOD0.58 on its only trading day to become the market’s worst performer for the week. Al Arabi Investment Group “Member of the Arab Bank Group” [email protected] [email protected] The recovery of the hotels & tourism, and utilities & energy sectors in addition to the continued positive performance of the media sector contributed substantially to the 0.25% gain posted by the services index. Sura Development & Investment (SURA) led the hotels & tourism sector with a 2.44% gain to close at JOD0.42, and Jordan Press Foundation (PRES) led the media sector with a 1.49% gain to close at JOD2.73. In the meantime, Jordan Electric Power Company (JOEP) led the utilities & energy sector with a 2.43% gain to close at JOD2.95. Five industrial sub-sectors posted gains this past week and that led to a 0.04% rise in the industrial index. The chemical industries led the way with a 1.95% gain as Jordan Industrial Resources (JOIR) gained 9.52% to close at JOD0.46. The engineering & construction index gained 1.36% after Assas for Concrete Products (ASAS) led the sector with a 7.5% gain to close at JOD0.43, and the tobacco & cigarettes index gained 0.53% following a 0.8% gain by Al-Eqbal Investment Company (EICO) which closed the week at JOD12.60.
