INTRODUCTION
WELCOME to the 36th Annual Banquet of The Cleveland Museum of Natural History
Trout Club. We hope you enjoy the evening!
THE CLUB
The Trout Club is an associated society of The Cleveland Museum of Natural History, a
501(c)(3) non-profit organization. We are one of the oldest angling clubs in the United
States and have roughly 300 members. The club meets monthly from October through
April. We enjoy presentations by accomplished speakers connected to fisheries and flyfishing. If you are not already a member of the Trout Club, please consider joining, or
attending one of our upcoming events. Membership brochures are available tonight, or:
Contact Karen Menn at The Cleveland Museum of Natural History:
(216) 231-4600, extension 3278, e-mail [email protected] or join by going to our
website www.cmnhtc.org
THE BANQUET
The Annual Banquet is our primary fund raising event. Funds generated from this
evening’s event support local, regional and national projects that preserve and enhance
our fisheries and natural environment. Your support is crucial to our success.
The Club has donated over $275,000 to cold-water conservation, land preservation and
other qualified projects. We support the Museum and other organizations that are
consistent with our mission. This summer, with support from the Club, young men and
women will have the opportunity to discover the artful sport of fly fishing and learn
environmental stewardship by participating in the museum’s First Cast summer camp
program. Our support for a land acquisition, a few years back, resulted in Lake
Metroparks opening the 76 acre Baker Road Park to Grand River anglers, birders,
hikers and people looking for a view of wilderness, in October 2012. Seven years ago,
we provided support to the Friends of the Crooked River in their efforts to clean up the
Cuyahoga River and to the Cuyahoga River Planning Organization in their efforts to
install fish habitat plants along the banks of the Cuyahoga River in downtown
Cleveland. Other important projects have included 11 educational grants to the
Cuyahoga Valley Environmental Education Center Scholarship Fund, support for
Casting for Recovery’s breast cancer fly fishing retreat and support for the restoration of
Shady Brook stream at The Holden Arboretum. We support the Museum directly, having
underwritten the $20,000 cost to bring an exhibit from the American Museum of Fly
Fishing entitled “Humanity in Midstream” to Cleveland nine years ago
SUPPORT
The success of the Banquet depends on donors, sponsors, and contributors. Please
support the businesses and organizations that support us.
Special thanks to The Cleveland Museum of Natural History, and the Museum
employees for their hard work, their support, and the opportunity to share in this unique
institution through our meetings and banquet.

J.D. Wagner Handcrafted
Bamboo Rod
J.D. Wagner Handcrafted Bamboo Fly Rod
J.D. Wagner
Rodmaker
J.D. Wagner Rodmakers are pleased to present this bamboo fly rod in support of The Cleveland
Museum of Natural History Trout Club. This Signature Series 7’ 3wt. Penta, 2 piece/2 tip fly rod
is an exquisite casting tool for small streams and flies.
This Wagner rod is made in Penta form: 5 strips as opposed to the usual 6! The penta form was
made famous by the Uslan rod company, who believed that the penta geometry produced a rod
with its own unique casting characteristics. Uslan rods are quite rare, and we don’t build many
pentas ourselves, which makes this rod quite special. A great rod for small streams and small
flies, we give this rod the title ‘Trico Special’. This rod is made from select Tonkin cane chosen
for maximum power fiber density, hand split, and milled to exacting tolerances. This rod was
built using the finest materials available with an eye toward detail and quality. This rod includes
many special features:
• Richly Flamed Cane
• Produced From One Culm of Bamboo – Tips Are Mirror Matched
• Oxidized Nickel Silver Hardware, Highest Quality Nickel Silver ferrules
• Agate Stripping Guide in Oxidized Nickel Silver Frame
• Exclusive Rope Braid Sterling Silver Hook Keeper
• Top Quality Cork Grip
• Top Grade Oxidized Nickel Silver Butt Cap and Ring With Burl Amboena Spacer
• Harmonizing Silk Wraps
• Signed and Numbered
• Complete With Two Tips, Cloth Bag and Aluminum Case With Solid Brass Endcaps
The Trout Club extends its sincere thanks to J.D. Wagner Rodmaker for
helping with this year's Reverse Raffle!

Top Hat
During the 19 century, the top hat developed from a
fashion into a symbol of urban respectability, and this was
assured when Prince Albert started wearing them in 1850;
the rise in popularity of the silk plush top hat possibly led to
a decline in beaver hats, sharply reducing the size of the
beaver trapping industry in North America, though it is also
postulated that the beaver numbers were also reducing at
the same time. Whether it directly affected or was
coincidental to the decline of the beaver trade is debatable.

LIVE AUCTION ITEMS
There are 28 live auction items offered for bidding this year:
L01 Maple Syrup Flower Basket
Bid on a flower basket of one gallon of 2014 Maple Syrup from Piccolo Pines Farm in Geauga
County. The basket will have 8 one-pint maple leaf bottles, bottled especially for the Trout Club
Banquet. Maple syrup is made by boiling 50 gallons of sap down to 1 gallon of sweet, golden syrup.
The sap is collected by tapping 10 inch or larger sugar maple trees during the late winter. As the
weather cycles from above freezing to below freezing, the sap is pumped up the trees and the liquid
drips out of the tap into the waiting buckets. The buckets are emptied daily and processed through
an evaporator that is fired by wood or other fuel. As the steam billows off the evaporator pan, all that
are near are enchanted by the maple syrup fragrance.
Minimum Bid: $100.00

L05 Arthur Shilstone - Autumn On The River - a study
We are pleased to have an original from Arthur Shilstone donated by him through the efforts of the
J. Russell Jinishian Gallery. His work is part of the permanent collection of the American Museum of
Flyfishing in Manchester, VT. He is a frequent contributor to Gray's Sporting Journal, Smithsonian
Magazine, and Sporting Classics to name a few. This work is a study, which is a preliminary
painting by Mr. Shilstone before he completes a full size painting of the same subject. He is over 90
years old, and still paints almost daily.
According to Sporting Art News: "Arthur Shilstone continues to produce at the very highest level in
the sporting art arena and time has not compromised his execution of his trade or the results of his
efforts. He continues to produce and amaze; and collectors continue to discover through his
masterful imagery, new ways to perceive and enjoy Sporting Art and their sporting pastimes.
Collectors today recognize Shilstone as the world's finest art watercolorist and most closely
compare him to one of his notable predecessors--Ogden Pleissner. Simply put, Shilstone IS today's
Pleissner and the comparisons are clearly substantiated. His watercolors, pure and simple, are the
proof collectors recognize and why they choose to mention him in the same breath as many of his
distinguished predecessors. And, at age 90, there was a time in which Shilstone was in fact a
contemporary of these greats."

J.D. Wagner Rodmakers are pleased to present this bamboo fly rod in support of

3wt. Penta, 2 piece/2 tip fly rod is an exquisite casting tool for small streams and
flies.
This Wagner rod is made in Penta form: 5 strips as opposed to the usual 6! The
penta form was made famous by the Uslan rod company, who believed that the
penta geometry produced a rod with its own unique casting characteristics. Uslan
rods are quite rare, and we don’t build many pentas ourselves, which makes this
rod quite special. A great rod for small streams and small flies, we give this rod
the title ‘Trico Special’. This rod is made from select Tonkin cane chosen for
maximum power fiber density, hand split, and milled to exacting tolerances. This
rod was built using the finest materials available with an eye toward detail and
quality. This rod includes many special features:
