New ‘Official’ Web Site for 2016 ‘Multi-Disciplinary’
Heard Island operation - Ham Radio to provide On and
Off-Island Communications
The Heard Island DXpedition, originally scheduled for the fall this year - then later moved to 2015
- has now become as part of a multi-disciplinary
scientific operation called "The Heard Island Project: Discovering Life in the Extremes" and
rescheduled for January 2016. The overall Heard
Island Project site is now http://
www.heardisland.org/
As part of this reorganization the radio DXpedition has been renamed the “2016 Heard Island
VK0EK DXpedition” with a new web page http://vk0ek.org/., The ham radio responsibility includes providing both on and off-island communications for the expedition. This will be in addition to
responding to huge pileups from Hams around the world trying to contact number 5 most-wanted DXCC entity.
Transportation to Heard, an extremely remote Australian subAntarctic island in the southern Indian Ocean will be aboard the S.
A. Agulhas. Departure will be from Cape Town, South Africa in late
December, 2015, for the 12-day cruise directly to Heard Island. It is
expected that the entire stay at the island will be during January
2016, with return to Cape Town in February. If the Agulhas name
sounds familiar, the vessel formerly serviced the South African National Antarctic Program (SANAP) research bases: Gough Island
(ZD9), Marion Island (ZS8), and SANAE
IV in Antarctica.
The DXpedition plans to set up
two sites on the island:
1) They will set up stations at
the original 1997 VK0IR DXpedition site Atlas Cove.
2) The second site Sealers
Beach / Doppler Hill which is located at Spit Bay on the island’s eastern side..
The Web page states, "We expect worldwide demand for as many as 150,000 contacts, with as
many as 50,000 different stations. In order to satisfy this demand, we will operate four stations for a
period of nearly three weeks, with a team of 20 radio operators. We are developing a 'fast deploy'
strategy so that we can be on the air in one day, and break down in one day maximize the time on
the air. This will be a 'full service' operation (all-bands, all modes), with the four stations running
continuously. We plan to dedicate one station to making only 'All-time-new-ones' (ATNOs), giving
radio operators their first contact ever with Heard Island. We will also make special efforts to log
contacts with all license class operators, who have more limited band privileges."

President’s Message
Hello Fellow NFDXA members. Another month behind us and summer
weather is in full bloom. It is again time to start ensuring we disconnect,
ground or do whatever it is that one does to protect their equipment from
the upcoming lightning storms. The DX opportunities this month are not as
fruitful as the previous few moths but there are still some countries to be had.
I see that at least a couple of our members are putting up some big numbers in
the club contest. Jim NU4Y is currently at 293 with Dick WR4K close behind
with 290.
Jim announced at the last club meeting that he will be visiting China this
month so that should provide some of us lagging behind a good opportunity to
catch up.
Mike W1FO
This month also brings us the Dayton Hamfest. I know Larry K3LB and Dr.
Jay AA4FL are attending and Dr. Jay will once again be doing a presentation on the T33A Dxpedition.
Good luck Jay, I am sure Larry will be cheering you on from the front row. Take lots of pictures of any
new DX products on the market and of any other friends or club members who may attend.
On a final note, I will be off for summer break starting on May 9th. So, if you need some amplifier
work done, please let me know. Remember, it is always good engineering practice to go thru your amplifier a couple times a year and at least blow the cob webs out of them. Even if they have just been sitting around not being used, they always benefit from a good cleaning. Many an amplifier has met there
doom from clogged cooling fins. Especially those pesky, expensive ceramic tubes many of us use.
Well guys see everyone at the meeting, good DX.

A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO ZS8
Chapter 2
Have

By now I've
learned you don't just call up a concrete guy, and he comes out and digs a hole and fills it
with concrete.

