MEATH FORÓIGE’S
GOT TALENT
The Venue, Ratoath,
Ratoath Foróige hosted the Annual "Meath
Foróige's Got Talent" at The Venue in Ratoath
on Saturday 12th April 2014. Ten acts from
Foróige clubs all over Meath participated in the
night and great credit is due to them all for the
hours of practice they put in and for braving
the stage on the night. After an agonising wait
while the judges deliberated, the winner was
finally announced as Harriet Wilkinson from
Dunshaughlin Foróige Youth Café. Harriet
played the Harp and sang "All I want" and was a
hugely popular winner. She was presented with
the winners perpetual trophy and a cheque for
€150 for her club. Second place went to Andrew
Farrell of Dunshaughlin First Foróige with his
rendition of Robbie William's "Let me entertain
you" and both these acts now go forward to
represent Meath Foróige in the National
Foróiges Got Talent competition in May. Third
prize went to Megan Finnegan from Duleek
Foróige Club Caz who sang "All of me".
The judges commented that the standard of all
acts was extremely high and they were
delighted to have been there on the night.
JoeAnne O'Brien, our Foróige RYO, thanked
Ratoath Foróige for hosting this years event,
and the clubs for taking part on the night.
Best of luck from all in Meath Foróige to
Harriet and Andrew at the National
Competition.

This month Ratoath Foróige Club put a huge emphasis
on the regional talent show that we were hosting. We
had two entries, the wonderful Stephanie singing and a
group dance act. All choreography, concepts and
preparation were thought up and carried out by the
young members of our club. The night went up with a
bang and was a total success. We hope we have the
pleasure of hosting again next year.
We had our fun at the talent show but once again our
heads are set on a new target. We all are extremely
excited about attending this years Foróige Fest. Welly
designs and outfit ideas are already being thrown
around, and that's just the boys I'm referring to. We are
in the midst of assembling our scrapbook and are
shooting for a high prize.
Sixteen of our members went to the Hype Youth Fest in
th
Longford on Sat 26 April. The weather was a bit chilly
but mostly dry. There was plenty of entertainment on the
day from zorb bouncing to disco tent and everything in
between. The live bands were brilliant all day and Fergal
Darcy ended the night with a really good DJ session.

Our club was delighted to have 2 acts in this year’s
talent show and while we didn’t win any prizes we were
really delighted with the performance of Monika and her
backing singers Chantel, Katie and Niamh and the
superb playing of the mandolin by Oisin. We also
enjoyed a few songs on the way back in the bus. Thanks
to Mary T. for mentoring.
As another club year nears the end, members are
looking forward to the end of year trip which takes place
on May Bank Holiday weekend. This year’s trip is to
Carlingford Adventure Centre on Saturday 3rd with an
overnight stay on site and back home on Sunday 4th.
The centre caters for both land and water based
activities with plenty of activities to choose from.
The year was a very busy and enjoyable one for the club
members. There was plenty of interaction, with many
members happy just to relax, chat and listen to music
upstairs or participate in the sports activities.
Syddan was delighted to host the first interclub disco of
the year, the Halloween Disco on 25th October. There
was great preparation for the event and leaders and
members came together to create an appropriate
spooky display for the stage. There was a large
attendance from all clubs and the night was a great
success. Everyone was impressed with the stage.

Our club hoodies have now been distributed and look
great. It seems a long time ago since we were selling
Foróige pens to raise funds for them – it’s all worthwhile
now.
Thanks to all our leaders who have given up their time
over the year and we hope to see them next year!

Halloween Disco.
Following on from the disco, preparations got underway
for what has become the Syddan Foroige Youth Club
Annual Variety Show. The show was held on Sunday
the 8th December with a great array of acts including
singers, instrumentalists and comedy sketches. Many of
the acts were from within the club as well as a number
of former members and artists from the community and
neighbouring areas. The show was a fantastic success
in every department.

An art corner was put in place at the club as some
members had expressed a particular interest in this area
and an arts project was commenced in February.
February was a quiet month with the cancellation of the
Valentine’s disco and then the mid-term break.
Tea and biscuits are now part of the evening in the
senior club for those who wish to avail of this, and
members and leaders can chat together. Some
members took part in a school organised French student
exchange programme and some French students who
were staying with members, visited the club and enjoyed
the night immensely.
With the Easter break just ending, the Carlingford trip is
only one week away. This is the most popular event of
the year for club members of all ages and practically
everyone in the club is going on the trip. We hope that it
goes well and that the weather stays good for us.

