Bears teams at every level
participated in numerous Holiday
Tournaments over the last month.
The Mite Track II team made
great strides, winning the goalie
shootout at the Simi Valley
Thanksgiving Carver Classic.
The Track II squad also made it
to the finals of the Winter Holiday
Shootout at KHS in Anaheim,
taking home the runner-up title
after a closely contested 7-4 final.
The Squirt A team traveled to
Phoenix to compete in the Squirt
Elite division of the Arizona Hockey
Clubs Thanksgiving Shootout.
After decisive early round victories
over the Jr. Coyotes and Arizona
Union, the Bears fell short 3-1 in
the finals. A hot goalie proved to
be the difference, as the Bears
outshot the Jr. Ducks 23-16, but
couldn’t seem to put the puck past
[1]
the Ducks netminder. The Jr.
Ducks will be participating in the
Presidents’ Day Challenge at
Pickwick, so the Squirt A squad will
have another shot at them.
The PeeWee A team also
participated in the Arizona Hockey
Clubs Thanksgiving Shootout. The
PeeWee squad played in the Elite
division and were pitted against AA
and AAA teams. Playing up a
division proved a mighty challenge,
as the ’02 PeeWee team took on
several ’01 tier teams from around
the Southwest. The Bears
performed well, keeping every
game competitive and highlighting
their tournament appearance with a
7-0 blanking of the Jr. Coyotes.
With the Holiday Tournament
season behind them, Bears teams
are now gearing up to make a run
at the S.C.A.H.A. playoffs.
BASE HOCKEY EVALUATES BEARS
Base Hockey uses high speed
photography and Pro instruction to define a
player’s individual performance needs in a
stick design.
With the S.C.A.H.A. season on hiatus for
the holidays, BASE visited the Bears. The first
twenty players to sign up received a forty-five
minute one-on-one shooting evaluation. Each
participant was given a DVD of his shot along
with an evaluation. Most players ordered
custom sticks from BASE, to be built
specifically to suit their ability and strength.
The response from parents and players was
so positive, that talks are underway to bring
BASE back to Pickwick for on-ice clinics
during spring hockey.
Kings Visit Pickwick
Pickwick Ice and dozens of California Golden Bears players
welcomed stars of the Los Angeles Kings to Burbank. Jonathan
Quick, Slava Voynov and Daniel Carcillo were joined by ex-King,
and radio commentator, Daryl Evans. Fans started lining up outside
the rink at 4am in anticipation of the 2pm visit, but Bears players
were given VIP treatment and moved to the front of the line. After
an extended autograph signing session, the Kings took to the ice for
a one hour clinic with Bears players of all ages. It was an incredible
opportunity for our young skaters to get on the ice with their heroes.
Thank you to the Los Angeles Kings and to Pickwick Ice Center for
including the California Golden Bears in this amazing experience!
BEARS ACQUIRE ADM BOARDS
The Bears have purchased a cross-ice board
system for the ADM program. This is a huge
upgrade from the foam bumpers previously used
for cluster tournaments and will provide our
youngest players with a more fluid game.
The system takes approximately ten minutes
to set up and break down -- depending on the
number of parent volunteers -- and will be used
when the Bears host ADM tournaments. They
may also be used for clinics and three-on-three
leagues and tournaments.
Credit goes to Bears President, Todd
Thomasy, who partnered with the Channel Island
Riptide Organization to find the highest quality

BEARS ANNUAL
HOLIDAY PARTY
The Bears
Holiday Party and
Fundraiser was, once
again, a huge
success. Families
skated, ate delicious baked goods and bought raffle
tickets in the hopes of winning various prizes which included:
tickets to Disneyland, a signed Kopitar jersey, camping tents and
sleeping bags and a brand new iPad Mini.
Kudos to Michelle Thomasy for planning such a great event and
thank you to Elaine Godby for overseeing the bake sale. Also, thank
you to Amy Wong for organizing the merchandise table.

DAVE HOLIDAY JOINS THE BEARS
With unamimous board approval,
Director of Hockey Peter Torsson has
hired Dave Holiday to join the Bears
coaching staff.
Dave is a veteran youth hockey
coach who has specialized in developing
younger players for years. He has
coached numerous teams including the
Squirt A Columbus Capitals and
Pasadena Maple Leafs. He also lead the
Valley Ice Center Monarchs Squirt AA
team to a tournament championship.
Dave will jump right in alongside
Dominique Beaudoin to help coach the
youngest Bears players in the ever
expanding ADM program. Along with
Mites he will also have an expanding role
with Squirt teams as the club continues
to grow.
The addition of Dave Holiday is
another example of the Bears
committment to providing our players
with the best possible instruction.
Please join us in welcoming Dave into
the Bears family.
Bears Squirt B goalie, Sky
Willer, is Co-Champion of the
Anaheim Ducks 1 on 1 Challenge.
In preliminary rounds Sky
competed against goalies from all
over Southern California, before
advancing to the finals.
The final round was held
during the first intermission of the
Canucks - Ducks NHL game at
the Honda Center in
Anaheim. Bears
proud goalie coach
Roman Nashenko
watched his pupil
from the stands as
Sky competed in
front of 17,000
boisterous fans.
Sky was able to
control his nerves
and frustrate
shooters, once again
performing brilliantly
between the pipes. After seven
rounds without a clear winner,
tournament directors called the
finals a draw and Sky was named
Co-Champion.
Contratulations to Sky Willer
for his accomplishment as well as
goalie coach Roman Nashenko
for continuing to develop
outstanding goalies for the
California Golden Bears!
