Construction Leader Mar/Apr 2014 Trade associations come together to host large construction career day T he Build Your Future (BYF) initiative is excited to announce it has teamed up with industry partners in San Antonio to host a Construction Career Day event on April 9, 2014 at Freeman Coliseum’s Expo Hall in San Antonio, Texas. It will be held 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. More than 800 select students are expected to attend to watch equipment and welding demonstrations, speak with local employers in the construction industry, and visit booths representing various professions in construction. This important event comes on the heels of AGC of America’s new Workforce Development Plan which was released in February. The plan outlines a series of measures AGC is urging national, state, and local officials to take to make it easier for associations, school districts, and construction firms to establish training programs to help prepare future construction workers. The mission of the BYF is to narrow the skills gap by guiding America’s youth and displaced workers into opportunities for advanced education and training, that lead to long-term rewarding careers in construction. We can accomplish this mission by fulfilling the following goals: • Make career and technical education a priority in secondary schools; • Shift the public’s negative perception about careers in the construction industry to reflect the wide range of professions available; and • Provide a path from ambition, to training, to job placement as a craft professional. These goals are also consistent with the work being accomplished at the Construction Careers Academy (CCA) at Earl Warren High School in the Northside Independent School District. CCA’s mission “is to provide an advanced and rigorous curriculum with a focus on construction technology, construction management, architectural design, applied engineering and real-world experience that will prepare students for studies in higher education and/or a career in a construction-related industry.” Among the many AGC members participating in the event are Zachry Construction Corporation; Marek Brothers Systems, Inc.; and Joeris General Contractors, Ltd. AGC volunteers include Becky Landry, Catto & Catto, LLP and Hilda Fernandez, 8A Electric, Inc.; ABC, ASA, and the Builders Exchange Education Council are also sponsoring the event and providing volunteers. For more information, contact Stacy Gunderson at (210) 657-4437 or stacygunderson@ marekbros.com. On a broader note, the national Workforce Development Plan acknowledges that as demand continues to pick up around the country, the construction industry will face worker shortages with increasing frequency. Decades of converging policy, educational, and demographic trends have combined to dismantle the once robust vocational education system that provided a steady supply of skilled construction workers. The Georgia and Alabama chapters of AGC have established “Go Build” recruiting programs in their states. And the statewide AGC of Wisconsin chapter has established a similar Build Wisconsin recruiting program which AGC of America has made available as a template website for Texas chapters to use. Yet while the San Antonio Chapter and other chapters across the country stand ready to make the investments needed, and take the steps required to prepare the next generation of construction workers, current regulations and investment patterns limit our ability to solve the challenge of worker shortages on our own. The industry’s multitude of trade associations must work together more often. Fortunately, through a combination of new investments, pragmatic changes, and measures like immigration reform, we will have the ability to provide sufficient workers in the short term and a more robust domestic supply in the long term. That is why the AGC of America will work to encourage officials at all levels of government to implement the measures outlined in the plan. The consequences of inaction are simply too severe – for both the construction industry and for the broader economy. Construction Leader FRONTLINES by Sam Nunnelly, Chapter President initiative that focuses on two components: messaging and trade skills development. We are working to capture the attention of our potential workforce. Studies have shown that a construction career path is viewed negatively and we are campaigning to correct that problem. The Build Your Future initiative featured on the front page is an example of one effort underway. As the results from a recent AGC survey show, 36 percent of the participating firms expect market growth in 2014 while an additional 32 percent are expecting growth in 2015. We are also looking at Alabama’s “Go Build” campaign. It is another great example of how to attack the misconception. The goal is to educate young people on the value of learning a trade and to dispel the mistaken belief that a career as a skilled construction tradesman is a negative thing. The bright outlook is once again forcing us to address the workforce development problem. It is estimated that 1.5 million new workers are needed to complete the work already slated for 2014. As we are working to inform and educate the general population of the opportunity that lies with a career in the construction industry, we are specifically collaborating with schools and trade associations to make resources available. This problem is bigger than any single company or association can solve. We are working on a workforce development For more information, call 210 349.4921. We are already planning the Fun Shoot, Midyear Economic Forum, and the Annual AGC/AIA Joint Luncheon. The first quarter of the year marks the Installation Luncheon, the Salsa Taste-off, and the Annual Golf Tournament. These three occasions are always fun networking events and serve as reminders that AGC members work hard, but enjoy opportunities to mix and mingle. Aside from the networking events, we have been busy with politics too. As you may know, the Political Action Committee (PAC) is supporting County Judge Nelson Wolff, House Speaker Joe Straus, and former chapter president Mike Novak in his State Senate Dist. 25 race. Two of those three races will probably be decided in primaries before this newsletter lands in your inbox. However, the work of the PAC will go on. We’ll continue to do some fundraising in the spring, but we’ll also be focused on the runoff races and begin planning for the General Election. Moreover, we hope to schedule a few forums to flush out where candidates stand on business issues. For example, we may organize an event with the primary winners in the County Commissioner Pct. 4 race. If you would like to be more involved in our event planning, or the effort to elect construction industry-friendly candidates, call me.
