Random Thoughts
Tony Franklin, Publisher
Oh the season of March
Madness is finally upon us.
That special time of year where
people who know nothing
about college basketball
suddenly become experts. I’m
one of those. But this year I
can actually name two college
basketball players; most years I
can’t name a single player.
It used to be different, I
used to watch tons of games,
and knew the players, but
since the great players only
play in the NCAA for one year
and then move to the NBA, my
interest has waned.
But come tournament season, I’m all-in! This is my 6th
consecutive of heading to Las
Vegas for the opening rounds
of the tournament. My friend
and I have a rule that we bet
on every single college game
during our stay, that’s not a
recipe for success mind you,
but man is it fun. Surprisingly
we are riding a hot wave of five
consecutive years of basically
breaking even. Now sometimes
we do have to get a little
creative going into the last few
games in order to get back to
even, but it’s been working out.
Being in Vegas for March
Madness is the single greatest
gambling experience there
is. So much action, so much
noise, so many people, the only
downside is that it’s all dudes
out there. With that being
said the last two years we’ve
ran into, I think, the only
girl in town, Jackie A., in the
most random of places. I have
intentionally not asked her
if she will be there this year
just to see if we can make it a
turkey. The funny part is that
she doesn’t go out there for the
tournament, she just happens
to be there, crazy!
Now for my Final Four picks
and these are in no particular
order. This is for informational
purposes only, no gambling
please.

We spent last Saturday
hanging out with Last Call
Leisha. It had been quite a
while since I have seen or even
talked to her so it was nice to
catch and see what she going
on. We spent the day walking
around the McKinney Square
which is always good times
and finished up at the little
winery in town.

The AWBA is coming back to the the Dallas/Fort

2014 Bowler’s Ed
Grant Recipients
As part of The Bowling
Foundation’s continuing effort
to help enhance the lives of
others through the sport of
bowling, the foundation has
awarded six grants in the form
of mobile bowling equipment
to schools and organizations
across the country. The Mobile
Bowling Equipment program
annually helps schools, parks
and recreation departments,
youth groups, disabled and
disadvantage service groups
and other organizations teach
students the lifelong sport of
bowling though education,
instruction, fitness and fun.
Students who may be unable
to compete on another playing
field can find athletic success
in bowling. Not only can the
Bowler’s Ed program impact
children in a physical education class, but it also brings a
unique activity to school-wide
and community events.
The grants are awarded
in the form of bowling kits
(value $1,200 each) which
includes six carpeted bowling
lanes, rubberized balls and
pins and instructional DVDs to
assist coaches and teachers in
introducing and instructing the
game.
Schools receiving the grant
in 2014 are:
• West Ridge Middle School,
West Monroe, La.
• Bryant Woods Elementary,
Columbia, Md.
• St. Mary’s Academy, New
Orleans
• Mamou Elementary, Mamou,
La.
• Shalimar Elementary,
Shalimar, Fla.
• Academy of the Sacred Heart,
New Orleans
“It is an honor and a
privilege to award the Bowling
Foundation grants to these
schools and organizations,”
said Nancy Schenk, president of
The Bowling Foundation. “We
know that in this economy so
many schools are having their
budgets cut, and these grants
help us provide some small
financial relief to help maintain
and improve the resources they
need to continue to enrich the
lives of our children.”
Schenk said it is always a
joy to award these grants to
students and schools in need.
“Bowling is an American pastime and one of the few sports
you can do your entire lifetime.
It’s our honor to help out those
who teach our children to be
active and healthy for today
and tomorrow.”
Public or private educational
institutions, grades K-8; or
501(c) 3 non-profit organizations serving youth in grades
K-8 are eligible to receive the
annual grants. An organization
is eligible to receive funding
once every three years. Individuals are not eligible to apply
or receive awards.

program go to BowlingFoundation.com.

Thursday, March 20, to benefit
The Jerome Bettis Bus Stops

in the event along with celebrity guests including former
Steelers Chuck Sanders, Craig

among others. General admission tickets are available for
$50. Tickets to bowl with

The goal of the event is to
acknowledge the philanthropic
work The Jerome Bettis Bus
Stops Here Foundation is doing
and to raise money for underprivileged inner-city youth. The
Foundation works to improve
the overall quality of life for
troubled and less fortunate
adolescents by offering programs to help them distinguish
between healthy and unhealthy
life choices. Proceeds from the
event will benefit programs
for Pittsburgh youth which
include computer-engineering
programs, asthma awareness
and mentorship programs.
“The bowling event is something new we’re adding to the
other things we’ve been doing
for the Foundation,” Bettis said.
“Bowling is my first love after
football, so I’m really excited
about this event. We’re doing
bowling because we get people