We have had a busy few week with fundraising, talent
shows, concerts and trips. We welcomed Jenny Leonard
as a Leader in the club. Jenny is a member of the
Foróige Staff and lives in the parish. She will be a great
asset to the club. Jenny will run the Foróige Well-Being
Programme with members over a couple of nights.
After school on the 7th of March we held a cake sale at
Supervalu and made €143 for Focus Ireland to “Help the
Homeless”. At our club meeting that night we had
pancakes and games.
Frank McNamara, his family and friends, Niamh
Kavanagh and the Dunshaughlin Folk Group entertained
the packed church with songs and music for a Parish
Fundraising concert on March 28th. At the interval club
members sold raffle tickets and everyone enjoyed tea
and cakes after a fantastic night provided by the Foroige
Café Club.
Members of the Dunshaughlin First and Studio Youth
Clubs travelled to the Hill of Tara on Friday 4th April for
a hunt round the hill finding Easter Eggs. This is the third
year the clubs have run this event and it has proved
popular every time. This year we managed to get there
in daylight as the hour moved forward the weekend
previously. We brought the Frisbees with us as it was a
lovely evening as the hill has plenty of wide open space.
On our last weekend before the Easter Break members
of the club took part in the An Taisce ‘Spring Clean’
event this year. We linked in the Tidy Towns and took to
the Dunshaughlin Park on Friday 11th of April. We had
free Pizza after the pick up as a reward for a job well
done.
Members with their pickers and bibs provided by the
Tidy Town Committee for the litter pick in the park.
Dunshaughlin Foróige clubs had great success at this
years Talent show – see report on page 1.
The day after the talent show we were up early and
heading for a day trip to Carlingford. We had fantastic
weather for the day and took part in Tag Laser, an
Assault Course and Archery. After our weekend of
activities we were ready to take it easy for the Easter
holidays and are now ready for our last few weeks in the
First Dunshaughlin Foróige Club.

On the 4th of April all three Dunshaughlin groups went
to the Hill of Tara for an Easter egg hunt. We all got a
yummy easter egg and had a great time. Thanks to
Michael the first year group leader.
On the 11th April we had a design your own bun night!
We all sat around a big table full of buns, icing, sprinkles
and lots more of lovely things. We all had great buns
and full bellies. Thanks to all the parents who helped
make the buns. It is much appreciated by the members!

We had our annual car wash this month in the village,
and following our success last year, news got round and
we had a steady flow of cars from 11am until 2pm. All
the members enjoyed the banter and made a few €’s to
add to the kitty for our planned trip to Alton towers.
There was even time for a suds fight at the end!
On Good Friday we had a disco for all the local primary
schools in the area. We are very lucky to have three
DJ’S in our club - Ross Ennis, Adam Ryan and Fahre
O’Driscoll, each taking turns to get the kids dancing.
There were prizes for the best dancers on the night and
we ran our own tuck shop which made a healthy profit.
On Saturday we headed off to Hype in Longford for the
day and although we had a few showers we enjoyed the
experience and are looking forward to the Foróige Fest
in May to round off the year.
Thanks Myles for all the hard work you have done
during the year from Ardcath/Clonalvy Foróige PRO
Adam Ryan.

Slane Youth Café
By Dawn O’Brien, PRO & Daniel Carolan
Slane youth cafe began on Friday the 13th with a huge
crowd of 50 members in attendance. The following day
we had a National bag-pack Day in Tesco, Navan from
1-4pm. Elections took place on the 27th of September
to nominate the committee for the year. A lot of
canvasing went into it, and the clubs members
nominated: Emma-Jane O'Brien (Chairperson) Shane
Traynor (Secretary) Laoise Reilly (Treasurer) and Dawn
O'Brien (P.R.O).
October was very exciting. We did Tai Chi and Dragon
training and attended Halloween discos in Syddan.
Everyone in the club went to Causey Farm’s spooky
Halloween experience in October also. " Throwing
Halos", a local band played a gig for us. We went to
Slane Red Cross and learned a lot of very helpful new
First Aid skills. We attended a Christmas disco in
Caralanstown. The club was awarded €50,000 by
minister Frances Fitzgerald to support our work in
opening a permanent premises for the youth club.
This month we had a memorial for the youth clubs
chairperson Stef Kinehan because it coincided with her
birthday. Stefs Mam, Dad, Sister and Brother in law
were in attendance on the night. We celebrated by
playing Stef’s 2 favourite games, pass the orange and
musical chairs.

Since September my club has been very busy at the
beginning of year we did many things including going on
a trip to Funtasia with the younger group.
During the Christmas holidays the youth club helped
with a charity event and many of the members got very
involved and raised money for the cause.
In January we spent time preparing for the Stephanie
Kinehan memorial Photo Competition and won first prize
of a camera for our club.
In Febuary we did FabFeb and Jigsaw Meath visited us
and gave us an important talk on mental health. All
members of the club were in attendance for the delicious
pizza night for St Patricks Day. We held a Pool
Tournament between members and leaders and our
final winner was Aaron Lane. We have TaBTime on a
regular basis, and have movie nights.
Over the past while our club has being creating our
website , we have added many new factors to the
website including a music bar which will show new
upcoming house music .
