The VW Transporter (T5 model)
does not have a conventional
clutch that is driven by the belt.
This clutch is designed to be pulled
by a shaft that is connected to the
alternator as well. Therefore an
overrunning alternator pulley is
mounted at the end of the clutch.
Once the compressor clutch breaks
down, the overrunning alternator
pulley has to be replaced. Usually
the grease inside the bearing of
the pulley escapes, and the pulley
starts to drift causing the clutch
to fail and the compressor to
break down.

Damaged freewheel - Poor maintenance of the power
steering pump and the air condition compressor causes
damages to the GATES clutch (torn or cracked teeth).
• Make sure that the GATES clutch does not have any visual damages.

• Make sure that the overload protection does not
prevent the compressor from turning the freewheel.
By movement or blocks in either direction, replace the
freewheel with OT no. 070 903 201 C (photo 1).
• Do not replace a fully functioning AC compressor
when the freewheel is defective.
• Replace the damaged GATES clutch with OT no. 070
903 327 (see photos 2 & 3).

• Check if sleeves and mounting dowels on the bracket
are worn. Furthermore, check if bracket dimensions
are accurate.
• By measurement of 60 mm +/- 5.5 mm (measured
without sleeves), replace bracket with OT no. 070
260 885 A.
