Published on 23 November 2009 the report of the independent NHS Health & Well-being Review is
often simultaneously referred to as ‘The Invisible Patients report’ with an understanding that staff are
those invisible patients. The report reiterated the business case for change in NHS culture stating that
10 million days are lost every year due to staff sick leave equivalent to 4.5% of the entire workforce
and at a direct cost of £1.7 billion every year. The recommendation was to provide health and wellbeing initiatives for staff across the NHS. Supported by these findings, this seminar will open
discussion on supporting change in the culture of healthcare and how mindfulness and core values
training can support the changes recommended.

Increasing evidence demonstrates that mindfulness can reduce stress, improve coping ability,
optimize learning, positively change the structure of the brain and enhance prosocial states of mind.
We could be forgiven for assuming that mindfulness could be the solution to all our problems
especially when we need to find a quick and economic solution. However, actually knowing what
mindfulness can do is not enough to implement it safely into practice. This seminar will open
discussion on the appropriate practice and development of mindfulness and, in particular, identify
situations when not only is it unhelpful but it could cause harm.

Compassionate Presence as the Heart of Mindfulness in Healthcare
Quaker Meeting House, Liverpool
Saturday 22/11/2014
10am – 4pm
It is an everyday experience in the field of Healthcare to be exposed to strong emotional states such as anger,
blame and grief. The ability to be present in a stressful environment with compassionate care and
understanding is a constant challenge and often results in suppressing emotions and subjugation of personal
needs. This day will offer an opportunity to explore how mindfulness and compassion practice can be a
practice for self as well as others in the presence of difficulty. In the light of The Public Inquiry Francis Report
(2013), we will explore ways in which mindfulness and compassion practice could be introduced and adapted
contextually into the working culture of Healthcare to benefit our common humanity.
Level 3:- Residential or non - residential 5 days mindfulness and compassion skills training
This will be held at - Sandymount Retreat Centre, 16 Burbo Bank Rd, Liverpool, Merseyside L23 6TH
Arriving after 3pm Friday 20th March 2015 and ending after lunch Tuesday 24th March 2015
Cost:- £350
There can really be no level of attainment, qualification or goal to be reached which is greater than a
deepening of our own humanity. A residential setting can support the creation of a safe container for deep
listening and experiential learning through reflective practice interwoven with formal and informal practices of
mindfulness and compassion. It can offer an experiential introduction to a culture that naturally supports the
personal development, wellbeing and resiliency of caregivers as they serve others and learn to deal more
skilfully with difficult communications and conflict. It is a unique training which is dedicated to building
awareness, compassion and confidence in the community. These 5 days offer an opportunity to practice and
embed mindfulness and compassion skills relevant to healthcare into daily living.
Training will include daily practices that encourage exploration into:1.) Conceptualizations of mindfulness and compassion within healthcare
2.) The role of intentions for practice
3.) Mindful communication skills
4.) T h e place of reflective practice and council in the workplace
5.) Interpersonal compassionate communication practice
6.) The role of movement in practice
7.) Exploration of appropriate application of skills within the context of the workplace

The encouragement of attitudes of openness and inclusiveness are essential as a basis for the development of
mindfulness and compassion in healthcare and in communities. Through the cultivation of awareness,
acceptance and presence we learn over time to relate with others and with experience without manipulation
or without resorting to old unhelpful reference points or patterns. This day of reflective practice will facilitate
discussion on the practice and development of mindfulness and compassion in healthcare. It will focus on the
development of supportive practice communities in the service of promoting a cultural shift through
mindfulness and compassion in healthcare settings.