About Upgrading Your
License
Class?
In my idle time between dialing contractors, I've
been raasslin' with the problem of getting the tower vertical once it's mated to the base. Winches could be a hobby
all by themselves. Winch vs. hoist. Manual vs. electric.
Brake vs. worm-gear. Cable capacity and size. So in the
interest of efficiency and getting the real hard facts, I posted some questions to the Tower-talk reflector. Out of the
approximately 75 responses, I tallied over 78,654 different
opinions. Welllll.....you know.
The 4 element SteppIR is BIG on the ground,
Mike NF4L
One of the important lessons learned was how to calculate the load on the
winch. If only I'd paid attention in physics class.... Turns out the load when the tower is
horizontal is a bit over 4000 lbs. The tower with rotor and antennas weighs in at about
1200 lbs.
I decided on a manual worm-gear winch, driven by a motor. The consensus on
the reflector for a motor was a Milwaukee Hole-Hawg or Super-Hawg drill. Anything less tended to go up in flames. A problem with that
approach is that the drill is a two speed setup (~450 and ~1750 RPM), not continuously variable. That speed tended to heat the worm-gear
and shaft bushings to the point of smoking. Estimated duty cycle was 20 seconds on, 2 minutes off.
My friend Rob K6DQ had been following the thread and called me to suggest I use his setup, a manual winch driven by a wheelchair motor. The wheelchair motors are variable speed, high torque and designed to run for long periods of time.
He put me in touch with a guy in his town, Domingo the Wheel Chair Wizard. Domingo and I discussed the programming for the
controller. There are close to 100 different parameters, and some needed to be changed for this application. For instance in a wheelchair, if
the throttle is released suddenly, the motor coasts a bit so the rider isn't tossed out on his head. If you've ever
seen BattleBots on TV, think about how they react. We cut a deal and a week later, I had the motor, a controller,
a bag of parts and some paperwork. Rob had an extra 3000
lb. winch at a good price, so that came too. This is beefy
stuff. They are close to 30 lbs. each.
EVENTS
Battery cart and control box on left,
motor and gearbox on right.
A couple of days worth of poring over the wiring
diagrams and getting a box, the switches, a pot and the
external wiring, and batteries (2 12V 35AH) and I had a
working system, except for mating the motor and winch.
I learned I really hate crimping a bunch of the
almost invisible Molex pins the controller used. And it's
almost impossible to stuff 10 AWG wire into an Anderson
Power Pole connector.

Voice of Russia Goes Silent on Shortwave
After months of conflicting reports, the Voice of Russia permanently ended its shortwave
broadcasts at the end of March.
The station - formerly Radio Moscow - was a major propaganda tool of the former Soviet
Union during the Cold War and was usually among the first stations tuned in by new shortwave
listeners, as its powerhouse signals were hard to miss.
As with most other government broadcasters abandoning shortwave, the Voice of Russia
cited budgetary problems as the reason for its decision to terminate shortwave broadcasts.

I happened to tune across 10 Meters and found ZM90DX calling
CQ on SSB with few takers and snagged him for a new band. Then a
few minutes later heard and worked them on 10 CW. Just a lucky
opening I think, especially with my vertical.
Worked the FL QSO party near the end of the month, had a
good time. Band conditions were poor, no contacts on 10 meters at
Jim NU4Y
all. Ran low power and made 507 QSO’s , 506 were on CW, and
over 300 were on 20 meters due to the bands. One exciting experience during operating on 15 meters, was noticing a huge signal about 5 KHZ above my CQ frequency.
This was one heck of a signal, my Spectrum Scope is in 10 db divisions and it was up to the top at 60 db
and very, very bright. I had to close my eyes to get my vision back. I actually walked out the radio
room to see which one of my buddies was in the driveway playing with me. The giant 50 KW WOKV
only 3 to 4 miles away is only 70 db.
Turns out it was K5YAA/M CLA running stations. He must have been traveling down St Rd 21,
(Blanding Blvd.) right even with me. WOW was he loud. Turns out Jerry K5YAA has one heck of a
mobile setup. You really need to go to QRZ.com and see the KW mobile. As a note, I also worked
Jerry the next weekend, and he was in WY for the 7th district QSO party. Talk about getting around.
EVENTS
I have had some more thoughts
about pileup management. Seems that the QSO rate, on Phone, is
lower when operating split. People keep calling and calling. When operating simplex, they must stop to
hear. (At least some want to hear.) Of course, great ops manage the pileup well, and others,
well……
By the time you read this I might be atop the Great Wall, what an experience this is going to be.
More to follow.
Stay thirsty my friends.

planned for April, 2015 - next year.
The gear used in the operation will be left on the
island for the purpose of setting up a permanent ham radio station there.
The Spratly Islands are a disputed group of more than 750 reefs, islets, atolls, cays,
and islands located in the South China Sea. According to Wikipedia the Spratlys and
numerous other islands in the region, including the #7 most-wanted DXCC entity Scarborough, BS7, have been growing sources of tension in the region. China is extending its
power throughout Asia and enforcing its claims to sovereignty.
In addition to China, all or portions of the Spratly Island group are being claimed by
Taiwan, Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei and the Philippines. The underlying reason for the
ongoing territorial dispute is the belief that there may be large deposits of oil and natural
gas In this particular area of the South China Sea.
Ukraine-Russian Political Intrigue Plays Out on Ham Bands
The political dispute between Russia and Ukraine is impacting the HF amateur bands,

antennas they have hexbeams, a 6element 6M Yagi, and verticals for 30, 40 and 80 at the edge of the sea. They are considering the cost/benefit of 160. See foldingantennas.com for more on the antennas they are taking along. They will have a Club Log online log and OQRS. The logs will go on LoTW
within three months. ZL3PAH will be the QSL manager. Updated info from ZL3GA says 160 is definitely being planned. On 6m there will
be a breakable beacon with a K3/KPA500 ready to switch to 6 if the band opens. 160M antenna options will likely be tried out from ZL3X

