What a whirlwind of activity in our library! We’re off to a great start with Accelerated Reader. A few students have already reached their AR goal for the first nine weeks by taking quizzes on the books they read for the summer “TAKE 5” challenge. Great thinking! We are also taking STAR tests to find reading ranges. Lots of information will be coming home about AR, AR Home Connect, and Word Millionaire. For families that may not know, Accelerated Reader (AR) is a big part of our reading enhancement at BVES. Students in 2nd – 5th begin AR right away. 1st grade may begin in January if they are ready. Our upgrades in our library are beautiful! We have new shelving, paint, and lighting, counter tops and a gorgeous sparkling floor. Thanks to the many who helped get our library up and running the first two weeks of school! We look forward to enjoying our school’s 50th birthday celebration all year long with our usual focus on becoming great readers! From Mrs. Michel Dear Parents, Be a Reading Role Model by setting aside family reading time every day. An excellent place to start this adventure is at your public library. A recent article, by Reading Rocket, tells you nine great reasons to head to your local library. For families with young children, the public library is a great place to find entertainment, educational or cultural enrichment, or valuable information. You can check out the complete article at readingrockets.org. Top 9 reasons to go visit your local library: 1. Free programs and activities 2. Story times 3. Workshops 4. Books 5. Audiobooks 6. Movies 7. Music 8. Magazines and newspapers 9. Free Computer and internet usage News From Mrs. Harrison, Curriculum Facilitator In an effort to raise our daily attendance rate as a team, we will have a friendly competition between each homeroom within a particular grade level. Daily, the teachers are asked to graph the number of students present. These graphs will be used to calculate which homeroom has the best attendance rate for the month. The homeroom with the highest average will be deemed the Attendance Winner and will get to display the Attendance Ribbon by their door. Not only will the winning class have their picture posted on the Attendance Board but will receive a special treat. Hopefully, by motivating our students to attend school we will raise our attendance rate which will ultimately benefit our students and school academically. From Mrs. Guarisco….. Greetings! Safety continues to be a priority here at Bayou Vista Elementary. The car rider dismissal procedure has been exceptionally good. Thanks to all of you who have helped make this possible. However, we need your help. Please display the car rider sign given to you. If you are still in need of a car rider sign, please write a note to the teacher. If your child is usually a walker; but is a car rider on rainy days, please get a car rider sign. You can request more than one sign for multiple vehicles. Parents that drop students off in the front of school in the mornings must go through the circle driveway. Never block the entrance or exit to the driveway. Please note that there are no teachers on duty in the morning prior to 7:30. Students can NOT get to school prior to 7:30. We desperately need your help again this year with attendance. We need you to make sure your child comes to school every day that they are not ill. Students are missing valuable class time when they are late or check out early as well. All absences will be unexcused unless your child has a medical excuse from a doctor. Let’s work as a team to get our attendance rate even higher this year. To help with this, we will have monthly ATTENDANCE COMPETITIONS between homeroom classes. I would love to put BVES on top with high student attendance! It’s fundraiser time! Please support our school and our students by participating in our efforts to raise funds. All funds go back to the students to support education. Free and Reduced Lunch forms are due September 18. Please get these in asap. Debts that were incurred prior to being put on free or reduced status are due now in the cafeteria. This month some of our students and teachers will take a special picture with our new 50th Anniversary t-shirt. We will stand in a 5-0 pattern to take the picture. This is our 50th Anniversary activity for the month of September. Thanks to all who participated in our Jean Day Fundraiser for ALS on Friday, August 29. We raised $543 to give to ALS Research.
