This guide will supply you with information concerning the
School and the College.
Specific information concerning each of your subjects may be
found in the Subject Outlines. Read each Subject Outline
carefully. The outlines will be distributed in class during the
first week of classes.
The AST program prepares students for entry into one of the
2 year programs within the Faculty of Applied Science and
Engineering Technology as well as the School of Computer
Studies:

It is your responsibility to be punctual in attending classes,
labs and with the submission of assignments and reports.
The School of Biological Sciences and Applied Chemistry is found in the Stephen E. Quinlan
building (Seneca@York) on the third floor, room S3033. The administrative area and faculty
may be found within the complex of ‘SBSAC’ offices in the southeast corner of the building.
The laboratory area is in the east wing.

First Semester Timetables
After you have been accepted to the AST program, you need to write English and
Mathematics Assessment Tests to determine your placement [i.e. the course best
suited to your individual needs]. If you have not written these Assessment Tests please
call 416-491-5050 ext 26868 or book online at
https://www2.senecacollege.ca/testbooking/assessment/ immediately. Helpful
information about the Math Assessment test can be found at
http://biochem.senecac.on.ca/ ; click on Math Assessment FAQs/Practice test.
If you have written the English and Math placement tests, your timetable was mailed to
you. Please review your timetable to ensure that you are registered for the required
first semester courses… one of the following English courses EAC150/EAC149/EAP
330/300/500, PSY356, MTH145, and IST100 lecture and laboratory. [Note there may be
some modifications to this list for Fall 2014 which were not available at the time of publishing]
Your science (IST100) contains both a lecture and laboratory component. Your lecture is
offered for three periods and is indicated on your timetable by a code such as IST100AA.
Your laboratory is offered on alternate weeks for three periods, and is indicated on your
timetable by a code such as IST100A. The "A" represents your laboratory section for
science in this example.

SIRIS - Student Internet Registration and Information System
At School – After Sept 8th, help will be available in the
1st floor Learning Commons for using SIRIS, the Student
Internet Registration and Information System.
Only make changes to your timetable in consultation
with your coordinator/student advisor.
Student
coordinators and scheduler will be available in the main
office to assist.
It is your
responsibility to
ensure that you have
the proper courses for
first semester on your
timetable.
You have until Mon Sept 8th, 2014 to ADD or CHANGE SECTIONS of a course and until
the following Mon Sept 15th, 2014 to DROP a class without academic or financial
penalty. Changing a section of a class constitutes an ADD and can only be done during
the FIRST week of classes.
Laboratory Classes (IST100)
Your program is designed to teach each student the hands-on
laboratory skills necessary to function in a laboratory setting.
Therefore laboratory practice is essential and compulsory. Students
who fail to attend more than two labs in IST100 may fail that
course.
Safety in each laboratory class is mandatory and it is the
responsibility of each student to adhere to all safety regulations.

Laboratory classes start the first week of classes. Be prepared to participate. You will
be supplied with a laboratory coat and lab kit.

MySeneca
MySeneca is a one-stop online resource that allows access to information and Services
about Seneca College: e-mail, course material, student services, employee services, and
much more.
MySeneca is based on software developed by Blackboard Inc. and enhanced by Seneca
College. This software, along with custom developed tools and resources, enables
communication among members of the Seneca community. The MySeneca portal links
the entire Seneca community to a broad range of college information, services, and
internal organizations.

English and Liberal Studies Information
Timetables
Your timetable should include a first semester English subject based on your English
Skills Assessment results: EAP330 (10h/wk), EAP300 (5 h/wk), EAP500 (4 h/wk), EAC149
(4 h/wk) or EAC150 (3 h/wk). Unless you have been exempted from EAC150 (EXM will
appear on your transcript on SIRIS), you must take English in your first semester. If
English is not on your first semester timetable, see your English and Liberal Studies
Coordinator in Room S2086.

English and Liberal Studies curriculum requirements, subject schedules and outlines,
faculty timetable, and other helpful information.
Advanced Standings in General Education Subjects
If you are seeking advanced standings in English or
Liberal Studies subjects, please take your transcript
and subject descriptions from the institution where
you studied to English and Liberal Studies Coordinator
in Room S2086. These must be for credits that were
earned at a post-secondary institution.

Counselling and Accessibility Services
There are two aspects to these services:
 General Counselling, personal, academic, and career counselling
 Special Needs; counselling services to students with recognized disabilities
General Counselling
Counsellors will assist you with any problems that may be interfering with your ability to
be a successful student. Problems commonly raised in counselling include relationship
difficulties, addictions, financial stress, depression, anxiety and academic difficulties. It is
never too early or too late to come for assistance. A counsellor may help you discover
options you had not considered.
Special Needs
Some counsellors specialize in assisting students, who have documented disabilities,
succeed in their academic programs. Such disabilities include learning disabilities,
mental health problems and chronic medical conditions, as well as various physical
impairments. Academic accommodations, such as extra time on tests or a note taker is
available.
There is no cost to Seneca College of Applied Arts and Technology students for these
services.