WEEKLY GLANCE
(For Feb. 28 - March 11, 2014)
Illinois bowler rolls first
perfect game at 2014 USBC
Open Championships
Terrence Blevins of Chicago
rolled the first perfect game of
the 2014 United States Bowling
Congress Open Championships
on March 8 and catapulted into
the lead in Regular Singles.
The 44-year-old right-hander
put together 18 consecutive
strikes on the way to games
of 257 and 300 at the National
Bowling Stadium in Reno, Nev.,
but he came up short in his bid
for the event’s first 800 series,
finishing with 226 for a 783
set.
He added 633 in doubles and
585 in team for a career-best
all-events total of 2,001, which
now is second overall.
In the games leading up
to the 300, Blevins struggled
with getting his arm swing
where he wanted and fought
through the lane transition in
the middle of doubles. He made
the necessary adjustments
and got comfortable, but then
came the nerves associated
with perfection on the sport’s
biggest stage.
“I’ll be honest, I did get a
little bit nervous,” said Blevins,
who made his 16th USBC Open
Championships appearance. “A
300 here is a little bit different
than 300 in league play, so
I just wanted to make sure I
didn’t get too nervous. After
about the ninth one, I told
myself ‘OK, this is what we
came to do. Let’s try to make
good shots and finish it up.’”
Former PBA standout leads
Regular All-Events
Former Professional Bowlers
Association standout Curtis
Odom of Coldwater, Mich.,
moved into the top spot in
Regular All-Events at the USBC
Open Championships on March
9.
The 55-year-old right-hander
put up sets of 741 in singles,
707 in team and 628 in doubles
for an all-events tally of 2,076,
surpassing the 2,001 total
posted by Terrence Blevins of
Chicago a day earlier. Odom’s
singles effort was enough to
move him into second place
behind Blevins.
Odom’s past success at the
National Bowling Stadium
includes rolling the first perfect
game of the 2011 tournament.
The 2014 event marked his
23rd Open Championships
appearance.
The doubles bar was raised
earlier March 9 as Darris
Wiltse, a 47-year-old left-hander
from Las Vegas, and Jason Aikens, a 38-year-old right-hander
from West Branch, Mich.,
combined for a 1,316 total.
Wiltse contributed a 655 series,
while Aikens added 661. Scott
Hartnell of Kenosha, Wis., and
Derek Hartnell of Rolla, Mo.,
previously held the Regular

JUST PAYING ATTENTION
Continued from Page 12
scheduled time after the game.
What was to follow became
one of TV bowling’s biggest,
then seemingly forgotten urban
legends.
The premise was pretty
simple. Three bowlers appeared
on each show. Sponsored by
Phillies cigars and Brunswick,
two would roll nine frames,
the one with the most strikes
would take on the previous
week’s winner in the title
match. If a bowler threw six
consecutive strikes, he would
win a jackpot of $5,000. A
six-bagger in the final match
would win the bigger jackpot.
On this particular show, it
was a record $75,000. That is
$600,000 in 2014 dollars.
The jackpot started at
$25,000 and would go up
$5,000 each week until hit.
That’s when Therm Gibson
threw the nearly-forgotten
string of strikes.
Although it was recorded
in kinescope form, as many
shows were then due to the
cost of videotape, it is quite the
interesting picture of network
television in the early 1960s.
After the famed 1975 PBA
King Louie Open, featuring
Mark Roth’s first title and first
of two TV 299
games, this show
was next on the
list of lost classics.
Now you can find
it here:

right where they left off from
last year.
The camera angles and
innovative three-shot layout
is back. The left half showed
the bowlers, the upper right
showed the pins, the lower
right showed the ball-by-ball
scoresheet as seen by the players and spectators.
Having been behind the mic
for a number of live-streams
and even with professional
broadcasting experience, the
toughest thing for announcers
to do was pace the flow of
information. When a webcast
runs three to five hours, there
is only so much fresh information to talk about. Not all of
the 300 to 500 viewers will be
attentive viewers for an entire
webcast.
For the USBC Open and
Women’s versions, Cannizzaro
has figured out how often to
repeat team standings, future
live-streams, general tournament information, leaderboard
summary, and of course,
comments and questions from
Facebook and the chat room
immediately next to the Bowl
TV video feed on YouTube. If
one is able to tune in for an
entire live-stream, there is
enough time between the major
pieces of information as not to
make them repeated too often.
One thing missing from the
opening cast was a third voice
in the booth, providing lane
play and equipment analysis.
Last year, much of this was
handled by Showcase Lanes
coach Matt Mcniel, including
him going down near the
bowler’s area providing immediate answers to chat room
and announcer questions.
A new addition this year
will be more bowling background information on each
of the bowlers featured. On
network telecasts, there are
production assistants to take
care of this, but Cannizzaro
and Smith will get the information ahead of time.
The next live-stream is
Saturday March 22 at 9 p.m.
Central Daylight Time.

Just Paying
Attention
By Mark London

He heard about the
video and wanted to see it, so
I offered the computer for the
90-second clip. After viewing
it, part of him was still miffed
about losing the title. Even in
his eighties, the competitive
fires still burn for USBC Hall of
Famer Don Ellis.
“I can’t say I was real happy
watching that video. Only one
shot was of me throwing a ball
and I didn’t see it hit the pins,”
Ellis said.
He had just seen a USBC
Retro Roll clip of fellow
Houstonian Billy Welu, who
was the last bowler to success-
fully defend his USBC (then
ABC )Masters title, before
Jason Belmonte did it a couple
of weeks ago.
Ellis did say he was not
rolling a lot of high scores
in the tournament, but was
scoring just well enough to win
matches. It was something he
learned growing up in Houston
in the bowling scene at the
time.
“That’s how I learned to
bowl under pressure. You
bowled to win a match, not to
post a high score,” Ellis said.
There was one more nugget
I hadn’t heard before. Welu

I’m not quite sure how this