3B8 – MAURITIUS (CQZ 39) By the time you read this, Robert, M0RCX,
should be active as 3B8/M0RCX from Mauritius until May 28. He announced several weeks ago that his trip to Mauritius is more as a tourist with his family and not
seen as a DXpedition. His power will be limited to 100 watts, and he hopes to have
a hexbeam, a wire beam for 6m (possibly made from the island's bamboo), as well
as a delta loop and long wire available for his activity. His operating position will be
close to the city center of Port Louis in the North West of the Island. He does
plan/hopes to operate at least 3 hours a day on the following HF Phone bands:
40/20/17/15/12/10 meters. He is also planning to operate on some PSK and JT65
making some contacts with low to modest power levels (NO amp). Robert has
been asked about moonbounce over the horizon but thinks this may be optimistic
with only 100 watts. He will set up a schedule on QRZ.com under 3B8M0RCX. He
has already posted suggested frequencies on his FaceBook page . Robert says, "I
plan to live over there in about four years so hopefully I'll get a feel for it. QTH is
inland about a mile from the ocean but there is a mountain behind me (east) this is

W1AW Centennial Operations Shifted States May 7 (UTC)
The ARRL Centennial W1AW WAS operations taking place
throughout 2014 from each of the 50 states will relocate at 0000
UTC on Wednesday, May 7 (the evening of May 6 in US time
zones), from Connecticut and Nevada to Nebraska (W1AW/0).
Nebraska is the first state to repeat as a W1AW Centennial host.
There will be just one state this week; Utah, which had initially
been scheduled to repeat this week, will instead host W1AW
starting July 2. Some additional schedule changes have been made,
and the schedule has been updated to reflect these.
During 2014 W1AW will be on the air from every state (at
least twice) and most US territories, and it will be easy to work all states solely by contacting W1AW portable operations.
“One of the advantages of contests being disorderly is that one is constantly making exciting discoveries.”

VK0EK Heard Island Operators — from page 1
Operators currently listed are Bob/KK6EK (Leader), Rich/KY6R
(Co-Organizer), Willy/HB9AHL, Adam/N2ARB, Bill/N2WB, Alan/
VK6CQ, Les/W2LK, David/WD5COV and Jackie/ZL3CW. The
Web page is still under construction, but has plenty of info and pictures to look at.
There’s room for more ops on the Heard Island 2016 DXpedition. According to the web site: “Currently we have room for additional team members, and we welcome inquiries from potential participants. We estimate that the
participant cost will be roughly $15k, all-inclusive (Cape Town→HI→Cape Town). We have established local teams in the San Francisco Bay Area and in South Africa to help plan and coordinate the expedition. We would welcome help with any aspect of this project.”

Operating in Brazil During FIFA World Cup
Amateur Radio operators visiting Brazil for the 2014 FIFA
World Cup (soccer world cup) in June and July of this year will
be able to operate in PY "regardless of having reciprocity agreement between Brazil and his/her country or regardless if he/she
has an IARP license" says PY2XB, Fred. Amateur Radio operators who wish to operate need to send a copy of the identification page(s) of your passport, a copy of your Amateur Radio
license along with a list of cities you plan to operate from, as
well as dates by sending details to LABRE (Brazilian National
Radio Club) at [email protected]. — DDX

The DXDinner will be on Friday, May 16th, 2014, at the Dayton Marriott,
1414 S. Patterson Blvd., Dayton, OH 45409. There will be a cash bar starting at

ARRL Calls for Quicker, More Visible FCC Enforcement
The ARRL has called for more timely and visible enforcement of the FCC's rules, especially regarding the
amateur service. According to the ARRL Letter, changes in FCC procedures over the past five years restricting
the public release of information about enforcement actions has resulted in "a widespread, albeit inaccurate,
public perception that there is no active enforcement in our service." That perception, said the League, has
resulted in "unacceptable increases in rule violations" because people think they won't be held accountable

The Last Word
A point of personal privilege, if I may.
Every now and then one has to step away from whatever
he’s doing and take a ‘break’—even from something he loves
like chasing DX or listening to chatter about a DXpedition
that’s underway or in the planning stages.
So, I’m going to do just that. Get outta Dodge and recharge the old batteries. Just the wife and myself, along with
some stuff to read that has nothing to do with work or Ham
Radio—which will be a first!
We’ll load up the Highlander with stuff to wear and a
Warren NW4C
road map or two, a bunch of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and just drive along wandering back roads that will take us in a general
northerly direction.
We’ll visit a number of state parks and maybe even walk a mile or two on the
lower part of the Appalachian Trail—just to say we did it! We did little over a
mile on the trail’s northern end many moons ago. The rest of the trail that lies
between its beginning and end will have to wait for my next life. : )
I fully expect while I’m gone that one or more of the entities I need will show
up with monster signals. And I when return I hope I’ll be able to really mean it
when I say “Aw gee, that’s too bad. Glad you got him. I’ll get him the next time.”
May the good DX be yours. — NW4C
