CHAPLAIN & PLACES OF WORSHIP (QUITE SPACE)
The OPC is aware of and fully supports the diversity of our province. OPC has a
chaplain on call for residents who works alongside and has contact with personnel from
other faith traditions and is able to refer residents.
OPC has available to all students and guests a “Quiet Room” for quiet reflective space.
It supports individual well-being and is available for multiple users.
Member of staff in the Equity and Inclusion office are available to provide information
and support. Their office is located on the main floor.
COURSE PARTICIPATION
Every component of the Basic Constable course is essential for the proper development
of a police officer. The Basic Constable course is designed to introduce academic
training and practical skills in sequence to maximize learning. Consequently, students
are required to participate fully in academic and practical skill training during the
same 60 day program. Students and employers are reminded the Basic Constable
program is academically and physically challenging. Students should begin preparing
themselves immediately or continuing a fitness regime that will enable them to
participate in a rigorous physically demanding program.
The College recognizes that occasionally, the sequence of academic and practical skills
training is jeopardized by illness, injury or other circumstance. When the College
believes the student’s success will be compromised due to absence or nonparticipation, the College will recommend the employing police service withdraw the
student from the program.
Students who are withdrawn from the program for such reasons will not be
unreasonably denied the opportunity to return to the College at the request of their
employing police service.

Applied Police Learning (Academics)
Students must complete a series of cumulative written tests and final examinations. A
mark of 75% per subject is required. The College will contact the employing police
service when a student has missed five days of academic training to discuss the
student’s ability to continue in the program. After 10 consecutive days of absence
the College will recommend the employer withdraw the student from the current
program.
Practical Skills Training
Students must meet standard in a series of tests that include judgment and proficiency
in a practical skill. If a student is unable to participate in more than 3 consecutive
sessions of the same practical skill discipline (firearms, defensive tactics, officer
safety, police vehicle operations or fitness) the College will contact the employing
police service and recommend the student be withdrawn from the current
program.
Leadership Training
While at the Ontario Police College [OPC] participating in the Basic Constable Training
[BCT] program you will be required to participate in academic sessions relating to
leadership skills. You will also be required to have a working familiarity with the OPC
Leadership Principles as outlined in your Student Handbook.
During your time at OPC you will be expected to demonstrate an understanding of these
lessons and principles by applying them independently in your daily conduct. In
addition, you will be expected to participate in assigned positions of leadership such as
Student Duty Officer, Class Leader, Flag Orderly and POD Leaders.
Whether you are assigned a task or acting independently you will be held accountable for
your actions. All duties carried out professionally and in accordance with established
OPC Leadership Principles will be positively documented and forwarded to your
respective police services.
In the event you do not fulfill your obligations or act in a way that is unprofessional and
in breach of the OPC Leadership Principles, your actions will be addressed and you
could face formal negative documentation which will be forwarded to your police
service.

Due to the large variety of holsters used by police services in Ontario, the OPC issues a
generic metal training pistol to recruits for the duration of the BCT intake. Not all
holsters accept this metal pistol reliably. For example, the Raptor© holster has proven
to be problematic with this type of inert pistol. To alleviate the potential for strain or
damage to equipment, it is recommended that Services issue their recruits with inert
pistols that are best suited for their respective holsters. If your service has issued you
with an inert pistol, please inform OPC Supervisor of Firearms. You be required to
have a cable lock for storage of the red gun in your room. Red guns shall be stored in
