CRAFTENGINE – DISTRIBUTED ELECTRICITY PRODUCTION > Small-scale local power generation from renewable energy sources > Industrial piston engine design by AVL – low cost and high reliability > Conservative design – low maintenance and long lifetime > Cost-effective – competitive energy costs (typ. €4-14 cents/kWh) > Technology protected through several patents CRAFTENGINE can utilize any heat source with temperatures from ~80 °C (180 °F) and upwards such as waste heat sources, geothermal hot springs and wells, biomass boilers and solar thermal collectors in order to generate electricity, heating and even cooling for needed purposes. CRAFTENGINE in combination with various heat sources provides a very competitive alternative to current Photovoltaic and Combined Heat and Power (CHP) systems. CRAFTENGINE can be installed in any type of building ranging from common households* and farms to larger commercial and industrial facilities in order to supply heating, cooling and/or electricity. CRAFTENGINE is the first and only small-scale engine that can run exclusively on renewable, low-temperature heat sources. CRAFTENGINE is fully scalable, and may be adapted for a range of uses, spanning from the needs of standard households* to larger industrial applications. * The current CraftEngine design is suitable for multi-family homes and larger residential facilities. Solar Waste heat Biomass Geothermal Heat Sources CraftEngine expander Operational field tests are presently ongoing and the CraftEngine system is available for order for select applications from now. The CraftEngine technology is protected through a comprehensive set of patents covering a variety of novel features that make it unique. 20140429/HNR: Rev 007 Detail design and manufacturing by AVL CRAFTENGINE Technical Specifications (all parameters are approximate and subject to change) Input temperature range: Output temperature range*: Engine type: Engine speed range: Electrical output power, single units*: Electrical output power, PowerPacks*: Electric conversion efficiency: Brake thermal efficiency*: Electrical efficiency*: Input heat power*: Output heat power*: Maintenance interval (indicated): System weight: System dimensions (indicated): Noise level: 80 – 215 °C (180 – 420 °F) 20 – 90 °C (70 – 190 °F) Reciprocating (piston engine) Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) 750 – 1500 RPM 2 – 10 kW 10 – 50 kW 85 % 6 – 18 % 5 – 16 % 30-150 kW (102 000 - 512 000 BTU/hr) ≈ Input heat power - Output power (electrical) Simple maintenance once a year, overhaul after five years not available yet 750 x 1755 x 1922 mm (2’ 5½” x 5’ 9” x 6’ 3½”) not available yet (generator and inverter combined) (single engine – preliminary dimensions) (will satisfy current norms) *depending on operating conditions Performance estimates for selected applications: CraftEngine single units Waste heat Boundary conditions: Source temp.
