Code 63 home purchasing program update for 2014-15

In response to many parent requests, we are happy to announce that we have worked
with our vendors and leveraged our volume ordering arrangements so that families now
have the opportunity to purchase technology at special pricing directly from our
vendors. This will result in a student having personally owned technology similar to
what they are accustom to using in terms of the hardware and software bundled.
For those families unable to take advantage of the home purchasing programs through
our vendors they may access technology at the school level. The principal may use
existing technology resources or may consider new purchases or any other sources at
their disposal. If this is not an option for your school, principals have been invited to
seek further support through their Area Office as additional resources may be made
available. Finally, as this technology may not be in place immediately, schools will have
access to a wide range of inclusive technologies available for short term loan through
ILC Outreach. Loan periods, depending on need, typically range from 2 to 6 weeks,
however, in extenuating circumstances, longer loan periods will be available depending
on availability.
Code 63 identification will continue for the 2014/2015 school year for students who were
enrolled at Dr. Oakley School or within one of our Learning and Literacy Programs. This
internal CBE code identifies these students as requiring Assistive Technology Access
and does not have funding attached similar to Alberta Education codes.
To prepare for the upcoming 2014/2015 school year:
1. The Student Learning Team reviews last year’s IPP, consults with previous
teachers where necessary regarding the student use of technology, and
collaborates with the student and their parents/guardians to determine how the
learning technology needs will be met. Potential options to support include:
a) School teams explore the potential to provide technology using current
resources or those that may be made available through current student
funding model.
b) School teams request Area support to access technology
c) School teams contact Information Learning Commons (ILC) for support
in accessing technology
d) Parents/independent students can purchase laptop and software
through the Inclusive Technology Laptop Purchase Opportunity (details
to be released in June)
2. Please ensure that every student in your school who is a previous Dr. Oakley or
L&L student has the program code (63) entered in SIRS on the Government tab.


3.
This code does not “roll over” and therefore must be entered at your school.
SPED Key Users enter program codes on the Government Tab, in the Spec
Ed Program field (as distinct from the Grant Program field(s) which should
already be populated for this student).
With entry of Code 63, this paragraph will be printed on the first page of the
student’s Individual Program Plan:
Assistive Technology Access: The CBE would like to formally acknowledge ubiquitous
access to technology for students who previously were enrolled at Dr. Oakley School or
in a Learning and Literacy (L&L) program as assistive technology is a key component for
both programs. The assistive technology will support student access to engage and
express their understanding as a learner within the school environment. Details
regarding assistive technology are identified in the accommodations section and/or
transition section of this Individual Program Plan
Beyond Learning and Literacy Laptop Project (BLL Project 2009 – 2011)
Background: For the students who participated in this project which occurred between
September 2009 – June 2011, a laptop was provided to each student upon leaving the
Dr. Oakley or Learning and Literacy Program as they transitioned back to their
designated schools. Some of these students have continued to use this laptop and
some students have chosen to relinquish their laptop and are accessing alternative
technology.
Current Situation: We have students in our schools that are currently using these BLL
laptops, but there are a number of BLL laptops not currently assigned. Due to the age
of the laptops (3-5 years old) and the potential time delays for student access to this
technology (re-imaging and redeployment) in the Fall, please follow the process below
for the 2014/2015 school year.
For students who are currently using these BLL Project laptops and assistive software:
-
continue to keep the laptop onsite for the specific student to use for the
2014/2015 school year. Do not send the laptop(s) to Highfield to be reimaged.
if the student transitions to a different CBE school, the laptop follows the student
so please send it along with the Student Record
if the student transitions to a non-CBE school, the laptop stays at the current
site to be reassigned by school personnel
if the student relinquishes the laptop, school personnel may at their discretion
re-assigned the laptop to students outside of the BLL project
Schools gain ownership and assume responsibility for maintenance of the
laptop
Disposal: BLL laptops are not covered under the Evergreen plan, so when the
laptop requires disposal, please follow your current school based process. If
unsure, ask your School Tech.
Please contact the Information Learning Commons (ILC) to return any unassigned BLL
laptops that the school does not wish to re-assign.
