Here - CBM - Milwaukee School of Engineering

Dear State Directors,
The Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) Center for BioMolecular Modeling (CBM) and the Research
Collaboratory for Structural Bioinformatics Protein Data Bank (RCSB PDB) are pleased to work with Science Olympiad to
offer the 2015 Protein Modeling Event. This event is co-sponsored by grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH)
SEPA and SEDAPA programs, and contributions from 3D Molecular Designs (3DMD) and Vertex Pharmaceuticals.
The Protein Modeling event is comprised of 3 Parts: (1) a pre-build model, (2) an onsite model and (3) an onsite
written exam. MSOE CBM will provide all materials for the onsite model, judges’ models and exams/keys for parts (2) and
(3) of this event for regional, state and national competitions at no cost to the tournament directors. To purchase
materials for invitational competitions, write to the event developers listed below.
Materials needed for participating in the Protein Modeling event:
(1) The Pre-Build Model: Pre-build kits may be directly purchased from 3DMD at
http://www.3dmoleculardesigns.com/Science-Olympiad-Protein-Modeling-Kits.htm. Although other materials may be used,
teams are encouraged to purchase the 3DMD kits to help lower our expenses in supplying the free onsite model materials.
(2) The On-site Model: The CBM will provide regional, state, and national tournament directors with the following on-site
build materials:
• Appropriate length mini-toobers (foam-covered wires) for the on-site model
• Blue and Red end- caps (used to indicate the N and C termini of the protein)
• Amino acid sidechains that will be added to the on-site model
• Plastic cross-linkers that will stabilize the folded on-site model
For each tournament, the onsite build materials will include one copy of a physical model of both the pre-build and the
on-site model proteins for use by the event supervisor to aid in scoring the student-constructed models. The CBM will also
provide rubrics for scoring both pre-build and on-site models, guides to the rubrics and online visualization programs
needed for the on-site build. The visualization program (Jsmol) can be installed on computers used for the competition, or
can be accessed via an online website. Directions for both options will be included on the CD that accompanies these
materials.
(3) The On-site Exam: The CBM will also provide exams and answer keys for the on-site exams. Digital copies of these
materials will be included on the CD that accompanies the materials sent to tournament directors.
How to Request the On-site Materials:
To obtain the free materials for the regional, state and national competitions complete the form on our website at
http://cbm.msoe.edu/scienceOlympiad/supervisor2.php. This form will ask for the following information:
 Name and contact information for the state director (to be used if we have questions)
 Name and contact information for the person requesting the materials
 Shipping address for the materials. The CBM will ship materials for each regional and state tournament
separately to the appropriately designated individual.
 Dates of tournaments
 Date materials are needed by – if earlier than one week before the tournament date.
 Number of kits needed for this tournament. (Unused kits should be returned to the CBM).
Please complete the form as soon as possible to allow ample time to pack and ship the materials. CBM may not be
able to fulfill requests made less than two weeks before the tournament; rush orders may incur expedited shipping charges.
Please note that tournament directors have the option of obtaining their own on-site model materials. If you opt for
this option, contact the event developers listed below to request only the CD.
Where to Find Additional Information About the 2015 Protein Modeling Event:
A dedicated Science Olympiad website has been created to provide event details, rules, and information pertinent to the
theme for the 2015 Protein Modeling event. Please direct participants, parents, coaches and event supervisors to either the
page hosted at MSOE CBM http://cbm.msoe.edu/scienceOlympiad or the one hosted by RCSB PDB
http://education.pdb.org/olympiad/.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us (event developers).
