Overview - Queensland basic physician training pathway

Overview
Queensland basic physician training pathway
The Queensland basic physician training
pathway (the pathway) is a statewide
approach to basic physician training
placements. The pathway involves central
oversight of selection, with a local network
model
of
hospital
placement
and
appointment. The pathway emphasises
statewide consistency and quality, in
association with trainee equity, flexibility
and choice.
The pathway was implemented in 2011 to improve the
capacity and quality of physician training in Queensland.
and is supported by the medical education and training
team within the Office of the Principal Medical Officer
(OPMO). The pathway comprises four hospital-based
Rotations.
1.
2.
3.
4.
Far North Rotation
Northside Rotation
Southside Rotation
Coastal Rotation
Each rotation includes a defined cluster of metropolitan
and regional Royal Australasian College of Physicians
(RACP) accredited training hospitals, through which
trainees will rotate for the course of their basic training.
The pathway formally commenced recruitment, selection
and allocation for applicants seeking appointment
commencing February 2012.
Recruitment
Applications open 11 June and close 9 July 2014.
Pathway applications must be submitted using the
Queensland Health RMO Campaign online application.
Visit the pathway website for further details
www.health.qld.gov.au/rmo/qbpt.asp
Selection and appointment
The selection process is overseen by the OPMO in
conjunction with the Rotation Education Committees
(RECs). Suitable trainees for entry onto the pathway will
be offered places according to ranking, available
positions and trainee preference.
Successful applicants will be offered a two year basic
training pathway place within one of the rotations
(dependent on individual training requirements). This will
cover the remaining expected duration of their basic
physician training (figure one). Appointments will consist
of-up to-two, 12 month hospital employment contracts.
The hospital(s) to which you are first allocated each year
will issue a letter of appointment and employment
contract. Continuation on the pathway will be subject to a
satisfactory annual performance review conducted by
your DPE and Pathway Rotation Coordinator.
Applicants who are ineligible for a pathway position (such
as those who have not yet registered with the RACP), will
be able to apply for non-pathway positions e.g. Principal
House Officer in Medicine or Senior House Officer within
Queensland Health via the RMO Campaign application.
Eligibility criteria
To be considered eligible for a pathway position,
applicants must;
1 Hold current general (unconditional) registration with
the Medical Board of Australia.
2 Be registered with the RACP (including prospective
approval of training rotations (44 weeks) by a Director of
Physician Education (DPE)
3 Be able to commence at least basic training year two at
the commencement of the 2015 training year.
The College registration deadline is 28 February 2014.
Additional information on the College registration process
is available at
www.racp.edu.au/registration/introduction/start/
Allocation within rotations
Trainees on the pathway will undertake a series of
independent hospital placements. These are allocated
equitably on the basis of trainee preference, RACP
training requirements and workforce need.
The allocation of trainees to pathway hospitals will be
undertaken within the four hospital-based rotations (figure
two).
RECs will coordinate the allocation of trainees to
accredited hospitals and terms within each rotation. The
RECs will also be responsible for monitoring the progress
of trainees on the pathway.
Education
The pathway aims to enhance educational experiences
for trainees outside established tertiary training contexts
through distributed learning and coordinated educational
events, such as the 2014 Clinical Examination
Preparation Program.
