REQUEST FOR PROPOSAL – CONSULTING SERVICES
03-Jul-2014
TCMG GLX CEP RFP 0001 – STEM/NGSS
RE:
Massachusetts Board of Elementary and Secondary Education Programs:
(STEM) Massachusetts Science and Technology/Engineering, and Math Curriculum Framework
(NGSS) Next Generation Science Standards
Cambridge, Medford, and Somerville school districts.
PROGRAM OVERVIEW – TCMG CEP
The Compliance Mentor Group (TCMG) under contract with MassDOT and the MBTA is delivering
an educational services program, the Construction Exploration Program (CEP), to introduce middle
school students to future career opportunities with the MBTA, utilizing the ongoing MassDOT / MBTA
Green Line Extension (GLX) Project to relate workplace activities to classroom concepts.
The basic objective of the Construction Exploration Program is to enhance implementation of the MA
ESE STEM Curriculum. The CEP strategy is to broaden student awareness of their place in the
workforce, stimulate their enthusiasm to participate in it, and thereby strengthen their motivation
to achieve STEM learning objectives. A key requisite for the implementation of the Construction
Exploration Program is that it must enhance existing STEM Curriculum delivery in the classroom without
creating additional work for school teachers or reducing the time scheduled to cover subject matter. The
Construction Exploration Program is fundamentally an enrichment of the teaching resources available to
our public school teachers.
The tasks assigned to the STEM Consultant, responding to this request for proposal, would be:
1) Identify target STEM Standard learning objectives at each of the middle school grade levels, 6, 7 & 8.
The criteria for targeted learning objectives would include subjects where workplace applications of the
STEM Standard would help illuminate the value of the lesson for the student and facilitate their
comprehension of its usefulness in getting a job they might need, want and enjoy. The target subjects
should also be those that the school teacher believes the CEP would best enrich. The target subjects
should be selected for coverage within the course of eight, one-hour classroom sessions at each grade
level per academic term. NGSS objectives should be considered in target subject selection as well.
2) Assist in designing teaching methods, compatible with the STEM Curriculum Framework, to relate the
STEM Standard learning objectives to actual GLX jobs and personnel skill-sets. The STEM Consultant
would provide perspective from the classroom environment and collaborate with GLX personnel to
integrate perspectives with that of the workplace.
3) Assist in the incorporation of CEP performance measurement protocols, relating to student
participation in the CEP and STEM Curriculum objectives.
STEM consulting services would be compensated on a time and expense basis, or negotiated price where
appropriate.
